to wear a onesie on a long haul flight?

I'm frightened of flying and taking my first ever long haul flight on Saturday! 17hrs straight to Perth. I am packing everything I can think of to make my journey comfortable but am wondering if IABU to wear a onesie on the plane? I have scoliosis so I wriggle into weird positions a lot which makes jeans feel uncomfortable sitting for long periods...yet I find in leggings I get incredibly cold on planes. My late mum bought me a super soft spotty onesie...WIBU to wear it over leggings and a singlet once we board or will I look insane?!

I just sit the sleeves on my lap. No need to have them dragging about the place if you're a seasoned onesie wearer. Amateurs won't understand Grin

Luckingfovely · 04/12/2019 22:49

If you don't want to take any advice and won't consider anything else apart from the onesie, you are just wasting everyone's time. Clearly the flight isn't news, you should have sorted it out earlier. So just wear the damn onesie and look like a idiotic teletubbie and get covered in piss.

morriseysquif · 04/12/2019 22:50

I mean, roll it down and tuck!

Alaimo · 04/12/2019 22:50

I don't own a onesie but wore pyjama trousers on the last long haul flight I took. On the way out I wore jeans and changed into my pyjama in the airplane toilet. On the way back I changed in the airport toilet before getting on the flight. At that point I'd stopped caring what people may think!

Jesus feck. I know AIBU has a reputation for being harsh but FFS. Am excited about my holiday and just having some chat.

Also caring what some random I'll never see again thinks of me comes very far down my list of considerations when contemplating a 17-hour flight. Comfort is paramount, and if you're comfy in a onesie and want to wear it then who the fuck cares what anyone else thinks? Just wear it, be happy and snug and enjoy your trip. I'm sure you'll manage not to get it drenched in piss because presumably you have eyes and working arms.

Echoing @DowntownAbby - some long haul flights are like sitting in a freezer for 13 hours, others are uncomfortably warm. A blanket would be much better than a onesie so you can regulate temperature better. And agree with all the posters saying a onesie would be awful for trips to the toilet, especially as the flight goes on and there will be wee all over the floor in the (very tiny and cramped) toilet.
The blanket you are given on the plane isn’t really big enough I don’t think so take one of your own. A big fleecy one would be ideal.

This^ clearly OP you aren't open to other options and have made your mind up so why bother asking? A onesie on a flight is ridiculous for all reasons already outlined here and I don't believe you don't own any other lounge wear except leggings, not even PJs?? Yeah, just wear the damn onesie, look ridiculous and get covered in pee.

northernknickers · 04/12/2019 22:56

I always change into 'comfies' when flying. These consist of fleecy 'Super Dry' jogging bottoms, gorgeous comfy bed socks, long sleeved thermal t shirt and an oversized fleeced hoodie (also Super Dry!) for snuggling down in. No issues going to the loo and super cosy. Enjoy your trip 👍

Namestranger · 04/12/2019 22:57

Alright I'm checking out now. I started this thread in a fit of packing excitement but clearly am wasting peoples' time.

You posted a thread on AIBU about how your fear of flying and extrema underweight means you have no choice but to wear a spotty, multicoloured onesie on a 17 hour flight. That's not "having some chat"

Omashu · 04/12/2019 22:58

You can always take the onesie off before going to the loo if you’re dressed under it. It’s not that hard!

MzPumpkinPie · 04/12/2019 23:03

Ex flight attendant here.
We've seen everything.
A onsie is not going to offend anybody ( not crew for sure ) might be an issue on one of the Arab airlines though.
I travel in smart jersey loose fitting trousers and a long sleeved jersey top , both are very smart but feel like PJs because they are extra soft fabric.
I wear ballet flats , put socks , a short sleeve top and 2 large silk pashminas, ( one to wrap around my shoulders if I get chilly and one to use as a blanket) silicone ear plugs, an eye mask, neck pillow and a cushion in my hand luggage with some snacks and iPad / Mac book and a kindle paper white , also sound blocking earphones and chargers for everything.
Any essential meds, hand cream, moisturiser & a small make up bag.
After 13 years of transatlantic flights for work and 44 years of transatlantic flights visiting family ( I've lived both in America and the UK) I've perfected my inflight routine.
The crew are always available to help if you feel stressed.
Just remember that the toilet is tiny and you could struggle to get undressed and into a onsie easily

Fr0g · 04/12/2019 23:03

as others have said, the loo is a problem. A onesie might be yor idea of heaven, but probably not when its sticky or soggy with someone elses urine.

Any number of places will have jogging bottoms for less than a tenner - supermarkets, primark, charity shop.
If it's not something you'll wear again, gift to a charity shop when you're back.

AndAnotherNameChanger · 04/12/2019 23:05

Another vote for no due to the toilets.

Pyjama bottoms over your leggings would be a better option - or any other comfortable warm trousers. As others have said at least a few airlines give out pyjamas in first class, so you'll fit right in. Or borrow a pair of joggers from someone - if they're too big you'll look even more like you're a first class passenger.

Sparrow8 · 04/12/2019 23:07

I live in Perth, and those people on your flight that are from Perth won’t think twice about seeing someone in a onesie.

In Perth, it’s common to see people going to the shops in their PJs and slippers if at night; kids at the shops in just their swimming costumes and people bare foot at the shops!

Derbee · 04/12/2019 23:09

Virgin Atlantic give pyjamas, so I think it would be fine. Not in the airport though!

justilou1 · 04/12/2019 23:11

Also, it’s a thousand degrees here in Australia at the moment, and you will be exhausted when you get here. Do you want to be getting out of a fleecy onesie once you get to the airport, or just putting a clean t-shirt on?

DeRigueurMortis · 04/12/2019 23:11

Wear the onesie OP.

I've flown loads with work and seen many people wear them for long haul (including in First Class where you get complimentary PJ's). I tend to get changed into mine as soon as the seatbelt sign goes off and frankly if I can wear them in first/business without anyone batting an eyelid then I don't see why they'd be an issue in any cabin (in fact the only comments I've had are complimentary with people wishing they'd brought theirs).

As for the toilet situation, it's not hard especially not if you have had to master the art of going to the loo in an all in one ski suit when they were fashionable with dirty/pissy floors.

There is a technique to it. Unzip and take your arms out, then hold out the arms and use them to to make a roll of your onesie down your back to just below your knees.

Sit on the loo and tie the "arm roll" round your calves (nothing will touch the floor).

Do your business then simply stand back up fully unroll and zip back in - simple!

Please ignore the judgey people and enjoy your holiday.
Perth is beautiful and it sounds like you are traveling into the Outback too. Please be very very careful out there. We just had a tourist die out there yesterday because their car got bogged in the sand and they went for help and died in the heat.
Also be careful bringing any food into Australia. If you don't finish all the snacks you bring during the flight, discard them before you get to customs. Australia is incredibly strict on food items coming into the country.
Having said all that enjoy your trip :)

notacooldad · 04/12/2019 23:30

Just get track suit bottoms and a fleece

I thought about that by I don't own any joggers and I'll probably never use them again if I got some.

Well you'll wear them on the flight back.
I'd nip into Primark and pick up a cheap outfit of leggings and fleecy jumper

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 04/12/2019 23:35

Except she has said, quite clearly, that she doesn't know where the nearest Primark is and has no money left.

Honeyroar · 04/12/2019 23:35

I’m cabin crew. We get people wearing all sorts, plus you really need to feel comfortable on such a long flight (😱). But sometimes planes can get too hot and it’s hard to regulate the heating so you
Could end up boiling! One thing I recommend for flights is a slanket- a long fleece blanket with sleeves. I use them on flights where we have to sleep on the jump seats by the doors (v cold). May be more use than your onsie.

Knittingnanny · 04/12/2019 23:45

All this changing in and out of outfits, is this why it takes forever to use the toilet on a plane for its real purpose?
