to wear a onesie on a long haul flight?

I'm frightened of flying and taking my first ever long haul flight on Saturday! 17hrs straight to Perth. I am packing everything I can think of to make my journey comfortable but am wondering if IABU to wear a onesie on the plane? I have scoliosis so I wriggle into weird positions a lot which makes jeans feel uncomfortable sitting for long periods...yet I find in leggings I get incredibly cold on planes. My late mum bought me a super soft spotty onesie...WIBU to wear it over leggings and a singlet once we board or will I look insane?!

With family in NZ my DDs are well used to travelling long haul but a few months ago one texted from the transit lounge halfway re her outfit of opaque tights with dungaree shorts and a sweat shirt over ‘ What was I thinking ? , going to the loo was stupid hard’ And she is young and flexible.

No one gives a monkeys what you wear, stylistically - for practicality, wear layers and have at least a T-shirt to change into, to feel fresher at the end and/ or in case of spilt drinks or food ( I swear I saw the contents of a glass of orange sort of hang there in there air once before falling all over me when we took a drop due to turbulence) plus spare knickers. Useful anyway, in case the dreaded checked luggage non appearance on the baggage belt happens.

Lol at the cashmere and pashmina replies.
I'd say no to the onesie 'cos 1. Standards and 2. Toilet issues.
Primark had joggers the other day, less than a tenner. Go for bulky wear-on layers on top and buy some new bottoms.
2 t-shirts, jumper, hoodie. You'll look like a Michelin man, but you'll be a warm one.

Kanga83 · 04/12/2019 22:16

I'm the same- a bit of cold and I hate it. For flying/long car journeys I'm a leggings, vest top and baggy jumper dress, and I take my knitted poncho that doubles up as a blanket.

Rubyupbeat · 04/12/2019 22:18

Unless you are travelling 1st, with a decent size bathroom, I wouldn't chance it, may touch the floor or seat in toilet, plus, really sorry, but onesies are for babies.

BarbaraofSeville · 04/12/2019 22:18

And the special Hush trackie bottoms because despite looking virtually identical to all those from normal shops at a quarter of the price, they're acceptable nice clothes because they're £50 a pair.

Rubyupbeat · 04/12/2019 22:21

@JellyfishAndShells
Laughed at your floating orange juice!
My son travels a lot and last flight suddenly was showered in coffee, some idiot had put a cup with a lid on in the overhead locker...and the inevitable happened, My son wasn't the only one covered in it!

Regarding the cabin temperature, have a look around online (flyertalk or similar) to see what Qantas are like for temperature.

I know it always seems to be completely random what the temperature is, but they actually set it very carefully as per the airline's policy - the odd thing is that the different airlines' polices vary massively!

Absolutely no problem wearing PJs on a flight - you wouldn't be the only one in them.

You sometimes get great PJs for free (admittedly only in business or first). I have some nice sets of White Company ones from Qatar flights and some really lovely silky traditional Chinese looking ones from Hainan Airlines!

As mentioned a few times previously, I wouldn't risk a onesie purely because it will end up in the floor of the toilets soaking 'stuff' up. Xmas Envy

Ladybirdbookworm · 04/12/2019 22:25

I think it's an excellent idea.
If you feel nervous on an aircraft it's nice to be cosy and a onesie can feel very comforting. When I was crew the airline I worked for gave out pyjamas for the first class customers to change into once on board. It's no big deal and you won't be the only one in a onesie I'm sure .
Have a lovely flight Wink

DarkMutterings · 04/12/2019 22:25

Onsie and airplane toilets are the losing point for me

Try and think of this another way / you're travelling about, camping - you may not wear the onsie again and it's pee soaked self will need to be stuff in your suitcases taking up lots of room. Invest a little amount into primark or something like that yoga pants or trackie bottoms and a fleece and you're much more likely to wear them again on the trip and unlikely to be pee soaked so it's not a one time wear, they'd be a many times wear

However if you go for it you won't look ridiculous - no one looks good on long haul, cashmere or otherwise. And even if just for our sanity make sure you're first stop has access to a washing machine !

SouthWestmom · 04/12/2019 22:27

Aw wear the onesie your lovely mum gave you. Would she be proud you managed a long flight?

This is why washing machines were invented, what's the worst that could happen?

ittakes2 · 04/12/2019 22:27

People pee on the floor in planes I would be worried you would struggle to keep your onsie pee free when you are in there. The legs would droop down onto the floor and you would have to hold the top bit away from things.

QueenBlueberries · 04/12/2019 22:30

I can't see how it would be more comfortable than a pair of jogging bottoms or leggings with a long top. Honestly, a onesie, no. Sorry it's a silly idea.

Celebelly · 04/12/2019 22:30

God, for a 17-hour flight wear whatever you feel comfy in. I wouldn't blink at seeing someone in a long haul flight in a onesie. In fact I'd probably just think it was a good idea!

Namestranger · 04/12/2019 22:32

Would she be proud you managed a long flight?

She'd have be completely amazed. I swear I got my dear of flying from DM, bless her!

You'll look ridiculous assuming you are over the age of ten, and it will get filthy and covered in other people's piss in the loos.

You can afford Quantas flights to Australia, a holiday there, a hotel the night before, but can't stretch to a pair of fleece lined leggings at £5 from Primark. Yeah right. Biscuit

JellyfishAndShells · 04/12/2019 22:34

That’s a very good point

YourWinter · 04/12/2019 22:36

Given that you'll certainly need to use the loo during the flight, onesies are the least loo-friendly clothing ever invented and really aren't ideal for anyone who's no longer in nappies.

Hopingtobeamum · 04/12/2019 22:37

For those taking the piss about what people wear, try flying from the UK to UAE, having a 2 hour stop then flying 13 hours to Sydney and going into the office straight from the airport. Then come back and tell me what is ridiculous to wear on a plane.
OP wear what the hell is comfortable and practical for you.
Agree re people pissing on the floor though, not that I've seen it but I always take a pair of flip flops and use airline slippers when walking around. You can never be too careful.

Namestranger · 04/12/2019 22:37

  1. I don't have any time left bcuz work
  2. I have no idea where there is a Primark where I live, miles/many minutes away
  3. I spent all my money in this trip

But thanks for your input, you've been SO helpful.

You WILL be judged. You will also find it near impossible to go to the toilet.

angieloumc · 04/12/2019 22:39

You're obviously going to wear the onesie no matter what anyone says. However firstly it sounds like you'll look like a giant Pudsey Bear in it, secondly you'll be probably too hot and feel bundled up, thirdly what about other people's wee, gross.

which1 · 04/12/2019 22:43

Only ever used the loo on the plane once as only short flights so far.

Everyone saying people- assume the guys - wee all over the floor.

Why is it they don't allocate one loo for ladies and one for gents as you would in a cafe or whatnot.

Abraid2 · 04/12/2019 22:45

Cashmere leggings and hoody.

Namestranger · 04/12/2019 22:47

I was thinking I could just hold it up while peeing as with wearing dungies, and even potentially tie arms together around thighs so no touching the ground. Anyways I'd better go to sleep now, thanks for the helpful advice! Crown Grin

morriseysquif · 04/12/2019 22:49

YANBU, go for it!

Unroll tuck for the loo and wear a vest top underneath, obvs! It is a few mins of discomfort each time for hours of comfort.
