To find these retail practices annoying

  1. Having to pay 10% service charge added to the bill (with no pre mention of the fact) in Yo Sushi - which is expensive enough for what it is anyway. I only noticed when I read it on the receipt afterwards. I always tip waiting staff 10% anyway but I give it in cash to the actual server so I know they get it. If Yo Sushi want to pay their staff higher wages, they can do it themselves.

  2. Lush - I know some people hate it but I don’t. I like their products but I can assure you that I buy FAR LESS when some stranger is standing beside me, disturbing my rare moments of peace and making me smell stuff I’ve no interest in.
    Stop it Lush!

Maple syrup is not an ice cream topping tesco.

Oh god lush sales assistants are annoying. I feel for them though because I've worked in retail where I was forced to conduct myself in this way and people just constantly got angry with me.

Build a Bear is worse. I could commit murder in there.

Am I really the only one who find the perfume in the air to be annoying? I have very, very mild asthma, but nearly got an asthma attack when I was in Matalan two weeks ago. I had to use the blue spray twice. The entire shop stank! It was christmassy smells this time, but the shops have also smelled like perfume on other occasions. I love Ikea, but when we go there I sometimes hand the trolley to another member of my family while I hurry through the department with the scented candles. In Manchester airport I just use the blue spray as soon as I enter the perfume department, that you have to go through to get to departures. I don't know, what people with serious asthma do. Go to hospital instead of on the flight? And don't get me started on the shops and restaurants who have installed a perfume spray that will spray out perfume every 15th minute in the toilet stalls. I don't always have the blue spray on me and for some mysterious reason, I don't really want to be found unconscious with my pants around my ankles.

Lush. One young man demanded "give me your hand" so that he could wash it, in order to demonstrate how to make a lather with the shampoo bar. I felt like a Victorian prude when I replied firmly "no thank you! I don't want to do that!".

I just say no thanks when they ask about an email receipt and they're always fine about it

Herbalteahippie · 07/12/2019 16:33

@rosewils the change thing is a legal requirement it’s to show we’re giving the right change. Sorry I know it’s annoying

Over twenty years ago, when I was much much younger, I worked in lush in a branch in a London station. I lasted about two weeks. Whilst there was a steady flow of customers and you didn't have to entice people to come in, you really did have to speak to each and every one. A greeting was not enough, you were expected to start a conversation. It was ridiculous. Someone would say they had to catch a train and staff were still trying to engage them in an inane conversation about bath bombs.

Weirdly, the other staff seemed not to find this awkward and there were lots of staff for such a tiny shop. I remember there was much talk of how we were a family and all that bollocks. One day I just didn't go in. I couldn't.

Super loud music and getting bothered by staff.

@merchantofvenom
Haha "meaningless chat at the till about my day "
This did drive me nuts. However having not had the best day and having stood at the checkout for ages when the checkout person said "Hi, how are you, have you had a good day?" I said "No"
He then said " Oh dear, why, what happened ?" Before I even realised I'd said " look, you don't actually want to know and I don't want to tell you. So can we just do this".
He said fair enough. If he's there when I go the till now I go to him, he smiles and says "hi". I say "hi". He puts my shopping through, I pack, pay, say thank you and leave.

@notthemum I had the opposite experience! When I used to work in retail on tills, I had (lovely) customers that just overshared.

I’ll never forget when I was 19 a woman came in to return clothes. I asked her why she was returning them (as routine, just to process it on the system). Wasn’t expecting her to say she bought them for her evil daughter who now doesn’t deserve them. Apparently her husband cheated on her with her own sister & they recently moved in together, & her daughter knew the entire time but didn’t tell her?? The poor woman went on for 20 minutes about how her entire life was uprooted & how she has no one leftSad I felt so awful for her, young me didn’t know what to say at all so I just let her vent!

When clothing stores want to sell you clothes but use the most unflattering bright downward light in their fitting rooms. Was in Next today, free WiFi but horrid overhead light. Didn’t buy!

Only been in Lush once. It smells so bad.

I made the mistake of taking my little girl to lush last week for a bath Bomb treat as she had been poorly and sparkly bath water would cheer her up. I went in for one bath bomb and ended up coming out with 5 because the sales woman jumped on us and got my 3 year old very excited by demonstrating bombs in bowls of water. I ended up emailing a complaint because I have extreme anxiety and just going out that day was hard enough never mind telling an over zealous shop assistant to go away. She didn't even ask if we wanted help, just aimed her craziness at my daughter. I couldn't say no to that little excited face Sad
