To find these retail practices annoying

  1. Having to pay 10% service charge added to the bill (with no pre mention of the fact) in Yo Sushi - which is expensive enough for what it is anyway. I only noticed when I read it on the receipt afterwards. I always tip waiting staff 10% anyway but I give it in cash to the actual server so I know they get it. If Yo Sushi want to pay their staff higher wages, they can do it themselves.

  2. Lush - I know some people hate it but I don’t. I like their products but I can assure you that I buy FAR LESS when some stranger is standing beside me, disturbing my rare moments of peace and making me smell stuff I’ve no interest in.
    Stop it Lush!

Morrisons when they only have half the lights on and it reminds me of a store in the former East Germany during the 1980s.
@rhubarbcrumbles, this is Autism friendly hour, where they dim the lights and don't play music .
I don't work for Morrisons, but in our local store it's 10-11am on a Saturday morning.

Sparklingbrook · 04/12/2019 09:38

Same here @SusanneLinder think it’s 9-10 in ours. It seems very popular too.

Ah, now it makes sense. In that case, good idea - as long as the people shopping there don't fall over in the gloom!

Sorry posted to soon, on the flip side I had to chuckle at the above link. I have had all those customers over and over. I have been less annoyed at retail practices and more annoyed at dealing with the above from the other side....

SerenDippitty · 04/12/2019 10:25

I don't know how people have the nerve to try and take something back without being able to prove they bought it in the first place.

I recently took some jeggings back to M&S that I’d bought in the wrong length by mistake. I’d mislaid the receipt but the assistant still let me exchange for the right length even though I couldn’t prove I’d bought them in the first place. I must have an honest face!

everybodyneedsomebody · 04/12/2019 10:26

You don’t need a Matalan card to shop there anymore.

I really hated the hairdresser upsell thing until the past year when I started saying ‘I know you have to do this as part of your job and appreciate the advice but I won’t be buying any products as it’s not in my budget’ straight away. It’s very freeing to basically just say ‘no’ before they get going, especially as they can’t really come back with anything to ‘I’ve budgeted for the haircut and can’t afford anything else’. Works a treat, and they seem pretty relieved to be able to not waste their own time going through everything and awkwardly trying to convince me to spend the cost of the cut again on some shampoo!

Just take the email receipt people, set one up just for e-receipts. I get a rush and I'm not sorry either now when people come in with no paper receipt asking for an exchange or the money to be put on a gift card.

Me 'Ah you've lost your receipt? If you can just show me the e-mail receipt then we can refund you the way you paid"

Customer "I don't have an e-receipt"

Me "Oh dear, sorry there's nothing we can do then"

Customer "But, what, wait, waah, waah, waah. It's not fair"

Me "This is why we advise all customers to get an e-receipt, bye"

Also me "Who's next please, sorry to have kept you waiting. Would you like an e-receipt? Oh you would because you just saw what happened to the last customer..."

BlaueLagune · 04/12/2019 11:06

Dragon, not sure if you know but there is no legal requirement to have a receipt if the item is faulty, only to prove it's been bought (so a bank statement would do).

And people are not going to provide your employer with their personal data so that they can enforce their legal rights.

DragonontheWagon · 04/12/2019 11:09

Blaue I'm not talking about faulty items. I'm referring to items they've just changed their minds about after getting home and thinking about their purchase. I'm aware of the legalities regarding this subject.

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 04/12/2019 12:31

Well for a £2 pair of socks I've never requested a refund, but for everything bigger the retail assistant has always helped been lovely and helped me. Just good customer service I guess. I've never said "wah" though or been expected to...

Not getting into electronic receipts unless it's for something that's actually valuable. Not handing out email addresses left right and centre, I get more than enough junk mail,

EmpressLesbianInChair · 04/12/2019 13:07

I stopped going to Paperchase because of the amount of upselling every time I went in.

I know it's not the staff's fault, but there are two other card shops close by where I know they'll simply sell me what I want without the hassle.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 04/12/2019 13:26

WH Smith - do you want this massive bar of chocolate? No!

Here's a random voucher! No!

I went in WHS today (and not just to check out how dirty the carpet was!) and used the self-service till. It spews out all of the pointless 'offer' coupons that nobody ever wanrts or uses, but you have to press a button if you want your actual receipt. Then, you have to wade through all of the offer coupons plus the great many offer coupons left there by previous customers to find your own actual receipt.

It's not much different if you use a staffed till. They give you a bundle of silly coupons, but don't even offer you a receipt. If you ask for one, they look all perplexed and flustered as if nobody has ever asked them for one before and it's a very bizarre request to make.

Why do they do it? They can't even lie and claim it's to save paper and the environment. They've basically deliberately programmed their tills to create and leave litter all over the front of the store.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 04/12/2019 13:29

Why do they do it?

They being the high-up management bods, of course - I know the ordinary staff members have nothing to do with it. I'm sure they hate it as much as any customer does.

I wonder if, when they advertise for cleaners, they specify 'must have previous experience in handling and disposing of large quantities of waste paper' ?!

CoffeeRunner · 04/12/2019 13:42

Morrison’s self service tills.

Always needs staff assistance. Never any staff around.

I understand that the whole point of self service tills is to cut the number of staff needed. But if they aren’t going to get enough staff on duty they need tills that work properly.

EmpressLesbianInChair · 04/12/2019 13:44

It's not much different if you use a staffed till. They give you a bundle of silly coupons, but don't even offer you a receipt.

Last time I bought something at WHS, I was holding out my hand to return the coupons as I glanced down at them & realised I actually wanted the top one.

I was very surprised.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 04/12/2019 14:44

I don't know if it's just our local Asda or a new 'feature' of all of them, but they've recently changed the naggy reminder voice.

Before, if you scanned something and didn't put it in the bagging area within 5 seconds or so, it would say "Thanks - that scanned. Please now put it in the bagging area" as a helpful reminder and also an unwritten PA warning "Look, Chummy - don't think you can nick that now without me noticing!" (although I would have thought you actively wouldn't scan something if you intend on not paying for it?!)

Now, it's saying "Thanks - that scanned" the instant you've scanned it. It's the checkout equivalent of pressing somebody's doorbell repeatedly until they open the door, even when you can see them walking down the hallway. So irritating, I have to turn the sound right down - and potentially miss out on any helpful notifications.

phoenixrosehere · 04/12/2019 14:54

@Insideimsprinting

Love this.

Actually had a customer’s friend complain to me about a bag costing 5p and in her country they don’t charge.. also saying that I know you have no control over it yet still continued to complain despite not having made a purchase.

TheTinselrati · 04/12/2019 15:02

dear retailer - just bacuase I've brought my own reusable bag, doesn't mean you can just pass me a bundel of tangled unfolded clothing, looking like jumble rather than new items I have just purchased from you. I'd still like my purchases to be at least moderatly folded before I put them in by bag.

Scorpio75kaz · 04/12/2019 18:21

@rosewils that’s my pet hate too 🙈🤣

Tessabelle74 · 04/12/2019 18:30

@rosewils
When the cashier gives you your change as coins on top of notes or receipt so bloody awkward and annoying.

We do this so you know we've given you the correct change 🤦‍♂️

bellocchild · 04/12/2019 18:31

itstootsmcgee: we have a new Superdrug locally and it's good. I keep my loyalty card on my mobile. They took £2 off a £12 bill today as a result...

Lincolnfield · 04/12/2019 18:35

WH Smith! I want a newspaper not a ginormous block of chocolate for a £1 and, if you use the self service till it ALWAYS spews out your change in 5p pieces! Until you go into WH Smith, you will never know just how many 5ps there are in the world!

GingerLiberalFeminist · 04/12/2019 18:40

I really hate hate hate the seemingly new practice of till staff with headsets. The staff who are meant to be serving you are chatting and giggling away to their colleagues.
It's as rude as when someone is on their phone imo!

Lincolnfield · 04/12/2019 18:44

@ DragonontheWagon

I refuse to have e-receipts because far too many people already have my email address already and I get enough crap sent to me. It’s a marketing ploy so the retailers can bombard you with messages offering discounts’, ‘sales’ etc, etc.

If people are unable to hang on to a till receipt then to be honest it’s their problem if they can’t get a refund. Having said that, if an item is faulty you don’t need a receipt. Consumer Rights Act 2015.
