To find these retail practices annoying

  1. Having to pay 10% service charge added to the bill (with no pre mention of the fact) in Yo Sushi - which is expensive enough for what it is anyway. I only noticed when I read it on the receipt afterwards. I always tip waiting staff 10% anyway but I give it in cash to the actual server so I know they get it. If Yo Sushi want to pay their staff higher wages, they can do it themselves.

  2. Lush - I know some people hate it but I don’t. I like their products but I can assure you that I buy FAR LESS when some stranger is standing beside me, disturbing my rare moments of peace and making me smell stuff I’ve no interest in.
    Stop it Lush!

I love Lush and the Body Shop but I avoid going there unless I know exactly what I want. I really don't like being hounded while browsing and I don't understand why they are encouraged to do this. The staff in the Body Shop kind of hover around the door and it's really off putting. I now don't browse in those shops which is a shame because if left to my own devices I would probably buy every time I go in.

On the other hand, I was in Debenhams buying shoes the other week and I couldn't find anyone for ages to get my size shoe. If I hadn't needed new work shoes I would have just left the shop.

Localocal · 05/12/2019 09:09

Yes, @rosewils! So annoying!

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 05/12/2019 09:24

When you are given a coupon, usually Boots, that’s for your next purchase, when it would’ve been nice to be able to just use it on the current purchase hmm

That is entirely the point though. They do it to get you to come back again.

As rude as you think putting money down on the counter is to you, we really aren't trying to be.

Many moons ago I worked Tesco tills. I would patiently wait for the customers to rummage around in their bags and have my hand clearly "pre-extended", waiting to take their cash. And they'd see it, but then deliberately swerve round me to place a bunch of coins on the flat surface, making me scrabble around to pick them up.

So I'd put their change back down in the exactly the same way. And if I could, it'd be change made out of more change (so 4 x 5ps instead of 1 x 20p).

purpleme12 · 05/12/2019 09:28

Gosh I can't say I give it a thought whether the money's in my hand or on the counter. Not really bothered about change either. I do think some things are not worth getting bothered about! And if shop person has put my money on the counter on purpose as above it would be a bit silly cos I wouldn't be bothered!

Wintersleep · 05/12/2019 09:52

I think they've had a training session at our local Co op because all of a sudden they're sooo interested in how my day has been and what I'm doing that evening. There's one shop assistant there that I have been chatting to for as long as I've lived here and I know it's sincere from them but I don't really know the others so it feels impersonal

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 05/12/2019 09:53

I get grumpy when the checkout or clothes assistants don’t say “that’s £44.99 please” etc and just expect me to read it off the till display. I can read it, but it’s just another tiny nail in the coffin of pleasant human interaction. (I always say hello to them when it gets to my turn).

purpleme12 · 05/12/2019 09:58

I quite like the chatting actually they're just being friendly

fivesecondrule · 05/12/2019 10:16

The chatting is much better than when you go to the till and the assistant just carries on their conversation with their co-worker without even looking at you. Then barks at you how much you owe, like you're a complete inconvenience and the shoves whatever you've bought at you. This happened to me twice last week- the worst was when I went to a very quiet River Island to buy my DD some shoes. I was perfectly lovely to the SA but figured straight away she wasn't in a very good mood. The heel of the shoe ripped the paper bag I had from the previous shop. I asked if I could buy a bag to transfer all my shopping into and she literally just stood with this rotten smirk on her face watching me struggle- I asked if she had a bin for the ruined bag and she just pointed at the counter. I felt like bloody throwing it at her. Really does make me wonder why they think being horrible makes their day any more pleasant.

egontoste · 05/12/2019 10:20

@VenusTiger At my local Morrisons, you have the milk at the start of a very long aisle, next to which you find the yogurts, millions of different ones, then followed by all the other potted desserts, then trifles and whatnot. You have to walk past all that lot and go round the corner to find the cream. They do manage to put the tea and coffee together though.

On the other hand, instead of putting the couscous with the rice and pasta, it isn't there, but with the gravy granules instead. And flavoured packet rice isn't with the other rice, it is somewhere else entirely. Opposite the baked beans I think.

The large Morrisons in a nearby town has just recently had a complete makeover and reorganised everything completely differently to how it was before. DH has been in there and said never again. I haven't dared venture in yet Grin

purpleme12 · 05/12/2019 10:43

@fivesecondrule if they're just plain horrible like that I'm just the same back

VenusTiger · 05/12/2019 11:48

@BuzzShitbagBobbly I specifically pointed out Boots, because you get a no.7 coupon to use within a month when you’ve just purchased no.7 make up that’ll last 6 months Hmm

JaffaMum · 05/12/2019 11:49

I used to live in Singapore and it was most definitely the worst over there and makes the UK retail experience a million times better in comparison.
In singapore you would be followed around like security even when you told them you didnt want any help, anything you picked would follow with do you want to try it. Personal space wasn't respected either as they'll be right up in your face. On quite a few occasions I just put things down and walked out of shops.

US is also fairly high on the harassment scale, but it's not as bad. It's like they've attended a cult like training programme beforehand and always smiling, asking how you are etc. I remember once going into Victoria Secret minding my own business looking around and a sales assistant came over in that I'm so excited youre here enthusiasm and that natural loudness telling me of all their offers and that for my size which is on the larger size even identifying the cup range I was and where in the shop they will items for this. I was mortified that she had observed me that closely and then felt she could come over tell me this univited.

No need to give me the Hmm face Grin

Boots know you like No 7. They know you bought No 7 today and so you are likely to buy it again, especially if there is a discount for it! They give you the voucher in the hope you take advantage of the discount now, rather than wait 6 months. Its not like makeup goes off, so its a reasonable assumption.

Or you might give your No 7 voucher to a friend and tell them you use xyz prduct and here's a voucher for money off it.

I don’t like Debenhams attempts to push their store card (ie credit card) with every purchase. I really feel a credit card isn’t a financial decision to be taken out on a whim at the tills. In the very unlikely event I was going to be lured in by 10% off my purchase I’d want to be spending more than £15!

DragonontheWagon · 05/12/2019 12:42

Moonrise but you have to realise that any store pushing a card, the requirement to do this comes from on high.

Sales assistants will get in to trouble if caught not offering them, as do their bosses and their bosses bosses.

So just politely decline and remember, these people are being paid nmw and they have to push the card to keep their jobs.

Devereux1 · 05/12/2019 12:46

email receipts
storecards
loyalty cards
want something else with that
bar of chocolate with my petrol
bar of chocolate with my pen
look at special offer
did I know that...
would I like to take this opportunity to..

I am finding that I am going through my shopping life saying "no... no... no.... no.... no... no". I'm on automatic No Leave Me Alone pilot now.

EmpressLesbianInChair · 05/12/2019 12:47

I've taken to expressing appreciation when I'm not upsold to.

MoonriseKingdom · 05/12/2019 12:51

Dragon I am well aware. I am always polite in my refusal. My husband works in retail (own shop) so I see all the difficulties involved.

I've often thought that. Being told that you get 10% of your first purchase after signing up, when you're only buying a pack of pants, is a cast-iron perfect reason NOT to sign up, at least until a later date.

Same reason as, if something's on BOGOF but they only have one left, I then don't buy it, whereas if there hadn't been any offer, I'd have been happy to have just narrowly managed to get one and cheerfully paid full price for it.

Maybe the senior management have sort of thought this through and come to the faulty conclusion that people will say "Wait a moment" and then do a 2-minute shopping spree, scooping up every item in the shop that they've ever considered looking at and bundling it on to the counter, declaring "I'll take it! Now, what were you saying about this card I need to get?!"

Maybe if they were offering 75%, or even 50% off - but for 10%? I think not. If anything, it could perpetually deter some people from buying anything except absolute essentials, saving up all their desired purchases for this one massive shop, where they'll score 10% off the lot, that they never quite get around to doing.

StrawberrySquash · 05/12/2019 12:58

All the crap that you know comes from on high like fake questions, upsell, following you round the shop. Stuff that isnt good customer service.
And yes, leave room for my handbag on the counter next to all the crap you want to flog me.
Aisles so full you can't get round. Terrible for buggies and wheelchairs.
Card only self service tills. I'm looking at you, Waitrose. Having self service tills closed when there's a big queue. You can't even be arsed to give us a single member of staff to share. That is v poor.

Devereux1 · 05/12/2019 15:41

All the crap that you know comes from on high like fake questions, upsell, following you round the shop. Stuff that isnt good customer service.

It comes from some two bit marketing agency who comes in, pitches to the marketing team, some two bit staff member there will just automatically think this is the way to do things because it makes them look like they've got initiatives around the store and on and on it goes. I doubt anyone really high up believes any of this or wants any of it.

BlaueLagune · 05/12/2019 16:15

Card only self service tills. I'm looking at you, Waitrose

Yes, this! I hate it too. I know it doesn't matter in the scheme of things but if I am only spending 80p on something (yes, it's possible, even in Waitrose :) ) it's so annoying to have to use a card. I prefer to use cash for anything under £5.
The other thing about self-serve tills (at least the ones in Sainsburys) is that they seem to be programmed to give you rubbish small change. So if, for example, your change is 20p, you might get 2 x 5p ad 5 x 2p rather than a 20p or even 2 x 10p. That's REALLY annoying Xmas Angry

BlaueLagune · 05/12/2019 16:16

Having self service tills closed when there's a big queue

Yes this too. You shouldn't generally have to queue to use a self-service till. I realise that sometimes it's because they are very busy, but often it's simply because they have 6 tills and only 3 working/active.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 05/12/2019 16:36

Two bit staff member? Hmm The ones helping run retail shops so you can buy products?
