Inspired by another, more serious thread. Am curious.. how many Mumsneters have, at some point in their lives taken anything stronger than smoking a bit of weed?

Yanbu for yes
YABU for no

Alcohol is a drug, it's just the only one not illegal so anyone who doesn't use drugs but drinks just doesn't like to break the law.

dangerrabbit · 01/12/2019 09:56

I have when I was in my teens and 20s and had a nice time, taken everything except heroin and crack. Not had anything at all since I had kids, I now work with kids involved in county lines and see the destruction it causes so would never take anything again for that reason.

CookPassBabtridge · 01/12/2019 10:02

YANBU. Pills were a big thing in my student days (2005-2007) enjoyed every minute.

amusedbush · 01/12/2019 10:05

Nope. I’ve smoked weed twice and didn’t enjoy it either time. I don’t really drink either.

I’m very boring Smile

OrlandoInTheWilderness · 01/12/2019 10:23

Tried weed once and prefer to get drunk!

Never been tempted by anything else. I've had lots of friends who used to do pills/coke etc when I was out with them but it never appealed to me. TBH it certainly didn't make them as fun as they think it did - people off their faces are bloody boring to be around IMO. But then they probably thought that about the people who were plastered!

We all have our flaws - I preferred to get drunk. Still I don't do that like I used too!

Gwenhwyfar · 01/12/2019 10:31

I was expecting about a 50-50 result. 60-40 seems about right. What you do see is people who did/do drugs assuming that almost everyone does and people who don't do drugs quite often saying only a minority of their acquaintances do.

Madein1995 · 01/12/2019 10:31

Yep, although not your typical party drugs

Alcohol at 11 (yeah I class As a drug, and I drank before this but this is when drinking escalated)
Skunk at 15 which I didn't really like
Doamorhine after an op at 19 (realised I loved opiates and kept pressing buzzer for more)
Cocodamol and dihydrocodeine at 21ish

Ginfordinner · 01/12/2019 10:35

Very true Gwen.

I wonder if it is an age thing as well. When I was young ecstasy hadn't been invented and cocaine was horrifically expensive. It was called the Champagne drug due to how much it cost. Also, I don't think drugs were as widely available or as easy to get hold of (1970s)

Starlight2004 · 01/12/2019 10:35

Yanbu Quite a lot in my teens in the late 90s, but then I settled down and had babies young so that put a stop to my partying. Alcohol is in my opinion one of the most dangerous drugs!

Hjwk · 01/12/2019 10:37

Nothing. In my 20s, never smoked anything or taken anything and haven't had alcohol for years. Doesn't appeal to me at all.

dontgobaconmyheart · 01/12/2019 10:47

Why is weed different Confused. No- never taken any illegal drugs, never would. Never smoked a cigarette. I did the casual drinking thing at 18 but didn't like it and haven't drink since. I think taking illegal drugs recreationally shows an awful lack of judgement and regard for ones own safety.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 01/12/2019 10:47

Dope, LSD, Pethidine and Speed, few inhalants - teens - lots of drug use.
Alcohol not until early 20s.
Morphine - pain relief after OP.
Morphine and Tramadone - Kidney stones
Zopliclone and Benzo prescription addiction until late 30s (4 yrs addiction).

MissChananderlerbong · 01/12/2019 10:51

All my friends have but I havent. I get drugs tested though, but honestly have never been interested. They destroyed my brother so I guess I'm very scared of drugs

mizu · 01/12/2019 10:54

Oh university days! Yep. Took most things recreationally. Not a lot. Aged 16-24 ish I guess. Drank tons too. Early 90s. Always felt terrible the next day though and looking back I really couldn't hack the come down.

Mid 40s now and rarely drink now as the hangovers are too much and I couldn't even contemplate going to work with that feeling of having had too much to drink the night before.

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 01/12/2019 10:55

YANBU

Weed, speed, eccies.

I have never tried heroin as I've had opiates, both pethidine and morphine, for medical reasons and liked them way too much. I totally get how people end up addicted to smack.

On the other hand I've never even seen cocaine much less tried it, and don't fancy hallucinogens so never bothered with acid or mushrooms (and wouldn't touch the latter anyway as mushrooms are my pet hate food wise).

easyandy101 · 01/12/2019 10:56

YANBU and I still do, when the opportunity presents itself

7thlevelofthecandycaneforest · 01/12/2019 10:57

Mumsnet always surprises me with their chilled out views on drugs. Ignoring the fact they are illegal, the devastation they cause on the environment and abuse of the vulnerable that goes into creating it and getting it into the country would make me think it would be judged more harshly.

mizu · 01/12/2019 10:58

And reading back through this, like jenpop I had friends who went too far. One guy who the last time I saw him 10 ish years ago was homeless and seriously messed up. Was on his way to Oxford uni to read maths at 18 but never made it.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 01/12/2019 11:03

I know of a few peeps from the 90s who raved too hard and lost their mental health through pills/LCD.
Wouldn't touch drugs now as I know I have an addictive personality and as a CSA survivor I see why I took illegal substances in the first instance.

sonicshoegazes · 01/12/2019 11:05

Yanbu

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 01/12/2019 11:10

The ravers I knew in my youth have all come through unscathed. On the other hand a couple of people I went to school with have died from long term heroin (and all the shit it's mixed with) use of recent years, and a couple of others have spent their adult lives in and out of prison for the same reason.

The worst though was a lad I went to school with who dropped dead of a brain haemorrhage aged 16 after buzzing gas/spray paint/glue (their were various rumours as to the exact substance involved). Solvent abuse can be deadly even as a one off experiment but thankfully seems to have largely fallen out of fashion.

adaline · 01/12/2019 11:10

What you do see is people who did/do drugs assuming that almost everyone does and people who don't do drugs quite often saying only a minority of their acquaintances do

I think it definitely depends on who you hang out with. None of my group of friends were into drugs so someone who did try them would have really stood out - and not in a good way.

PlinkPlink · 01/12/2019 11:16

YABU - No

I think if I had taken them when I was younger, I would have gone off the rails. Had alot of issues back then. And I was afraid of taking them.

Knowing what I do now, I'd be happy to take some if I was offered. We want to go to Glastonbury and Boomtown so no doubt I'll get the opportunity to do so there. I'd always test first and crush, dab and wait.

I don't want to go through my life not trying things because I'm afraid. May be illogical to some. I have a rather liberal approach to drugs whilst still exercising caution.

The fear mongering around drugs irritates me greatly.

ForalltheSaints · 01/12/2019 11:21

I have not. Mainly to be able to say with all honesty that I have not. Wasn't offered to me when a teenager, decided in my early 20s to be the one who was unusual in that.

IdleBet · 01/12/2019 11:28

I agree 7thlevel drugs are cool but God forbid you don't use a mooncup or recycle wrapping paper. Just doesn't seem to correlate.
