Inspired by another, more serious thread. Am curious.. how many Mumsneters have, at some point in their lives taken anything stronger than smoking a bit of weed?

Yanbu for yes
YABU for no

I'm late thirties, public service worker , MH professional and have a masters degree. I have a bit orlf weed most nights. I began when my ex left me and i was close to suicidal, felt I'd lost everything. Was drinking a bottle of wine a night to pass out. My friend sent me some and I do not regret it. I think weed is a much more milder and less troublesome drug than alcohol, if you're over 25 and take it in some form other than smoking it. It rationalized me, stopped me from being so upset and gave me the ability to be able to think properly without the depressive cloud I was under. I also have chronic back pain and cannot believe how much it relieved me of it. My hair was fine and scraggly, it's just how it was, and now it is much thicker and more body to it. I dont know that weed did this, but I've made no other lifestyle changes.

However I was young in the late 90s and all my peers smoked weed, took ecstasy and acid and all sorts and I never did, was too scared by the effects.

Weed every weekend from 14-17
Coke and speed intermittently from 18-30
Spent 2 weeks smoking heroin when I was 25 and never did it again

I’m in my fifties and haven’t taken anything for 22 years other than alcohol

CareOfPunts · 01/12/2019 00:49

*If you've not taken party drugs you've never fucking lived.

You do not know or have any concept of what you are missing*

That’s alright, I’m quite happy with thar.

My boyfriend in my early 20s took a fair amount of drugs, fuck me he was as boring as fuck when he was on them.

I’m mid/late 40s so e etc was a thing when I was young

As for now I’m comfortable that none of my friends take coke or anything none of us are interested. I’d absolutely die if I was out and someone was racking up lines!

Emeraldshamrock · 01/12/2019 00:54

Lots over a 10 year period. I thought I was a party animal.
I have a damaged worn down septum on the right side it is agony in winter.
Have not taking drugs in 15 years, would never again. I am a different person now.

WaterOffADucksCrack · 01/12/2019 00:56

I've tried most of them. I was addicted to ketamine for a time. This was in Lincolnshire around 2012 when it started. I swapped drugs for family.

Cactusmum · 01/12/2019 01:21

nope, including weed or even a cigarette..

ILearnedItFromABook · 01/12/2019 01:39

Not even weed. No cigarettes or alcohol, either, for that matter. Just never found it appealing.

I saw how most people act when they drink, and that was enough to put me off alcohol. Drugs seem to be much the same thing, only they come with the added risk that they can kill you more easily, if you're unlucky, not careful, or predisposed to addiction.

As for the suggestion that you haven't lived if you haven't "partaken", some of us think it's sad if you aren't able to enjoy life to the fullest without relying on drugs to boost your mood or numb your emotions. To each his own way!

CrowleysBentley · 01/12/2019 01:51

I've taken most things, (except crack and heroin) in my teens and twenties.

I rarely even drink now, though I would smoke a bit of weed now and then if I knew where to get any around here, as it really helps my pain and insomnia. Unfortunately I don't so I take a variety of prescription painkillers and sleeping pills instead, which don't do the job nearly as well.

Amibeingnaive · 01/12/2019 01:52

Plenty of E, Ket, MDMA, speed and literally kilos of coke over the years.

Never weed though, which seems odd even to me. I just know I'd pull a whitey...

Oliversmumsarmy · 01/12/2019 01:54

The room starts spinning on a liqueur chocolate.

So I don’t want to find out what weed or something stronger does.

Macca84 · 01/12/2019 02:06

I've taken most party drugs in the past. Had the best time of my life in the 90s on ecstasy, then the worst comedowns off coke in the 2000s. Not proud - lost a friend aged 26 after taking a cocktail of drugs... I'd never touch them again.

notangelinajolie · 01/12/2019 02:10

No

This is my experience too.
A fucking waste of good money.
I do believe I was battling demons so partied harder for longer, it was the escape I craved.
I'm glad it is in the past though it plays on my mind hopeing my heart is okay. I'm much healthier now. Blush

Jocasta2018 · 01/12/2019 04:01

Early 20s....
Took speed once - racing heart scared me fartless.
Smoked weed once & fell asleep
Booze - makes me the colour of a beetroot & I get the whirlies even after just one glass of wine!

I have friends that used to take shedloads of drugs & drink from mid-teens onwards and they're the ones that are ok mental health wise, living normal adult lives. Whereas boring old me, I've been coping with Bipolar & hospital admissions & tons of meds & most definitely not living an everyday adult life with a job, partner, kids, etc.

Sometimes wonder whether I should've embraced the drugs & drink scene with the rest of them!

whatswithtodaytoday · 01/12/2019 05:18

Late 30s, only ever had a bit of weed (just made me sleepy) and once accidentally some speed, which I hated. I was too scared of the dangers to take anything else, but the vast majority of my friends did - it was very much party of our subculture (goth/grunge). I actively avoided going out with friends when I knew they were planning to take ecstacy and coke, as I found it made them utterly dull (obvs if I'd been taking it too I wouldn't have noticed).

I did like a drink and drank far too much from around 1998-2004, but only socially.

None of my friends now take anything except a bit of pot, we're all bringing up small children. I certainly don't think recreational drug use is a slippery slope for everyone. However, I do have acquaintances who have mental health problems due to their drug use when we were young. I also knew someone as a teen who sadly became addicted to heroin and eventually died of an overdose. It's all circumstantial.

JustaScratch · 01/12/2019 05:29

Dabbled in a few things in my early 20s (ecstasy, coke, mdma). Not touched anything for a long time. I am not proud of it mainly because of realizing the ethical implications of illegal drugs - the supply chains, etc. I'm very happy not to be a part of that anymore.

Daisychainsandglitter · 01/12/2019 05:55

YANBU

Steamfan · 01/12/2019 05:59

No, never - don't smoke either, and very rarely drink.

Sofast · 01/12/2019 06:02

Not even weed, or ever smoked a cigarette. All gross

BiblioX · 01/12/2019 06:05

Not done weed either. No interest.

Hagbeth · 01/12/2019 06:42

I haven’t ever and wouldn’t even know where to find them, -I’m 53. I never understood how you dare to swallow something bought from a dealer. I could kill you! Just that thought has kept me out of it my entire life, I never even wanted to try weed. Today I don’t even drink alcohol and I’m very happy with my choice.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 01/12/2019 06:42

Ive literally never been remotely interested in any of it. I feel fantastic all by myself so I'm never 100% sure what they would add.

Snuffkindle · 01/12/2019 08:02

I smoked a bit of weed in my twenties. Sometimes it made things hilariously funny or extremely sexy. Mostly I felt quite sick then sleepy. That's all I did. I was too scared to try ecstasy and there's no way I would have done anything else. I used to smoke and drink a lot. I haven't smoked for 15 years, still drink socially but can't handle hangovers so no longer to excess.

Vulpine · 01/12/2019 08:07

Pethidine was quite nice
