To dress my baby in black?!

But of a strange one.....

my mother thinks it’s “inappropriate” for me to dress my baby in anything black, and for me to dress any of my DCs (age 4, 3 & newborn) in band merchandise Hmm
This all stemmed from me showing her some things I’d ordered for Christmas, including a black babygrow with my baby’s name on it, and a Metallica T-shirt for my 3yo DS.

Personally I think her outrage and pearl clutching is a bit silly seeing as though DH and I wear band merch all the time. But then it got me thinking: what do other people think when they see babies/children dressed in black/band merch etc. Confused
Is it weird??

I don’t think it’s weird, I just don’t personally like babies in black.

ThePolishWombat · 29/11/2019 15:13

@Grumpelstilskin share the company name and I’ll be on that like a shot!!

When my twins were born (nearly 25 years ago) my mum bought dd a tiny black dress with a cream collar. She looked gorgeous in it but my mil was aghast at me dressing a baby in black. She didn't even like the little denim pinafore I got for her.

If the kind of band stuff had been available that you can get now you can be sure I would have pissed the mil off even more. Grin

Velveteenfruitbowl · 29/11/2019 15:17

Is it perhaps more the Metallica aspect than anything? I don’t think Antoine would raise an eye brown at a Beatles baby grow.

Krisskrosskiss · 29/11/2019 15:21

It's up to you they are your kids!
My gran used to be the same about any dark colours on babies... I can hear her voice in my head whenever I'm dressing my 1yo even in something navy blue or dark red 'oooh I do hate to see children in dark colours'
Maybe it's a generational thing?
I had some tiny band shirts for both my children I think they are very cute!

@Velveteenfruitbowl could be Hmm
But it’s not exacty news to my mum that Metallica and the like are pretty much constantly playing in my house

I think it’s more about appearances in this instance than the music itself.

Concestor · 29/11/2019 17:23

Nojustyou don't know how to tag. Both my kids chose their own clothes from about 18 months of not younger , as soon as they could point basically.

ThePolishWombat · 29/11/2019 17:34

Oh well....my mother will just have to stew over the “inappropriateness” of it. Because I’ve just received an email with an extra 20% off my favourite online retailer where I get a lot of my dcs clothes Grin
So off I goes to buy more....

I never got why people like to advertise their music taste on their clothes.

Ok... But why do they need to wear a t-shirt with the name on it?

WorldEndingFire · 29/11/2019 18:36

It's your child, put them in whatever you like. That is what everyone does, ultimately. Another poster mentioned the child being their own person but I'm yet to meet any baby that chooses it's own wardrobe based on its distinct personality as opposed to the whims and predelictions of its parents.

WorldEndingFire · 29/11/2019 18:37

*its, damn auto-correct

People put their babies in clothes with dumbo and Mickey Mouse on all the time. The baby hasn’t expressed a preference for these characters yet people don’t bat an eyelid. Band tshirts are the same imo

Not the same. Disney is aimed at children. I’d find it a bit odd to see a baby in band merch.
A bit like using your baby to say ‘look how quirky and interesting I am, I’m a hard rock fan!’

MissLadyM · 29/11/2019 18:51

I think babies and little kids in black looks very stylish!

MitziK · 29/11/2019 18:51

Sounds fine to me.

Why are saying they find this weird? Jesus

Ghuleh · 29/11/2019 22:21

My DD just turned 1 last week and she knows full well who metallica are. She also starts bopping and bouncing her head to Ozzy Osbourne. Her dad and I are metal heads, she'll only bop to thing with a heavy bass line and killer riff. MIL plays a lot of motown and whatnot around her, but she definitely has a preference.

Strokethefurrywall · 29/11/2019 22:33

Not strange in the slightest. My kids spotted an amazing array of band tshirts and black get up from the day they were born.

Easy to clean and I much preferred it over the "mommy's little monster" clothing.

And who decides something is tacky? Can we ban this overused lame retort?! I don't give a shit if someone thinks I'm "tacky", who the hell died and decided that a child dressed in a band tshirt was any "tackier" than a child wearing a shirt with a digger on it? Jesus, I'm astounded at the time people must have on their hands to judge others.

Anyway, here are some pics of my wonderfully tacky kids in their band tshirts!

I liked my little one in monochrome stuff

Steamfan · 29/11/2019 22:40

My son wore all sorts of band T shirts - and he had a baby denim jacket with Motley Crue's Wild Side badge on it. My mother was horrified. He was the only child in his class who liked Motorhead. And Alice Cooper

OccasionalNachos · 29/11/2019 22:49

H&M have lots of black, grey, striped etc vests and babygrows, I really like them.

The MyK range at Mothercare is also very monochrome and mustard. Nice.
