To dress my baby in black?!

ThePolishWombat · 29/11/2019 10:20

But of a strange one.....

my mother thinks it’s “inappropriate” for me to dress my baby in anything black, and for me to dress any of my DCs (age 4, 3 & newborn) in band merchandise Hmm
This all stemmed from me showing her some things I’d ordered for Christmas, including a black babygrow with my baby’s name on it, and a Metallica T-shirt for my 3yo DS.

Personally I think her outrage and pearl clutching is a bit silly seeing as though DH and I wear band merch all the time. But then it got me thinking: what do other people think when they see babies/children dressed in black/band merch etc. Confused
Is it weird??

I am extremely pale anyway so do look like Morticia Grin
My kids are mixed white and asian and have inherited more of their dads colouring than mine! So no fear of them looking like corpses like I do most of the time

My 3yo has a black linkin park tshirt and a steel panther one.

My mother thinks she looks like a boy when she wears them.

Celebelly · 29/11/2019 12:06

This would mark you out as someone I'd want to be friends with! Grin

DD is dressed in all manner of random stuff: Harry Potter stuff, dinosaurs, llamas... She is 9mo and cares not for any of them but I do so that's what she wears until she's old enough to voice an opinion!

NationMcKinley · 29/11/2019 12:12

ThePolishWombat mine too! They look amazing in black with their skin tone, it really suits them

Jaxhog · 29/11/2019 12:13

I think it's inappropriate for your DM to criticize what you dress your DCs in! Unless the clothing is dirty or insufficiently warm for the time of year.

Sounds quite cool to me!

SallyCinnamon3009 · 29/11/2019 12:15

I think it's cute! I put my 2 year old in band merchandise honestly don't see a problem with it! No different to putting them in football merchandise (which I also do)

SeaViewBliss · 29/11/2019 12:19

I don't see how it's any different from football loving families dressing their small DCs in football tops/kits. We all project our interests on to our kids, they will either enjoy them as much as we do or they won't.

Honeybee85 · 29/11/2019 12:19

I don’t dress my baby in black but I don’t see why it would be inappropriate. Not everyone likes the over the top cute, Disney style that baby clothes and goods often are. I do like it actually but I appreciate others feel different about it.

The other day I took some pictures with DS who is also a baby using photo filters from Facebook messenger. There was a really cool one that showed us as some sort of evil vampire cats including blood smears on our faces. I thought it was cooler then the cute bunny ones but my mum said it was highly inappropriate.

PineappleDanish · 29/11/2019 12:20

I don't think dressing babies in black is inappropriate.

I do think though that parents trying to showcase their own musical tastes through their toddler children or babies is tacky in the extreme.

BertrandRussell · 29/11/2019 12:26

My mother was very uncomfortable when I dressed my babies in black- she cane from a culture where black was very much associated with death. So I didn’t do it while she was around.

ScreamingValenta · 29/11/2019 12:26

I didn't even know it was considered inappropriate.

I suppose in summer babies dressed in black might overheat more easily, having a relatively large surface area and less developed temperature control abilities, but that would seem to be the only possible issue.

PixieDustt · 29/11/2019 12:28

My DS has a black baby grow and black jeans and a black pocket tee. Obviously he doesn't wear it all together but didn't think there was a problem with black 😂

MistyCloud · 29/11/2019 12:33

I don't understand the mean and catty comments about how only TEENS should wear band T-shirts/go to rock concerts/be a big fan of music, (and they usually think you have to be a CHILD to like stuff like Harry Potter/Doctor Who/Star Trek/Star Wars/Disney stuff etc etc...)

WTF? Where does it say that in the Law of the Land Manual? I definitely missed THAT memo!

I bet the same grumpy feckers hate anything fun, and are the same miserable sods who poo-poo people putting up their Christmas decorations and lights too early. Or who get a cute soft toy from their DH/DP for Valentines Day, or who enjoy Disney stuff or like Little Mix or Justin Bieber. They love sneering at, and looking down their nose at people; like they are somehow superior.

Stop being so bloody judgemental. I have had a bellyful of people like this in real life (always women!) making spiteful comments when my DH does something nice or romantic for me, or if I say I am going to a rock concert (or pop concert,) or if I buy a little beanie toy!

WTF is wrong with some people? So judgemental and mean. Live and let live! People doing things differently to you, doesn't make them wrong and you right, and it certainly doesn't make you superior!

managedmis · 29/11/2019 12:33

@ThePolishWombat

Any chance I can know where you got your Metallica shirt? I need a Queen one for DS

CheeseCakeSunflowers · 29/11/2019 12:39

I'm grandparent generation and my thoughts are, what a nice change. After years of working with this age group I hate pink on little girls, dress them in what you want.

The OP did ask...

Fr0g · 29/11/2019 12:45

would have thought that vomit and dribble stains would show more?

BigFatLiar · 29/11/2019 13:14

I'd suspect you were really goths.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 29/11/2019 13:19

Tbh i wouldnt want to dress a baby/young child in clothes you might describe as "cool". To me anything looking "cool" usually means aesthetics have been prioritised, often over durability ot comfort.

Babies and toddlers clothing imho should prioritise comfort, practicality in terms of nappy changes/mobility, and optimal protection from the elements. Not looking "cool".

jomaIone · 29/11/2019 13:23

Nothing your baby wears is their choice though. They might not like that pink dress and cardigan, or jeans and a top but that is what you choose as you're the one buying clothes so why is buying a band t-shirt any different?

I would dress my baby in black if there was more choice because I like how it looks. In fact just bought a black velvet party dress for my toddler. It is stunning!!!

ItsAPleasureSwingYouFuckNut · 29/11/2019 13:30

Definition of inappropriate = not suitable or proper in the circumstances.

So, those people who just love the word inappropriate - what are the circumstances here that mean dressing a kid in a band t-shirt isn't suitable, or proper?

pooboobsleeprepeat · 29/11/2019 13:34

Yabu to care what other people think. Why do you need mothers approval on what clothes your children wear?

WispaGoldsshouldcomeinmultipac · 29/11/2019 13:54

Fwiw, groups where people tend to wear black (goths and punks et al) tend to dress their children in bright colours so they're easier to find in a crowd when at festivals etc.
Clothing tends to get darker as they get older.

StrangeLookingParasite · 29/11/2019 14:32

Hee

There's quite a lot of other baby stuff, too.

Grumpelstilskin · 29/11/2019 14:42

Not weird at all but then I am biased, as my design company will be stocking black babywear next year Grin
