To dress my baby in black?!

ThePolishWombat · 29/11/2019 10:20

But of a strange one.....

my mother thinks it’s “inappropriate” for me to dress my baby in anything black, and for me to dress any of my DCs (age 4, 3 & newborn) in band merchandise Hmm
This all stemmed from me showing her some things I’d ordered for Christmas, including a black babygrow with my baby’s name on it, and a Metallica T-shirt for my 3yo DS.

Personally I think her outrage and pearl clutching is a bit silly seeing as though DH and I wear band merch all the time. But then it got me thinking: what do other people think when they see babies/children dressed in black/band merch etc. Confused
Is it weird??

I'd certainly rather see a child in a Metallica t-shirt than whoever the current manufactured boy band is.

Bonus points if they know all the words to "Enter Sandman".

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 29/11/2019 10:59

You should dress the baby in the miniature black heavy metal band t-shirts and leather skinny jeans but go out yourself wearing bright orange Peppa dungarees, fire-engine-red t-shirt underneath, yellow ducky wellies and your hair in bunches.

Anybody who judges either of you is NOT worth your time or attention.... Grin

greenlobster · 29/11/2019 11:00

Dress them in whatever colours and styles you want, and enjoy it before they start to assert their own preferences Grin
Black and Metallica have gotta be better than the twee crap plenty of parents put on their little kids - all the "daddy's little angel" and "perfect big sister" etc stuff. Ugh!

For the record, my daughter's first babygro was black and grey tie-dye.

ThePolishWombat love that little baby outfit you posted earlier, it's gorgeous.

PinkDaffodil2 · 29/11/2019 11:06

My DD 5 months is commonly spotted in England Rugby vests and batman onsies - she hasn’t complained yet Smile

ploopsie · 29/11/2019 11:09

You can buy black baby gros & I prefer dark ones.

To me it's better than dressing your kid in a tutu & headband or in the Victoria garb that the upper classes love.

MistyCloud · 29/11/2019 11:09

@ThePolishWombat

LOL, your family sounds ace! Grin

As a few posters have said, everyone chooses what their babies/toddlers wear anyway, and if someone IS a goth or a rock chick, then it wouldn't surprise me at all, if their kiddies have similar 'tastes' Grin

I know someone a bit like this - huge on grunge, and loves Soundgarden, and Nirvana, and the Foo Fighters. She dressed all 3 of her kids (aged 6, 4, and 2,) in Kurt Cobain T-shirts the other week. OMG they looked so cool (and cute.) I wish I could post the pics, but I don't think she'd be too chuffed!

It doesn't look desperate or too 'try-hard.' Ignore those negative comments.

GO FOR IT! Smile

PotteryWheel · 29/11/2019 11:09

He looked like a tiny bald roadie.

DS, who was a very fair baby, looked astonishing in black and dark colours, and God, they were so practical.

Chickychickydodah · 29/11/2019 11:12

Go for it, I think it’s brilliant. I bought a AC/DC tea shirt for both my grandchildren aged 2&6 🤟🏻

Totally doing this on Saturday!

PsychosonicCindy · 29/11/2019 11:13

My youngest dds 5 & 3 wear their Halloween clothes all year round they love black love their t-shirts with bats & witches on, skeleton leggings, 5 yr old just got a metallica tshirt for her birthday. I don't see it as me pressing my tastes on them it's more that's the style I wear and my 13 yr old dd wears and they like it an want to be like us. No different to a mum wearing boden and her child wearing mini Boden surely?! Also their favourite films are hotel Transylvania, coraline and nightmare before Christmas it's just our family style.

ThePolishWombat · 29/11/2019 11:17

PsychosonicCindy that’s what I think - it’s how DH and I dress, so the DCs see it as normal and follow suit!

Not weird at all, I hate kids clothes with tractors, animals, spaceships, cars, etc on them!

PooWillyBumBum · 29/11/2019 11:19

I don't see why it matters. Personally I wouldn't spend that much on baby clothes (currently pregnant and baby will be living in second hand unisex bundles) but if you like it, then crack on.

BalthazarImpresario · 29/11/2019 11:22

My dd had the cutest pair of black dungarees, they looked great and I like kids in bolder colours.

RingtheBells · 29/11/2019 11:22

It's no different to dressing them in football teams clothes which many parents do

ballsdeep · 29/11/2019 11:22

I think it's weird. I wouldn't do it, especially a Metallica t shirt?

Hersetta427 · 29/11/2019 11:23

I think its odd - a 3 yr old has never even heard of metallica. It doesn't make them look cool - just makes you look a bit sad. My 8 yr old DS has a beatles t-shirt but only because he loves the beatles and at a recent karaoke night belted out a fine rendition of 'From Me To You' much to peoples surprise.

NationMcKinley · 29/11/2019 11:26

Years ago when I was pregnant with DS1 I saw a little girl of about 4 in a cafe with her mum. She was wearing a black A-line skirt, a black and red top and black patent Mary Jane shoes. She was eating avocado scooped out of the skin and she looked awesome. (This wasn’t some Uber trendy London cafe btw).

I love children dressed in black, can’t see the issue myself but then I was a goth. DS1 had a lovely range of Guns n’Roses tee shirts and now as a teenager loves a bit of heavy metal.

Laughing at the poster who suggested a moustache à la Pubert Addams. Wish I done that to mine when they could have objected Grin

Ginkypig · 29/11/2019 11:26

So it's ok for the kids and I to wear Boden or next etc on mn but if we wear gothicana or dc or band clothing or for some of you even the colour black we are juvenile (not out our teenage phase yet) and get Hmm faces. Aye ok then.

They are only clothes were not chopping puppies up with knives, bloody ridiculous.

EL2019 · 29/11/2019 11:26

The only baby clothes I got pearlclutchy about was a baby grow with the letters ASBO on it. I just thought it was tasteless and not funny. ( I didn’t see it on a baby, but for sale on a market stall).

Black / Metallica? Fine by me.

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 29/11/2019 11:27

Im not going to really judge the Metallica tshirt because my 3 yr old heard Ronnie Rising Medley on a random playlist once (DH and I aren't fans) and its literally been his favourite ever since Hmm. I'll be honest tho, whats the point in a 3 yr old displaying that band on their tshirt? He likes the sound, he doesn't know or care about the band. Its just adults projecting their preferences.

I dont really like black myself but as one of a range of colours you dress your baby in why not.

As soon as he was old enough to show preference i do follow DS lead on clothes, within reason. From age 2 it was clear he likes blue, red & orange, and he likes things to have pictures on - vehicles, animals etc. So that's what he wears!!

ItsAPleasureSwingYouFuckNut · 29/11/2019 11:29

Tbh I'd think you weren't out of your teenage phase yet

How bizarre. So, only teenagers can like bands?

If I saw your kids in a Metallica t-shirt OP, I would think 'cool'. Clearly I am still in my teenage phase though.

Nanny0gg · 29/11/2019 11:29

No objection to the t shirt but I'd hate the babygrow.

You did ask...
