How anyone can vote Tory?

Stella8686 · 28/11/2019 23:40

After seeing some pro labour and pro conservatives posts recently I am genuinely interested to see what makes someone vote conservative

OTHER THAN

  1. Hard/ quick Brexit
  2. Looking after your own finances
  3. Hatred for Labour/ Corbyn

ABIU to not be able to think of any single other reason to vote conservative?

I'm also presuming the welfare state will be the first to go come the end of next week.

malificent7 · 08/12/2019 10:59

Qhy does it have to be between Labour and the Tories though? There are other parties. Im not voting for either of those two. I am more left wing but in my constituency labour don't stand a chance.

malificent7 · 08/12/2019 11:00

Why even...

malificent7 · 08/12/2019 11:01

And i have had minimuum wage jobs etc due to redundancy but tbh if it wasnt for benefits i would have starved. My fault? No...employers should pay their workers fairly.

takeittogo · 08/12/2019 11:02

The welfare state won’t disappear, that wouldn’t be possible or practical. However, it will not be generous.

malificent7 · 08/12/2019 11:10

As long as it's thete. I think people need to feel that their government makes them safe. Who wants a government that makes them feel unsafe and disenfranchised?

BlackCatFan · 08/12/2019 11:14

So what will happen then @takeittogo I take it you're in the know?

takeittogo · 08/12/2019 11:15

No idea. It’s not my problem. I’ll sort myself out and I imagine most people are quite capable of doing so also.

BlackCatFan · 08/12/2019 11:15

I'm guessing food vouchers and a minimal amount of housing benefit, much like the USA.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 08/12/2019 11:17

people suggesting that people visiting food banks are just after the free food.

Obviously so badly informed they don't realise that you can't just pitch up at a food bank willy nilly and say you need food.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 08/12/2019 11:18

. However, it will not be generous.

It's not "generous" as it is .

rhubarbcrumbles · 08/12/2019 11:21

if you want to vote Not Tory (rather than for anybody else) this might be useful:

www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/dec/08/tactical-voting-guide-2019-keep-tories-out-remain-voter-general-election

Topazance · 08/12/2019 11:22

Because Labour aren't saying what they're going to do. Maybe brexit maybe not. They might have another referendum in a couple of years maybe not. None of them are honest but Corbyn is not saying anything! The people have voted. If brexit doesn't happen then what's the point of people voting having voted for it if their opinions aren't taken any notice of? Voting Conservative is the only chance we have of brexit imo. They're won't be any jobs or housing if we open the flood gates. Boris has the right idea with a points system like Australia so only skilled people can enter the UK instead of letting anyone in so that they can live off benefits here and get given council accommodation because they're on benefits! Those that do work are taking jobs that are already scarce for those already here. Where does that live the future for our dcs? Before anyone says that's racist-it's about space not race.

To those talking about smaller businesses flourishing under the tories, where have you been for the past 9 years? Small businesses have suffered massively, town centres have become ghost towns. My family’s shop closed after 100 years of trading 3 years ago causing several loyal employees to lose their jobs. Retailers big and small are closing everywhere and the giants are taking over and dodging tax. How on earth can you want that to continue, or believe a Tory vote will make that better? It’s what’s happening now under them.
As for the nhs and education, having worked in both through the change from labour to conservative I have seen real cuts from the latter coming into power having a real impact on the children I’ve worked with. Fewer staff, resources and equipment meaning more waiting times, difficult choices and making do with old inferior equipment.
You’ve had Tory rule and brexit crap for 9 years, if you’ve enjoyed what that has brought, like the increasing divide between rich and poor and want more of the same that’s what you get if you vote Tory, you know what’s in store.

user1471448556 · 08/12/2019 11:58

I could understand why people voted for Cameron's One Nation/Pro Business Tories. Have no clue why anyone would vote for Johnson and his Brexity/Ukippy version of the Tories. Jonathan Pie sums it up for me:

I'm no fan of Corbyn, but I will be voting tactically for Labour, despite being a member of the Lib Dems. Corbyn has no chance of a majority, so don't understand those so scared of a Corbyn government - he would have to work with others.

Karwomannghia · 08/12/2019 11:59

The brexit or remain split has split the country. It makes sense to actually try and come to a consensus.
Half of the voters voted to remain and don’t want ‘brexit done’. Do these people not matter at all?
Going in with an open mind to try and actually talk and negotiate something people can all settle for is better than repeatedly barging in different directions with a battering ram.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 08/12/2019 12:15

I'm guessing food vouchers and a minimal amount of housing benefit, much like the USA

That would still mean a safety net and maybe would put an end to claims where a person can physically work but chooses not to or does just a few hours. I doubt anyone would want no safety net but it should be just that, not a system funding people’s lifestyle choices.

BlackCatFan · 08/12/2019 12:25

@IceCreamAndCandyfloss but this seems so backwards. The Tories introduced UC, with the idea being that you could work just a few hours and still receive the benefit, plus get to keep some of your wages. This is good for people like single parents, and disabled people who aren't able to work full time.

BlackCatFan · 08/12/2019 12:26

No one "chooses" not to work @IceCreamAndCandyfloss

ginger1981 · 08/12/2019 12:34

I work for a Prep school from which Labour are planning to remove their charitable status. I still can't vote Tory. When you look at the state of the country now: teachers funding resources, increased use of foodbanks, unemployment, the NHS, police, crime...you see the effects of a Tory government-a party for the rich. Also, that Boris made those wishing to join his party sign an agreement that they will vote in favour of his Brexit deal. This is not a democracy, it is a dictatorship.
People claim that Labour's costings are unrealistic. Why should they be? Look at countries like France where, yes, tax is higher, but everyone benefits. Per head, the UK spends (invests may be a better word), a fraction of the amount compared to other countries such as Finland. Why are we afraid to create a fairer society? Why should it be that only the top 5% that benefit?
I understand that it is difficult to imagine Corbyn at the helm, but at least the alternative has proven himself to be a liar, a racist as well as a backstabber to those even in his own party!

I am also concerned that votes will be effectively thrown away out of Brexit fatigue and a belief in the 'Get Brexit Done' rhetoric. It will take years to forge any sort of deal-getting 'Brexit Done' is a loooooooong game which will be a political football for elections to come, not just this one. The only way to 'Get Brexit Done' would be to stay in the EU with all the hard-won deals and negotiations we have forged over the decades (that is if we are allowed to stay after the appalling, sniggering behaviour of Farage et al.) How people can continue to fall into these traps: 'We voted, so get on with it' 'The people have spoken'...

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 08/12/2019 12:37

No one "chooses" not to work

Of course people do. Plenty of threads on here about choosing to claim so they can be a SAHP, working just x hours as it suits there lifestyle etc. Very naive to believe everyone that claims has no other choice.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 08/12/2019 12:42

The people have spoken'...

Ginger can you imagine when Brexit goes tits up, guess who Johnson et al will blame.

"Well we only implemented what 'the people' asked for It's all their fault."

rhubarbcrumbles · 08/12/2019 12:51

Despite the fact that it was that apparently pig-loving muppet Cameron who decided to have the referendum.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 08/12/2019 14:05

rhubarb Indeed However it seems to have become accepted lore now amongst some that "people " were crying out for a referendum which is why Cameron did it. (Nothing to do with him trying to shut up the far right wing of his party.)

Total rubbish of course.

Xenia · 08/12/2019 14:50

Leave won the referendum (I voted remain like many Tory and indeed Labour remainers).

The Tories will not abolish all benefits next week or ever. It is the safest party to keep a good welfare state as it manages the nation's finances better than Labour does.
