To think that it's impossible to vote for Jeremy Corbyn after last night's interview?

To be upfront : I would never vote for Labour or Corbyn anyway, for various reasons.. But that was not a good interview and had I been considering it I would be very concerned now.

The Bloomberg article of course has a completely misleading title in that it should say, Corbyn's spending blitz gets backing from leftist academics,

Alsohuman · 28/11/2019 11:56

Yup, back to not trusting experts.

Sakura7 · 28/11/2019 12:08

Insinuating that the CBI is left-wing is quite a bit of a leap.

The fact that the Tories are alienating business groups, who previously would have been favourable to them, shows how badly the Tories have damaged their reputation as the strong, stable, economically sensible option. The party has been overrun by right wing populism, and not surprisingly that has alarmed the business community.

Gin96 · 28/11/2019 12:09

Has Labour published anything on this? Do they have time scales, round about costs? I can’t find anything? Regarding Labour manifesto, I would vote on their manifesto if I thought even half of it was upheld but which bit will they uphold? I don’t think I can vote Conservatives but I need answers for Labour as this is a huge change there suggesting so I just need to understand how it will work.

Alsohuman · 28/11/2019 12:13

@Gin96, you’re working with the same knowledge as the rest of us.

Take Sakura’s wise advice:

^If you believe in small government, low taxes, minimal public spending and Brexit, vote Tory.

If you believe in paying a bit more tax so that public services such as the NHS and police force can be better funded, vote Labour.

If you're a Remainer, vote tactically for whichever of Labour/Lib Dem/SNP is most likely to keep the Tory out in your constituency.

Please do your research and make an informed decision, bearing in mind that no option will be perfect. It's a judgement call.^

CBI’s requirements of government at a glance:

“Provide me with a highly trained workforce (which I haven’t had to pay to train) and a perfectly running infrastructure (which I don’t want to pay to provide) with minimal regulation and no barriers to operations.”

No wonder they don’t like anyone at the moment.

EntropyRising · 28/11/2019 12:21

But leftist remainers do love the CBI.

EntropyRising · 28/11/2019 12:21

So it should have credibility on this thread, correct?

ReadtheSmallPrint · 28/11/2019 12:32

leftist remainers do love the CBI

Leftist remainers love whoever is supporting them at the time.

I love how David Cameron has suddenly turned into a ‘moderate’ on some of these threads compared to ‘far right’ Boris. They have conveniently forgotten about how vocal Boris was in opposition to the benefit cap when ‘moderate’ David Cameron and IDS introduced it.

Gin96 · 28/11/2019 12:38

I can’t vote without more information. The British economy is teetering on the edge of an abyss, will Labour push us in or push us away from the edge?

EntropyRising · 28/11/2019 12:42

Why don't you have more information? Haven't you been following the news?

Motoko · 28/11/2019 12:43

Look, because of our first past the post system, there are only 2 options, Labour or Conservative. If you vote for one of the smaller parties in most constituencies, it's basically a wasted vote. If you're in a Lib-Dem or Green constituency, then vote tactically, there are websites that tell you who to choose if that's the case.

But, as pps say, vote for whichever values generally align with yours. Gin you said you want to vote for Labour, so vote for them.

EntropyRising · 28/11/2019 12:45

I love how David Cameron has suddenly turned into a ‘moderate’ on some of these threads compared to ‘far right’ Boris. They have conveniently forgotten about how vocal Boris was in opposition to the benefit cap when ‘moderate’ David Cameron and IDS introduced it.

I think it's because he hasn't snubbed the famously thin-skinned President of the United States.

I think it's great that Corbyn would go into office having completely alienated him, don't you? He's really shown him what's what. It would be great to have a really strained working relationship with the US.

Sakura7 · 28/11/2019 12:53

The British economy is teetering on the edge of an abyss

Yes, after 9 years of Tory government.

Why don't you direct your questions towards your local Labour candidate? They would be best placed to answer them.

But leftist remainers do love the CBI

Two issues with this:

  1. 'Leftists' are no great fans of the CBI. However it is noteworthy when the CBI raises concerns about the Tories' flagship policy. The Tories are so damaging that they are bringing polar opposite groups together in opposition to them. That says something.
  1. Suggesting that anyone who doesn't support Brexit is a 'leftist' is downright ridiculous. Remainers can be found across the political spectrum and cannot be lumped into one group. The Brexit debate transcends traditional political divisions.

But you know all of that already Wink

Gin96 · 28/11/2019 12:58

@Entroypay because the information is not there, I follow the news all day everyday, everything I can get hold off but nothing. Every time the polls show Labour are in the lead, the pound drops. I’m not against what Labour are proposing but I need to understand it as this is huge change to our economy

Iggly · 28/11/2019 13:01

They have conveniently forgotten about how vocal Boris was in opposition to the benefit cap when ‘moderate’ David Cameron and IDS introduced it

Look at what boris did.

Did he vote against these cuts???

No, of course he fucking didn’t. Words mean nothing. Voting does the damage.

AhNowTed · 28/11/2019 13:04

Since we're quoting the FT, here's another where 163 economists and academics back Labour's plans.

Boris voting record

Alsohuman · 28/11/2019 13:06

Every time the polls show Labour are in the lead, the pound drops

When did the polls last show Labour in the lead? I certainly haven’t seen any. You may be a genuine don’t know @Gin96 or you may be a Tory voter but you really don’t come across as a possible Labour voter to me.

EntropyRising · 28/11/2019 13:10

The CBI favours big incumbent business at every turn - the EU is like a gift from the gods to them, because they have mastered the regulatory regime and upstarts don't have a shot of competing with them.

So you are correct that it should be a sworn enemy of the left, but weirdly, leftist remainers have become enormous fans over the past three years.

I think what you mean is that leftist remainers don't like what the CBI has to say about Corbyn, they want you to ignore that and instead pay close attention to what they have to say about the EU.

Personally, I would ignore them entirely - I just picked them as a show of deference this seemingly remainer-heavy thread.

Sakura7 · 28/11/2019 13:11

Every time the polls show Labour are in the lead, the pound drops.

That's simply not true. The Tories have been in the lead since the election was announced, though Labour are narrowing the gap.

The pound has dropped whenever the likelihood of a no deal Brexit has increased. That's it. Investors prefer a Corbyn government to a no deal Brexit. There are tons of articles online about this, do some research.

Gin96 · 28/11/2019 13:22

Pound hits six-month high against the euro after YouGov poll

Sterling is strengthening after a much-anticipated opinion poll showed that Boris Johnson is on track to win a comfortable majority next month.

The MRP poll, carried out by YouGov, predicted that the Conservatives would win 359 seats, up 42, while Labour would fall to 211 seats and the Liberal Democrats would only gain one seat, giving 13 MPs.

This would give Johnson a majority of 68 - likely enough to push his Brexit deal through the Commons.

Alsohuman · 28/11/2019 13:26

Then stop with the faux innocence, cast your vote the way you always intended and stop wasting our time @Gin96.

IceCreamFace · 28/11/2019 13:29

I wonder how Tory voters can know full well that they're voting for a sociopath who believes in nothing but is own self interest sell off the NHS, leave disabled people without income, slash mental health services, doom the country to recession but get their knickers in a twist about Corbyn.
