I personally believe that the EU in its current form is crumbling.

It's only stable as a monetary union as long as everyone obeys the fiscal rules, as Greece showed all too well. The United State's stability is due to the fact that fiscal policy is controlled at the federal level and that didn't keep us from having a civil war.

You were quite wise to keep the GBP. I'm also not optimistic about the future of the EU.

AngelicInnocent · 26/11/2019 19:46

Yes chatty, I think similar.

scaryteacher · 26/11/2019 19:48

I think the violence used against the Catalans and the Gilets Jaunes, with EU blind eyes turned (and connivance in the case of the latter) will come back to bite them. The Greek islands are at breaking point with migrants, and Frontex have been taken to court for appropriating private property there. The V4 are on manoeuvres, Juncker has an extension, and VdL can't form a Commission. I'm not sure that much has been done to stop the selling of passports (looking at Malta), and some EU Member States are screwed financially. I'm waiting for Deutsche Bank to implode and the Italian banks as well. There is trouble ahead with the forthcoming Basel banking rules and banks having to increase their capital as well.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 26/11/2019 19:50

Yes Trewser, I saw it, what a Car Crash...

He did not come over well at all!

MarySidney · 26/11/2019 19:55

Yes, I think it will ultimately fall apart. Sooner or later some country is going to crash out of the euro, and there might well be a domino effect. I want us to be well out of it before that happens.

ChloeDecker · 26/11/2019 19:55

And Cyprus! Grin

GhostofFrankGrimes · 26/11/2019 19:57

Back to the brexit domino effect again? When you run out of debunked arguments do you just start at the beginning again hoping nobody will notice? Grin

Chattybum · 26/11/2019 20:01

Funnily enough Frank this is a place for conservative voters to discuss politics, the clue is in the title. Feel free to go elsewhere.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 26/11/2019 20:01

Just as a bit of light relief, I recommend this week's HIGNFY. Lots of topical humour and a good few laughs GrinGrinGrin

It's not the Brexit domino effect, but what is going on internally. The cracks are there if you look. When Merkel goes and AKK can't hold the CDU together, German influence will wane, especially with Laggard at the ECB post Draghi. Macron will try to force further integration, which won't go down well with some.

GoodMPreply · 26/11/2019 20:04

I posted the reply I got from my Tory PPC to my query about women’s sex based rights here www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3750492-Got-a-good-reply-for-a-prospective-parliament-candidate

So that’s why I’m voting Tory this year, for e first time ever.

Justanotherlurker · 26/11/2019 20:05

Has anyone seen the Corbyn/Andrew Neil interview?

Yeah, it was terrible, Momentum have already rallied to try and flood social media with other stuff and try and ignore it.

He didn't look like a proper Gammon like he did on the Channel 4 interview but he just come across the useful idiot that the he his.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 26/11/2019 20:24

That’s a very reassuring letter greatMPreply. Thanks for sharing!

ArseDarkly · 26/11/2019 20:27

Has anyone seen the Corbyn/Andrew Neil interview?

Yes and i'm looking forward to the Bozo one even more now, he's going to get skinned alive!

ThinkingNotTalking · 26/11/2019 20:29

I’m a NHS doctor.

Would never vote Tory.

Trewser · 26/11/2019 20:31

Yes and i'm looking forward to the Bozo one even more now, he's going to get skinned alive!

I agree it's not going to be pretty!

Can anyone please tell me what a government bond is if it isn’t ‘government borrowing’? I thought issuing bonds was the way the government borrows money? Was it an attempt to deflect the question?

MissConductUS · 26/11/2019 20:44

Can anyone please tell me what a government bond is if it isn’t ‘government borrowing’?

Bonds are absolutely government borrowing and have to be repaid with interest.

ReadtheSmallPrint · 26/11/2019 20:53

OK, I have only the most rudimentary grasp of economics, so please bear with me. If, say £300bn in bonds is suddenly issued, would the interest rate be higher? Could this affect the value of the pound? Could this drive up inflation and cause UK interest rates to increase?

MarySidney · 26/11/2019 20:54

Back to the brexit domino effect again?

If you're replying to me, where did I say anything about a Brexit domino effect? I was referring to the euro.

EntropyRising · 26/11/2019 21:15

Well, obviously yes to all, but I sense that this is not actually a real question.

ReadtheSmallPrint · 26/11/2019 21:21

EntropyRising as I said, I’m not an economist. I’m fudging together bits and pieces of knowledge. However, nobody seems to be asking these questions about the Labour policies. I keep hearing stuff about how great public utilities would be in public hands, but at what cost? Who, in society, can least afford this wish fulfilment of Len McCluskey’s demands?

OK, well you should certainly google it for an unbiased account. Broadly, no, they cannot borrow enough at current rates to fund the ambitions outlined in their manifesto and yes, it would cause inflation, and on top of this there's the problem of who prices the buyout of the utilities, invariably it will be below market i.e. confiscation, which will cause capital flight and so McDonnell will initiate capital controls and the UK will be a full-blown pariah state.

EntropyRising · 26/11/2019 21:38

@GoodMPreply
That's an ace reply.
