GrinBovaryX, but I fear the fountains of hyperbole gush for evermore.

Someone will be along shortly to prove my point.

BovaryX · 26/11/2019 11:08

surely the two combined is going to be a nightmare for small businesses?

Logic suggests so. But something tells meI that neither McDonnell nor Corbyn are actively courting the entrepreneurial vote....

AngelicInnocent · 26/11/2019 11:09

Well I live in a Labour stronghold which had a huge leave majority so have been expecting it to swing toward Brexit party.

However, what I am seeing is a lot of people going Tory because they are worried about splitting the vote and letting Corbyn in.

He is widely regarded as a terrorist sympathiser around here (nobody is buying the trying to make peace narrative) and they don't like it.

We might actually get a Tory MP which I never thought I would see in my lifetime.

fivesecondrule · 26/11/2019 11:12

Guess not Bovary.... I employ 2 people and pay them above industry wages. They have been great for me and I like to think I treat them well in return- I just need them to be present for 37.5hrs that my business needs cover for. I genuinely can't afford another member of staff so I worry how I'll continue tbh. Guess I'll be covering the 10 hours a week I'll lose myself.

Wrt to part time workers, isn’t this what happens already? Over 40% of adults in this country don’t earn enough to pay income tax, even minimum wage workers would pay tax if working a minimum 35 hours per week.

BovaryX · 26/11/2019 11:17

It’s exactly this scenario which politicians should consider when drafting radical redistributive policies. And it’s exactly this scenario which will never have crossed the mind of any of the intellectual luminaries on Labour’s front bench...

fivesecondrule · 26/11/2019 11:24

Then surely that figure of 40% is only going to be driven higher then Simba? I understand there will be greater rights re redundancies under Labour which may make it more difficult to change current job contracts but surely this will affect the new job market? It doesn't sound like a great support to the economy. How many small businesses will collapse under this and how many will "collapse" and then re-emerge only employing part-time staff? Surely this won't be great for private pensions either? Economics is not my strong point so please forgive me because I can only speak from my own pov but these policies along with another 4 bank holidays to celebrate the saints don't add up to me from a small business owner... my business will struggle massively.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 26/11/2019 11:24

“It’s exactly this scenario which politicians should consider when drafting radical redistributive policies. And it’s exactly this scenario which will never have crossed the mind of any of the intellectual luminaries on Labour’s front bench...”

Agreed! Not everyone works in plush PR/IT ‘blue sky thinking’ operations in london.

Manufacturing.
Service based industries.
Shops.
NHS.
Teachers etc...

It doesn’t work. It’s a shit policy that will lead to hyper inflation for a plethora of reasons. It would take the country 20 years at least, to recover economically from the introduction of this ridiculous policy. It sounds lovely, who doesn’t want a 3 day weekend? But fiscally and business wise it’s a polished turd unicorn and workers and consumers will ultimately pay the price for it.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 26/11/2019 11:26

I have said before, on another thread, that a 4 day working week will also very likely increase the risk of zero hours contracts.

Limitedsimba123 · 26/11/2019 11:27

I agree however that minimum wage rise and 4 day week are badly thought out policies. I just think we all need to pay more taxes, both high earners and low earners, and find it shocking that 40% of adults pay no income tax at all when employment is supposed to be at record levels. What is the point of this NI giveaway for example? £2bn a year taken away from the public purse we can all have an extra £85 instead. Great stuff.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 26/11/2019 11:27

Well this is more sedate than its original edition! Perhaps certain prolific posters have temporarily run out of hyperbole

Actually a lot have decamped to a different thread, where the tone's more in keeping with their own ...

Puzzledandpissedoff · 26/11/2019 11:31

Oh, and the unproven "120,000 austerity deaths" is still being repeated, except it's now grown to 130,000

Not sure where the other 10,000 have come from ...

fivesecondrule · 26/11/2019 11:34

It's surely only the larger profitable corporations that can suck this up- the ones Corbyn seems to dislike so much??? The ones that are likely to be able to loophole overseas benefits or shut down UK sites to more favourable markets- I just don't get it.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 26/11/2019 11:34

I noticed that it’s now 130k too. Next wekk it will be 140k I’ve no doubt.

Poor old winston on the Speakwrite. He can hardly keep up.

scaryteacher · 26/11/2019 11:39

Puzzled Would that be the thread that is like the school playground? I was waiting for someone to mention it!!

This is another excellent point. Wealth is mobile and punitive tax regimes will trigger an exodus. When asked about this on Sunday, John McDonnell just shrugged and smirked. The pips won’t be squeaking though. They will relocate to a more amenable orchard....

As Harry the Owl said, some seem to think 1984 is a training manual.....

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 26/11/2019 11:44

“John McDonnell just shrugged and smirked.”

God, this man chills me to my very core.

He gives a pretty scary interview. I would not want to fuck with him, lest I land in a gulag.

Alsohuman · 26/11/2019 11:47

And you accuse the left of hyperbole.

EntropyRising · 26/11/2019 11:47

God, this man chills me to my very core.

Exactly. He was so scary on Politics Live last week when the Telegraph writer, completely unaware that he'd be joining, mentioned his 2017 civil service exercise on capital controls. He lost his shit with her. I hope she's OK Grin

Absolutely not. Those are going away too! Wink

BovaryX · 26/11/2019 11:52

mentioned his 2017 civil service exercise on capital controls

Ha! And of course, they have been used by some of the most admirable regimes in history. Or something.....
