To not want to go to A & E but I can't put weight on my leg!

I brisk walk twice a day including a short jog too once. I've being doing this for months with no issue.
Today whilst walking normally, coming out of a shop, my ankle kind of went from underneath me. It initially felt like something needed to click back into place. I hobbled a bit and it kept happening until I couldn't weight bare at all. I had to hop back to the car where fortunately I wasn't driving. It hurts whilst resting from my Achilles tendon right up my calf. I literally cannot stand on it for more than a split second. What am I supposed to do?! I can't keep hopping!! Is A & E the only place I can get crutches?

It's OK if the op has broken it they will land up in a and e later on when the bone nicks an artery and they suffer internal bleeding or when the broken bone fuses into the wrong place causing them to need surgery. I say this from experience as I broke mine as a toddler and the hospital would not xray it. I landed up in surgery and am supposed to go back in to finish the job now iv stopped growing. But you carry on thinking it will heal all on its own back to how it was. Obviously you have xray vision.

it's not appropriate to go to hospital with a minor sprain

It sounds like an Achilles tendon rupture than a 'minor sprain'. If Achilles tendon rupture you should be in a supportive medical boot asap to prevent further damage, and you may need surgery. And yes you often can still walk, which often delays diagnosis, potentially resulting in permanent problems.

Going to A&E is entirely appropriate. I get that the wait is frustrating. Take a tablet with movies downloaded or a book.

If you really won't go to A&E, you could see your GP, but if they think may be achilles tendon rupture they will send you to A&E anyway and you will have delayed getting treatment by waiting to see GP first. Also A&E will see more of these than your average GP. So personally I'd go to A&E asap, but if you won't then at least see somebody. And describe what happened, don't go in and say "I've got a minor sprain".

So I went to hospital! My leg gave way this morning. Xray was clear so its likely ligament damage. I've got crutches as I can't walk! Got to go back to clinic next week.

glad you went in the end

ChiaraRimini · 27/11/2019 13:25

Well done OP
By the way for anyone still reading. you can buy crutches off Amazon I got a pair for £15 last time I sprained my ankle. It's a real struggle to get to A&E for assessment without them so good to have them on hand if you are an accident prone household.

Glad you’re alive, rest up! Cake

And 👍 to you for coming back and updating / accepting the advice. Too many people argue the toss on AIBU and don't listen to good advice.

MollyButton · 27/11/2019 14:29

Thanks for coming back to tell us. I hope you get better soon Flowers

I can personally vouch that a sprain is as painful as a break/fracture.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 27/11/2019 14:59

Yep ,ligament damage can take longer to heal too so rest up and do exactly what they told you at the hospital. Glad you got it seen too.

Thank God/crunchy/fuck (delete as appropriate).

Hope you recover soon.

Beveren · 27/11/2019 17:35

If anything a sprain is more painful than a fracture, because ligaments take an awfully long time to heal whereas, once a broken bone is back in place and any swelling has died down, it tends to be pain-free provided you don't do anything stupid with it.

Ibelieveinwitches · 27/11/2019 17:57

Thanks. I've been hopping in the house and using crutches whilst out. They are bloody hard work I'm exhausted lol.

So sorry to hear that, OP, although I'm not surprised.
I hope it doesn't take a zillion yrs to get better.
