To not want to go to A & E but I can't put weight on my leg!

Ibelieveinwitches · 25/11/2019 16:36

I brisk walk twice a day including a short jog too once. I've being doing this for months with no issue.
Today whilst walking normally, coming out of a shop, my ankle kind of went from underneath me. It initially felt like something needed to click back into place. I hobbled a bit and it kept happening until I couldn't weight bare at all. I had to hop back to the car where fortunately I wasn't driving. It hurts whilst resting from my Achilles tendon right up my calf. I literally cannot stand on it for more than a split second. What am I supposed to do?! I can't keep hopping!! Is A & E the only place I can get crutches?

You need to go to minor injuries or A&E.

BusterTheBulldog · 25/11/2019 16:37

Try minor injuries instead

PotteringAlong · 25/11/2019 16:38

I would go to A&E so you can have an x-Ray and check it’s not broken.

Pollaidh · 25/11/2019 16:39

I think you need to go to A&E. Have you got circulation in your foot - is the colour normal, if you press the skin and release does the blood return quickly, is it as warm as the rest of your body, can you wiggle your toes? If you answered 'no' to any of these you definitely need to go to A&E.

It could be a number of things - tendons or ligaments, dislocation or subluxation, even a small fracture. If you can't put weight on it I expect they'll want to x-ray, and even if you see your GP he is likely to send you in for an x-ray.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 25/11/2019 16:40

If you have torn ligaments badly you might still need a cast/boot so get it checked out.

LaMarschallin · 25/11/2019 16:41

You really should go to A&E; you might have ruptured your Achilles tendon.
A&E's an awful bore, I know.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 25/11/2019 16:43

You may have damaged your ligament so you definitely need to go to A&E. Sorry. Take a book!

Ibelieveinwitches · 25/11/2019 16:48

I've got circulation in my foot yes. Getting a few shooting pains up the front of my shin now but I can get those at times hence why I don't jog for a prolonged time.
The thing I dont get is after walking/jogging this morning if I had badly damaged something why would it not present then? I've been absolutely fine since until 6 hours later! I can partially weight gain if I force myself but then it goes again and I can't stand on it.

Why would you not want to go and have it checked out? Just go to your nearest place to have it X-rayed. What is four hours of waiting compared to potentially lifelong problems because of a lack of treatment?

Aquamarine1029 · 25/11/2019 16:53

Stop being silly and get yourself to A&E. Why be so foolish as to risk permanent damage?

Purpleartichoke · 25/11/2019 16:55

You may need more than crutches. Seek medical attention.

LaMarschallin · 25/11/2019 16:59

Probably the sort of thing you should ask at A&E.
It's unlikely somebody could diagnose you via a message board.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 25/11/2019 16:59

If you don’t get it checked and there is a problem that needed treatment or immobilisation you could do permanent unfixable damage.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 25/11/2019 17:02

If you have an issue like a tendon or ligament wearing they can gradually get weaker until they snap. There is no telling when it is going to snap until it does.

stripeypillowcase · 25/11/2019 17:02

minor injuries (if they x-ray anything more than wrists) or a&e.
sounds like a snapped tendon from your description. but a dr would need to see it to diagnose.

have you taken ciprofloxacin or similar antibiotics?

Ibelieveinwitches · 25/11/2019 17:02

I dont want to waste their time. I'm hoping it might be ok by the morning? Maybe it will be quieter then! There's no minor injuries unit near to me but the hospital is closer.

You don't need A & E but you do need to go to minor injuries. They are probably closed now but I would go first thing tomorrow.

stripeypillowcase · 25/11/2019 17:04

a&e is always busy.
you won't waste their time.

take a book, phone&powerbank/charger and a snack.
good luck.

Hi! Im an A+E nurse. If it happened this morning and you still cant put weight on it then somethings wrong. May not be a broken bone but badly torn ligaments or tendons are treated the same as broken bones. Defo go to either a minor injuries unit or A+E. We see things like this all the time, thats what the service is there for.

An example of what it is not there for is are people coming to 'see what their blood pressure is' (genuinely happened the other day).

Chefwifelife · 25/11/2019 17:09

@Ibelieveinwitches is there any bruising or swelling? Where is your pain? I don't particularly think you need a&e unless concerned about a DVT. I would wait for the morning for Minor injuries.

campion · 25/11/2019 17:10

How is it wasting their time when you've obviously hurt yourself and are in pain? That's why they're there.
It may be better in the morning or it may be worse. No one on here can tell you that but those people at the hospital can!

Nacreous · 25/11/2019 17:10

You clearly need to go to a and e or a minor injuries unit with an x-ray. They will be able to a) assess if it's a broken bone or a snapped ligament or a strain or sprain b) provide crutches if required

I had "just" a sprain which I ignored for a good 24 hours before concluding it wasn't magically fixing itself. Got a lift to a and e - confirmed yes just a sprain but needed crutches for 6 weeks as it was a bad one.

In fact I ended up damaging my other knee as well because I had hurt that in my crash as well, but because it was less badly injured I was putting all my weight through it. Not worth risking it.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 25/11/2019 17:13

You don't need A & E but you do need to go to minor injuries How do you know?Confused

Get it seen OP

Aragog · 25/11/2019 17:16

You don't need A & E but you do need to go to minor injuries.

Not everywhere has a minor injuries department.
Not all minor injury departments have x ray machines.

OP says there is no local minor injuries, therefore she needs to go to A&E. It is what it is there for - accidents and emergencies. This is an accident, and leaving it could make the injury far worse.

Ibelieveinwitches · 25/11/2019 17:19

I walked/jogged fine this morning early on. The sudden pain started at about 2pm. I'm half stood on it now which makes me feel like a fraud for going. But I cant properly weight bare and when it goes I cant stand on it at all!
