To not want to go to A & E but I can't put weight on my leg!

Ibelieveinwitches · 25/11/2019 16:36

I brisk walk twice a day including a short jog too once. I've being doing this for months with no issue.
Today whilst walking normally, coming out of a shop, my ankle kind of went from underneath me. It initially felt like something needed to click back into place. I hobbled a bit and it kept happening until I couldn't weight bare at all. I had to hop back to the car where fortunately I wasn't driving. It hurts whilst resting from my Achilles tendon right up my calf. I literally cannot stand on it for more than a split second. What am I supposed to do?! I can't keep hopping!! Is A & E the only place I can get crutches?

@OytheBumbler I just Googled and you're right. Always good to learn.
Any news OP?

PassTheSaltCarol · 26/11/2019 08:47

I don’t hate you Oy.

Can’t believe you haven’t gone yet OP you banana. Will be interested to hear your update after all the theories on what it might be on this thread!

Booboostwo · 26/11/2019 08:49

I hope you are in A&E OP. The worsening nature of your symptoms suggests nerve involvement and you don't want to mess around with this. You could be left with permanent nerve damage.

Ibelieveinwitches · 26/11/2019 09:00

So after a load of googling it says it's not appropriate to go to hospital with a minor sprain which I think that's what it is. For the first 2 days I should treat at home. If I had actually done the injury whilst brisk walking or jogging I would get it. But I didn't. It was fine until 6 hours later when it suddenly hurt. But now it's not that bad

See your GP.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 26/11/2019 09:06

Please go and see someone even if it is just your GP. If it was a minor sprain your symptoms wouldn’t have been so severe. DS1 is a fit rugby player and even though he could walk on his minor sprain he still needed strapping and physio for a couple of weeks.

Biggobyboo · 26/11/2019 09:10

OP can you please just see somebody and put us all out of our misery.

Trewser · 26/11/2019 09:13

Ibelieveinwitches

I turned my foot over when walking a few years ago. It was very painful but it wasn't until I got a physio friend to do some ultrasound on it, and i hit the ceiling, that i went to a and e. Broken in 3 places.

Ibelieveinwitches · 26/11/2019 09:18

I do hear what you're all saying and I'm honestly not trying to be argumentative but it's not that bad now (maybe cos I'm just sat down lol). When I read the nhs info and it says dont go I feel really stupid to go as I dont want to waste their time or mine!!

Just go and get it seen , it will be much more difficult to treat further along the line if there is any damage . At our main hospital they have a majors and minors so someone with a sprain/ break etc is not competing with chest pains.

TheMidasTouch · 26/11/2019 09:20

The tingliness is a worry. My DB experienced a problem earlier this year where he fell over as his leg gave way and couldn't bear his weight and he had tingling and a degree of numbnes. He was just going to rest it. I persuaded him to call 111 and he ended up having emergency surgery to save his leg. The Consultant said if he hadn't have presented at hospital when he did, he would guarantee he'd have been having his leg amputated within 3 days.

Do you have other problems like Diabetes or Peripheral Neuropathy? If so, get yourself to A&E or to emergency GP appointment this morning.

EBearhug · 26/11/2019 09:21

If you can't put weight on it, it's not a minor sprain. It can be difficult to tell the difference between a major sprain and a break without an x-ray. Which means you should get it looked at.

Slumberly · 26/11/2019 09:24

Ffs go and get it looked at

Biggobyboo · 26/11/2019 09:25

It’s not the 19th century OP and the NHS is free at the point of use. You don’t have to suffer or have long term problems when you can just go to A&E.

MaryEli · 26/11/2019 09:28

You've already wasted a considerable amount of your own time, OP. You won't be wasting theirs. It's what they are there for. You will be triaged and may be seen quite quickly. I sprained my foot very badly 10 days ago. Got to A&E at 7pm. The waiting room was packed but Minor Injuries were not that busy. I saw nurse within an hour, got wheeled straight to x-ray which took no time at all and then saw another nurse 10 minutes after that. All done and dusted within 2 hours on a busy Friday night. NHS staff are highly competent and will give you the advice, treatment, medication and equipment you need and will put your mind at ease. Do yourself a favour and go to A&E rather than sitting at home trying to self-diagnose.

PollyShelby · 26/11/2019 09:28

Just go. You'll end up there eventually and if you wait an extra day or two god knows what extra damage you could be doing.

Makinganewthinghappen · 26/11/2019 09:30

My brother in law fell while walking a few months ago - he refused to go to a and e even though he couldn’t put weight on his leg.
A week later he decided to go to his gp who obviously couldn’t do anything about it and sent him to the hospital. Turns out he has seriously damaged his knee and because of the delay in seeking medical
Attention the injury is much worse that it needed to be - the limp he now has is likely to be permanent.

Moral of this: please go and get it seen.!

Caramel78 · 26/11/2019 09:31

Phone 111 and let them decide if you need to go to a&e, minor injuries or see your GP. You clearly need to see one of them though. Something could have dislocated or you could have nerve damage

IWorkAtTheCheesecakeFactory · 26/11/2019 09:31

Christ stop being such a frigging martyr. Hmm

TildaKauskumholm · 26/11/2019 09:35

Why on earth would you not go, seems you have the use of a car and someone to drive. Don't wait any longer!

Guessmydog · 26/11/2019 09:40

If you heard/felt a pop then it definitely sounds like you've ruptured your Achilles tendon at the least. The pain up the back of the calf and inability to bear weight is because of this. Can you stand on your tip toes/point your toes? Either always you need to go get seen, if it has snapped fully you could need surgery to reattach the tendon. Just so you know, i damaged mine last year, didn't hear a pop and wasn't as severe as yours sounds, i didn't get seen as i thought it was just sprained. Did nothing i could think of for it to hurt so wasn't too worried. I couldn't walk properly for 6 months, definitely couldn't run, couldn't go down stairs or uneven ground, it's only recently healed after i finally did physiotherapy for it (still feel it if i walk too much). I know you might not fancy the wait but it could be so much worse if you leave it.

AFairlyHardAvocado · 26/11/2019 09:44

I'm just unsure as to what the hospital can or will do.

That's why doctors and nurses have their jobs and we don't, it's their training and expertise that allows them to be sure what they can or will do. That's kind of the point!

Disco3000 · 26/11/2019 09:45

Find your nearest NHS walk in clinic.

RoseyOldCrow · 26/11/2019 09:45

You posted here asking for advice. The advice is to go to a medical professional, sooner rather than later.
If you had gone at the beginning of this thread, by now you'd either be back home feeling a bit embarrassed hut relieved at having no major problem - or have had a diagnosis & received the treatment you need.
Either is better than where you are!
So how much longer are you going to wait at home before you wait at A&E?
💐

AFairlyHardAvocado · 26/11/2019 09:47

I don't get why the huge resistance to going? If you go and there's nothing they can do then the worst that's happened is you "waste" a few hours there.
