To not want to go to A & E but I can't put weight on my leg!

Ibelieveinwitches · 25/11/2019 16:36

I brisk walk twice a day including a short jog too once. I've being doing this for months with no issue.
Today whilst walking normally, coming out of a shop, my ankle kind of went from underneath me. It initially felt like something needed to click back into place. I hobbled a bit and it kept happening until I couldn't weight bare at all. I had to hop back to the car where fortunately I wasn't driving. It hurts whilst resting from my Achilles tendon right up my calf. I literally cannot stand on it for more than a split second. What am I supposed to do?! I can't keep hopping!! Is A & E the only place I can get crutches?

Agree with others, this is more than a minor sprain and needs to be assessed sooner than later. If the advice then is, rest and wait for it to get better, you will not have wasted anyone's time having more serious issues ruled out early enough for them to be treated if necessary!
Please go to a&e today.

Peggyflo · 26/11/2019 09:49

I would just go and get this nipped in the bud asap.

Ive had the shooting pains, i ignored them as they werent a big deal at the time i started getting them, then they got worse. Was diagnosed with sciatica due to wear and tear and ignoring the light pains when they initially started

So i wouldnt like to think what ignoring the severe pains could do Shock

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 26/11/2019 09:49

Ffs go to a&e! If your achillies is ruptured it needs immediate treatment.

KidLorneRoll · 26/11/2019 09:49

There is no point going to a GP, all they will do is have a bit of a feel and send you to hospital.

If you can't put weight on it still, or you are experiencing numbness/tingling then something is not right. Worst comes to the worst they'll x-ray it, check that it's ok, immobilise it properly and give you a management plan. Just go and stop faffing about.

GrapefruitGin · 26/11/2019 09:52

Reading this is a little bit frustrating OP! I know someone who suffered something very similar, left it as they wanted to see if it would improve, ended up with an result much worse than if they had gone to hospital straight away, couldn’t work, couldn’t look after their family, turned to alcoholism. So reading this is v.frustraing. Either go to a&e or delete this thread as you obviously don’t need/want advice.

champagneandfromage50 · 26/11/2019 09:52

How foolish. With anything relating to limbs you will need an X-ray. I take all my DC if they have been injured and everytime I have they have had a fracture or break. My DD wrist was nearly missed as it was so difficult to see on X-ray and they said the type of fracture was dangerous as it can cut off the blood supply to the wrist. You seem more concerned about waiting to be seen than you are about your injury. You also seem to have decided that you can diagnose yourself. Got to your GP and get them to request an X-ray, that allows you to avoid waiting in a and e.

TiddyTid · 26/11/2019 09:54

At least ring 111 then.

LolaSmiles · 26/11/2019 09:59

Personally I think you should have got it checked out based on your opening post.

I've had some really nasty sprains and they weren't like that.

There's a danger that the pain subsidies but the damage is done or it starts to heal in an awkward way. Call 111 for advice and explain the whole thing properly, without downplaying initial symptoms.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 26/11/2019 10:09

This is incredibly frustrating reading.

Just go to A&E, like a responsible grown up, and let the medical professionals do what they're trained for.

Savingshoes · 26/11/2019 10:12

Just stay home where there's no medical professionals, no scanning machines and no crutches.
Maybe it will improve within a few months?

Papergirl1968 · 26/11/2019 10:26

Look, I’m taking my kitten to the vet today because I’m not sure if she’s got a UTI or is just in season. I’m going to feel an idiot if she’s just in season. But the point is, I’m not a vet and I’d rather take no chances with her health.
Slightly different I know as we have an appointment that will cost me a small fortune but better to be safe than sorry!
If this was your child would you take them to a&e? If it was your cat or dog that was limping would you book them a vet appointment?
Just get to a&e!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 26/11/2019 10:28

I'm just unsure as to what the hospital can or will do

There's a 101 things a medical professional can do depending on diagnosis- which you won't know until you seek help.

I disagree about a GP just having a feel and sending you to hospital, depending on what it is they might suggest something completely different.

AJPTaylor · 26/11/2019 10:30

You sound like my dear parents in law. Do what you like.

poorstudent1010 · 26/11/2019 10:33

I also think your attitude is peculiar OP. Unless you have grossly exaggerated the situation in your previous posts, it doesn’t make sense for you to not get it checked by a doctor. You can just about move your foot in a circle - your leg clearly hasn’t returned to normal even though it wasn’t involved in an injured to begin with.

It’s like you think that the worst case scenario is “feeling embarrassed for wasting NHS time” or a “long 4 hour wait time”, which is preventing you from going to A&E. In fact that’s the best case scenario - the worst case scenario would be that you have injured your leg and are causing further problems by not seeking medical advice and treatment, as other posters have described in better detail.

As a parent, you have the responsibility to care for your children. How can you do that when you deliberately avoid seeking medical care to the point that you can’t even walk?

Ibelieveinwitches · 26/11/2019 11:23

The tingling and shooting pains have gone completely. I am still limping but compared to last night it's a whole lot improved. The wait time at A&E is currently 6.5 hours!! O do not have that time to wait.

OP posts:
MustardScreams · 26/11/2019 11:24

Just fucking go!!! You are honestly the most annoying poster I’ve ever seen. You’re being completely ridiculous.

Trewser · 26/11/2019 11:24

Ok crack on!

Caramel78 · 26/11/2019 11:27

No point responding to her as she clearly isn’t going to go even if her leg starts to turn black and falls off.
OP - if you are going to flat out refuse to even book an appointment with your GP then at the very least you need to completely rest the leg and not do any exercise like running for a while or your Achilles’ tendon will probably completely snap

IWorkAtTheCheesecakeFactory · 26/11/2019 11:29

Ok could you do us all a favour and have your thread deleted please?

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 26/11/2019 11:30

Really not sure what the point of this post is?

AFairlyHardAvocado · 26/11/2019 11:33

@Ibelieveinwitches if this is real then your behaviour is very peculiar.

I don't "have" 6.5 hours to waste after my seizures most weeks but I have to go to hospital afterwards because the repercussions of potential injury / further damage are worse than "wasting" 6.5 hours of time.

We are so lucky to have care at the point of need in this country, 6.5 hours of time is nothing compared to what people elsewhere go through for medical care.

You know what... I think maybe you're absolutely fine after all!

AnotherQuirkyUsername · 26/11/2019 11:35

This thread is infuriating. Have it deleted and go about your life until your leg falls off.

Why ask "what am I supposed to do?" Knowing full well what you are going to do and continue to ignore all the advice you've been given?

breakfastpizza · 26/11/2019 11:38

Call 111. They'll do an informal triage and advise you which service to attend.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 26/11/2019 11:43

Just promise me that if you start to develop chronic problems with your ankle because you refused to get it checked and strapped or immobilised you won’t start a thread complaining about it.

acatcalledjohn · 26/11/2019 12:16

FFS. How long did you google for to get the answer you want?

Wilful ignorance isn't something to be proud of.
