To not want to go to A & E but I can't put weight on my leg!

Ibelieveinwitches · 25/11/2019 16:36

I brisk walk twice a day including a short jog too once. I've being doing this for months with no issue.
Today whilst walking normally, coming out of a shop, my ankle kind of went from underneath me. It initially felt like something needed to click back into place. I hobbled a bit and it kept happening until I couldn't weight bare at all. I had to hop back to the car where fortunately I wasn't driving. It hurts whilst resting from my Achilles tendon right up my calf. I literally cannot stand on it for more than a split second. What am I supposed to do?! I can't keep hopping!! Is A & E the only place I can get crutches?

I am going to assume you a troll. I am not aware of any website that tells you waiting times in a and e. Every response to a post is just more goady stupidity.

GrapefruitGin · 26/11/2019 12:27

OP is a troll, created this thread to annoy us all. It’s worked. Now do us a favour and have your thread deleted.

IWillWearTheGreenWillow · 26/11/2019 12:31

Waiting times are surely affected by triage?.

If I may offer anecdata. 20 years ago, I fell off my foot. Very painful, it swelled, I strapped it up, limped for a bit, took painkillers. I've not had full rotation in it since, and it's a Weather Ankle - aches in the damp.

I took up aerobic exercise after my youngest was born. Thought Id jiggered the same ankle not landing quite right. Walked on it for 3 weeks with pain going up my leg and unable to weight bear properly because I thought it was just a sprain. GP diagnosed a shin splint (?).

Eventually got an xray because I wasn't responding to physio for my "sprain". Xray showed a heel fracture that time, and an old improperly healed ankle break from 20 years ago. I still can't run without pain.

Get it looked at.

IWorkAtTheCheesecakeFactory · 26/11/2019 12:44

Just promise me that if you start to develop chronic problems with your ankle because you refused to get it checked and strapped or immobilised you won’t start a thread complaining about it.

Or waste NHS resources to manage it. Can’t have you wasting hospital time OP! Wink

Ibelieveinwitches · 26/11/2019 12:44

I don't have bruising or swelling and am only now limping a bit. I'm not a troll and don't quite know why some people are so irate. I posted last night as things were alot worse then. Maybe the wait time is so long as half people there shouldn't have been.

It doesn't say "only" go to A&E if you have those symptoms.

You've got a whole thread of people who don't need to google to tell you benchmarks that indicate a limb may be broken or ligaments may be snapped and that it needs looking at. Maybe listen to them?

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 26/11/2019 12:53

If you'd gone to A&E last night, you've have been diagnosed, treated and home hours ago.

Stop waffling on MN. Either go to A&E or don't. But don't ask for advice, then complete ignore it. Then keep going on about having a sore leg.

That's why people are getting infuriated!

Damntheman · 26/11/2019 12:54

You may feel that you don't have 6.5 hours to wait to be seen right now OP, but I can assure you that you'd surely rather waste 7 hours at A&E than suffer permanent damage to your leg. Permanent damage is a very real possibility in these kinds of situations. I have far more experience with this than I'd like.

I walked on a broken foot for over a month before the doctor finally sent me for an x ray as a last ditch effort because it wasn't "that bad" and I felt I could manage the pain. The bone was an absolute mess.

Don't be a tit. I promise you'll regret it for the rest of your life when your leg never heals right.

IfWishesWereFishes · 26/11/2019 13:00

Why don't you understand the concept of triage??

Not everyone waits the maximum time. That's the longest possible time for the healthiest person who is sitting there.

Take a book and a drink and just settle down for a bit of a wait.

Honestly, the drama over A&E visits on this board sometimes. Days of dithering.

isabellerossignol · 26/11/2019 13:05

There is a huge difference between turning up with something with worrying symptoms that turns out to be nothing much, and turning up at A&E with symptoms that are not concerning in the first place.

All those people who end up in A&E with crippling and debilitating headaches that turn out to be migraines haven't actually wasted A&E time because only a doctor could find out if it's a migraine and not a brain haemorrhage. And whilst most of them will be sent home reassured, a small minority will be rushed off to intensive care.

On the other hand if they turn up because they've had the cold all week and their head aches a bit when they cough, then of course there was no need to he there because that's a symptom of having a cold.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 26/11/2019 13:06

Well, you should have go e when the wait was 4 hours. It was never going to get shorter than that, was it.
Call you GP practice and ask for a phone consultation. At least we can do that at ours.

managedmis · 26/11/2019 13:09

You're not the decisive type, are you?

AFairlyHardAvocado · 26/11/2019 13:11

Cool, don't go then.

It's very obviously going to annoy people more if you keep posting updates saying you aren't going to go despite people encouraging you to do so.

If you can walk after all then maybe walk away from the thread...

AFistfulofDolores1 · 26/11/2019 13:12

OP, whether you're aware of it or not, you are getting something out of your behaviour here. You've posted; the feedback is close to unanimous; you resist. So, honestly, why post if your motive is transparent?

IWorkAtTheCheesecakeFactory · 26/11/2019 13:14

I don’t know why everyone is bothering themselves over OPs future foot damage. OP isn’t bothering herself to be concerned.

OP have you no-one in your house you could irritate with pointless foot updates instead of half the Internet?

MustardScreams · 26/11/2019 13:19

If you can walk after all then maybe walk away from the thread

😂😂😂

Yes please do this.

smoresmores · 26/11/2019 13:23

People talk a lot about how political parties have ruined the NHS but surely this is a huge factor in waiting times? There's no where to go besides A&E for injuries of this kind, in many places around the UK. People use it for access to the facilities like X-ray.

Although I would think an emergency GP appointment would be more appropriate for the OP, given they are happy to argue on MN, not seek help and are more concerned with the waiting times and being bored. It doesn't sound like an accident or emergency. I'm sure if you tell the out of hours GP about the tingling and they examine you they can advise and send you to hospital if needed.

I think these 'should I go to a&e' threads are one of the most annoying kinds. If you're genuinely seriously ill get off the internet and onto someone who can help. Seeking advice from strangers on a message board is pointless.

Beveren · 26/11/2019 13:28

If it came on suddenly out of the blue, it's not a sprain.

Do you have a minor injuries unit in your area?

BusterTheBulldog · 26/11/2019 13:33

I’ve read more of your updates, I had this after completing 20mike race this year, fine running then later that day, couldn’t weight bear, intermittent shooting pains etc. It was trapped nerve / sciatica. Loads of physio, acupuncture sorted it out, but took months. Try a physio, if you phone and tell them situation they may well fit you in today.

Jaxhog · 26/11/2019 13:33

If you don't want to go to A&E or MI, make an appointment with your GP. If it gets better in the meantime, you can always cancel it.

Otherwise keep it raised and use ice at least twice a day.

Shannith · 26/11/2019 13:33

Do not go to A&E under any circumstances.

You are being a loyal and stoic citizen and protecting the NHS from time waters.

It's people like you that made this country great.

Ignore the handwringing vipers. They'll have you calling an ambulance for a sore throat next.

Kudos to you OP.

There, is that what you wanted to hear?

Jaxhog · 26/11/2019 13:38

Btw, I slipped over on the ice earlier this year and assumed I'd just twisted my wrist. I made a GP's appointment to be on the safe side, which they fast-tracked when I told them the details. GP sent me to MI, where they confirmed it was broken and the ligament was torn.

Schuyler · 26/11/2019 13:43

” There's no where to go besides A&E for injuries of this kind, in many places around the UK. People use it for access to the facilities like X-ray. ”

I agree but the OP wouldn’t go anyway. Helpful for others though. As a kid, when we broke bones (I was clumsy) we’d pop to the walk in, get an x-ray and treatment, then fracture clinic at the big hospital within a day or two. Worked a treat.

Redglitter · 26/11/2019 14:11

Theres no point in giving the OP any more advice. She hasnt and never has had any intention of going to A&E. Let her continue to be a martyr
