To not want to go to A & E but I can't put weight on my leg!

Ibelieveinwitches · 25/11/2019 16:36

I brisk walk twice a day including a short jog too once. I've being doing this for months with no issue.
Today whilst walking normally, coming out of a shop, my ankle kind of went from underneath me. It initially felt like something needed to click back into place. I hobbled a bit and it kept happening until I couldn't weight bare at all. I had to hop back to the car where fortunately I wasn't driving. It hurts whilst resting from my Achilles tendon right up my calf. I literally cannot stand on it for more than a split second. What am I supposed to do?! I can't keep hopping!! Is A & E the only place I can get crutches?

I am not aware of any website that tells you waiting times in a and e.
My local hospitals post current waiting times on their website.

champagneandfromage50 · 26/11/2019 14:25

Pollywollydolly useful to know although TBH is I needed to go to a and e I would go.

AliceInStaines · 26/11/2019 14:35

I wouldn't go to A & E OP either . But I also wouldn't have posted about it on MN because they LOVE a good hospital type thread Grin

Sounds like a sprain to me. Rest it, ice it, elevate it and I'm sure you'll be fine. Try and switch off from the thread now as it's full of hysterical posters

Stupiddriver1 · 26/11/2019 14:49

For all those saying you wouldn't be able to hobble if something was broken I carried on running for 8 months with an undiagnosed broken leg (fibula). I actually ran 6k the evening before my orthopaedic appt where they put me in a plaster cast. I mean it hurt, but it was doable.

GrapefruitGin · 26/11/2019 16:09

@Shannith 😂😂😂

Mollychristmas · 26/11/2019 16:14

Good on you OP for not wasting the NHS’s time!

It’s unfortunate the side effect will probably be loosing your leg and maybe some sort of hideous infection that might very well end up killing you BUT kudos to you.

I do hope you will be just as stoic when you have done irreparable damage to your leg and are disabled for the remainder of your days (which may be numbered if the infection gets its way)

All positive stuff 👍

OpheIiaBaIIs · 26/11/2019 17:17

I did something similar a couple of years ago. Went over on my ankle one morning, immediate agony in my foot, unable to weight bear. RICEd it and hoped for the best. Next morning my leg was tingling and my foot was bruised to fuck. Still thought it was a bad sprain. The pain seemed to die down but I still couldn't stand on it. Eventually, 3 days after I did it, I gave in and went to minor injuries. I'd broken my foot in two places and needed surgery. It was made worse - and the recovery time was longer - because I hadn't gone earlier (was the weekend, the wait was 3 hours, etc).

A&E, OP.

EleanorReally · 26/11/2019 18:35

can you use ibugel, or whatever its called
dd sprained her ankle in high heels and that is what MIU advised

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 26/11/2019 18:41

You shouldn’t use ibuprofen gel on damaged tendons for at least 48 hours

Strawberrycreamsundae · 26/11/2019 18:43

No idea why you bothered to ask the question if you have no intention of following advice.
🙄😕
Better keep your fingers crossed that you haven't increased the damage by not getting expert attention and treatment.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 26/11/2019 18:45

Posted too soon
For 48 hours post injury

ActualHornist · 26/11/2019 18:49

What was the actual point of this thread?

Worst case scenario is that you do yourself permanent damage, not that the doctors roll their eyes at a sprain.

I think you’re being foolish.

lljkk · 26/11/2019 18:58

Glad you're feeling better, OP. x

There are loads of apps that can tell you wait times in specific A&E departments, only specific areas. I never knew until last night when this thread made me look in playstore. Sadly not avail. in my area.

Windygate · 26/11/2019 19:11

@ChazsBrilliantAttitude why is ibuprofen not allowed for the first 48 hours after a tendon injury?
Pharmacist told DS to avoid it last week after spraining his ankle but he didn't think to ask why.

stripeypillowcase · 26/11/2019 19:24

windy current research is that the initial inflammation after injury is beneficial for healing.

Biggobyboo · 26/11/2019 19:29

OP might have a fracture and shouldn’t be using NSAIDs.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 26/11/2019 19:39

As stripey says NSAID can slow down healing due to reducing inflammation. Similar questions are starting to be asked about using ice straightaway on an injury.

lljkk · 26/11/2019 19:51

I hope you're brave enough to update us in 4 weeks or so, OP. Hope it all continues to improve nicely.

acatcalledjohn · 26/11/2019 19:56

What was the actual point of this thread?

It feels a little like the FB posts where someone tags themselves at a hospital waiting for the sympathy "u ok hun" comments.

If you can walk after all then maybe walk away from the thread

Windygate · 26/11/2019 21:07

Thanks for the explanation re ibuprofen. DS did follow the advice.

EleanorReally · 26/11/2019 21:30

is that new advice about ibuprofen then? dd was specifically told to apply the gel after visiting MIU but it was 2018

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 26/11/2019 21:36

www.nhs.uk/conditions/sprains-and-strains/

“A pharmacist can help with sprains and strains

Speak to a pharmacist about the best treatment for you. They might suggest tablets, or a cream or gel you rub on the skin.

Painkillers like paracetamol will ease the pain and ibuprofen will bring down swelling.

But you should not take ibuprofen for 48 hours after your injury as it may slow down healing.”

The NHS page is dated Jan 2018

MollyButton · 26/11/2019 21:44

My FIL slipped on ice, I'm pretty sure he was examined medically.
He then kept having "falls" and we were getting worried. Eventually after one they X-rayed him and discovered he'd broken his ankle. He had been walking on it for ages - but every now and then it would "give way".

In addition if it is just "soft tissue" then some physio could make a massive difference.

JiminyCricketIsOverForTheSeaon · 26/11/2019 22:37

This really was an annoying thread. OP, don’t ask us again.

OP: shall I go to A and E
Mnet: Yes
OP: I’m not going
Mnet: Go
OP: No
Mnet: long lasting damage etc, just get checked
OP: No

Hmm
ClientListQueen · 26/11/2019 22:44

My mum does this
Moans in pain With headache
"Take some painkillers"
"You know I don't like taking them"
"Well STFU then" Hmm
She would rather sit crying than take paracetamol ConfusedConfusedConfused

I danced, waitressed, went out clubbing, everything for a week on my ankle. Even a&e said it wasn't broken but they would x ray anyway. I went to tell the doctor I was just going to move my car and he said "you aren't going anywhere on that until it's in a cast"
I ended up in plaster for 8 weeks none weight bearing with breaks to my foot and ankle. Had no swelling, no bruising and no injury. Just got out of bed and it hurt
