Saving seats in train

managedmis · 25/11/2019 12:13

Every morning a woman on my train saves her mate a seat. Every morning the train is rammed and loads of people ask her to move her bag but she refuses and saves she saving it for her pal, who eventually shows up. People end up standing, the seat free, then pal arrives. I've seen a couple of people ignore her, move the bag and plump down in the seat, the entire train almost cheered.

What's the protocol here?

I'll tell dh he's deplorable then. Thanks for letting me know

FirstTicket · 27/11/2019 14:54

Madein1995 Is being perfectly reasonable.

Why on EARTH Likethebattle would you want to sit next to someone on an empty train Confused

I have mental health disabilities and if someone moved my bag to sit next to me on a carriage less than half full I would have the mother of all panic attacks. I too will always get up and move for someone else and will always move my bag when seats are needed but to chose to sit next to someone with a bag on their seat? Hmm

I’d genuinely instantly make you get up again so I could move to another double empty seat.

FirstTicket · 27/11/2019 14:56

Person: “Can you move your bag so I can sit down?”

Me: “Yeah sure” ...Takes bag whilst getting up and moving far, far, far away

ddl1 · 27/11/2019 14:56

Could the friend have some disability which means they need a seat?

Devereux1 · 27/11/2019 14:57

@dingit I think it was illegal to marry 12 year olds, which is presumably how old you both are to find that funny?

GiveHerHellFromUs · 27/11/2019 15:00

*thought not think ffs

dingit · 27/11/2019 15:02

You've lost me dear

'My Dh gets on packed city train each day. Once a bloke with expensive bike barged his way on train, gauging a few shins with said bike, and left it to sit further down carriage. The huge bloke next to dh picked up bike and put it out at next station. When he got off he tapped Bargy bloke on shoulder and told him what station his bike had got off at' 😂

While it was inconsiderate of the bike owner, the 'huge bloke's behaviour borders on plain theft, and could also have caused a lot of trouble and excess work for staff at the station, who have to deal with unattended property. The 'huge bloke' and others including your dh could have complained first to the bike owner, and if that didn't work, to train staff: it would have caused a lot less trouble than dumping a bike.

Witchofzog · 27/11/2019 15:05

@Havaina I have already claimed big burly bloke. You can have Bargy Bloke though if you want Grin

Havaina · 27/11/2019 15:05

I think @dingit is getting a hard time. She’s not the one who dumped the bike.

None of us know how bad Bargy Bloke was so can’t really comment.

And if anyone banged me on the shin I would scream ‘ow’ at them.

Havaina · 27/11/2019 15:07

@Witchofzog

Haha everyone seems to hate Bargy Bloke, I think he’s just misunderstood Grin

Havaina · 27/11/2019 15:08

Oh sorry I meant Bargy Bloke’s nemesis was misunderstood ... can’t keep up Grin

dingit · 27/11/2019 15:14

I've only related what he told me, although he tells a better story than me. It's not something he would do, and I think the deed was done in seconds, so not a lot he could do.
I'd have been too scared to do or say anything. I'd hate a packed commuter train. Perhaps next time he will follow the rules. There's a reason bikes are banned. Dh pays £2k to stand on a train each day, you don't want to be walloped by a dick with a bike too.

Winesalot · 27/11/2019 15:18

Actually to be fair, Madein did not specify just when she would judge carriage to be busy enough to take her bag of the seat. She did not say if there were no double empty seats left, just if there were empty seats left. That could go both ways and could explain peoples reactions. Or I could have missed where she specified in which case, apologies.

So yes, if there are no double empty seats left on the carriage, she is being unreasonable if she expects to keep the seat beside her free for her convenience because she likes to access her bag and put her coat somewhere. Just like those whose sit on the aisle seat beside an empty window seat on the bus.

And I have a degree of social anxiety too so it is just as uncomfortable for me to a) ask you to move your stuff and b) sit beside you.

Devereux1 · 27/11/2019 15:24

@dingit

If the man with the expensive bike did push onto a crowded train during a time when they are not allowed, then surely your DH, the Big Bloke and all the others who were physically assaulted by him and his bike could have politely but firmly blocked his entrance onto the packed carriage, explaining why he's not coming on.

In a similar way that I see Tube passengers all the time resist some idiot who decides to throw themselves at whoever is packed like a sardine up against the door when it opens at a stop. People push back and say No, we're full, you're not coming on. Or expletives to that effect.

To allow the owner to come on, to allow him to go and find a seat (if there were spare seats, why was it a packed carriage and why weren't any of the standing wounded sitting down then?), and then remove his bike and only tell him when the train had departed, is downright nasty.

dingit · 27/11/2019 15:33

Devereux, no idea as I said I wasn't there. You seem to have a very vested interest in trying to pick me to pieces? Do you know me in real life?
Mn is a strange place at times..

I was responding to your latest post. You posted another follow up post now calling the man with the bike a "dick", I responded.

That's what tends to happens on forums. It's called replying. No, I don't think I know you in real life. Are you ok? Confused

RandomWok · 27/11/2019 15:47

Wow this thread is really brining out the best in people!

RandomWok · 27/11/2019 15:48

Bringing... 👍

ScreamingValenta · 27/11/2019 16:44

Some of the behaviours described on this thread are over the top.

Dumping someone's bike off the train without telling them? That crosses the line into unreasonable behaviour.

And I'm not sure why anyone would get upset about a bag on a seat in a carriage that was less than half full, unless it was on a priority seat.

AlexaAmbidextra · 27/11/2019 16:53

Could the friend have some disability which means they need a seat?

Well that took longer than I expected. 😂. I seriously doubt it as I’m sure that if she had, her seat saving friend would make sure everyone knew.

theEnglishInPatient · 27/11/2019 17:11

if the friend does have disability, the the 1st woman is free to give up her own seat for her...

Likethebattle · 27/11/2019 17:20

Ah see if there are double seats then I dive into them but if there are only singles left then the first seat I will choose is the one with the bag as it shouldn’t be there. I got on a crowded service one morning and a woman was in a seat her bag in another and coat across a third. People were standing meekly by. ‘Excuse me is this your coat? Please move it!’ I also witnessed a couple sit down on seats and put bags on the two seats across from them!
