Saving seats in train

Every morning a woman on my train saves her mate a seat. Every morning the train is rammed and loads of people ask her to move her bag but she refuses and saves she saving it for her pal, who eventually shows up. People end up standing, the seat free, then pal arrives. I've seen a couple of people ignore her, move the bag and plump down in the seat, the entire train almost cheered.

What's the protocol here?

I'm in the moving the bag camp and would look carefully before sitting on top of one. A woman plonked herself on the seat next to mine once which had a Metro on it, and passively aggressively asked, "Oh, was that your paper?" It wasn't. Someone had put it there to cover up the remnants of their MacDonalds, which squidged out from under the paper and onto pass-agg woman's coat. I'd happily relocate the offending bag three rows away, though.

What's different with this woman is that she tells people : 'I'm saving for a friend'. Loads of folk have their bag on the seat next to them but then begrudgingly move it when someone wants to sit down.

I think I'll have a word with the guard

There's enough of an issue on our trains when you have reserved a seat! No separate commuter trains here only intercity but commuters seem to think they can sit on the seats I have bothered to reserve. I've had to get the conductor on multiple occasions, they are so rude

PlasticPatty · 25/11/2019 20:17

Had one of those the other day. Some very young woman telling me 'I'm sitting there', at a seat I'd reserved. She wasn't. I was.

SabineUndine · 25/11/2019 20:42

One I have used on buses is 'Excuse me, is your bag disabled? I am and I'd like to sit down please.' Especially good if they are taking up two prority seats.

Witchofzog · 25/11/2019 20:57

@PlasticPatty Why was she sitting there? Cheeky bint Confused The audacity of some people is astounding

SamBeckett · 25/11/2019 21:08

I probably wouldn't do it but I like the idea of this scenario.
Entitled mare puts bag on seat
Several other passengers ask her to move it
She says no its for my friend
Three or four passengers stand very close to the bag seat blocking it
Friend gets on train and tries to get to seat
Everyone says no you can not sit there it is reserved
And make her stand up all the way

Either do what everyone says and move bag/sit down or play the long game. Say hello to her one day and remark that you recognise her from previous journeys. Regularly start saying hello. After a few weeks idly ask good weekend? Carry on like that for another couple of weeks. Then ask one day if you can sit down, when she says it’s reserved for my friend say “but we are friends”, move the bag and sit down 😂

Mummytoonlychild · 26/11/2019 17:37

I would be a pain in the ass and sit next to her everytime the bag is on the seat and I wouldn't when it was not and wonder when she would get the hint lol

KaptenKrusty · 26/11/2019 17:46

Lolz - hate this ! Get a kick out of making them move! Was on the stansted express recently - so many people use the seats for luggage..a group of elderly people got on (3 couples) and they couldn't sit so I got up and offered my seat to one of them then I got up and said loudly could you please move your bag so these people can sit down - the face on them having to move was hilarious - I eventually got us all seats and annoyed a lot of entitled people in the process!

DanceItOut · 26/11/2019 18:05

I would point her out to a guard and make a point of saying once or twice you would just let it go but she is doing this regularly.

mondayfeels · 26/11/2019 18:06

Ask her if her bag paid for a ticket 🤣

Mummyof2OL · 26/11/2019 18:11

I don’t normally comment just read haha but anyway I work at a train station and I can tell you that she cannot ‘save a seat’ unless she and her friend have paid to sit in first class in which case she can save a seat. So no let her know the rules she cannot save a seat and if she really needs to save a seat for her friend every day then they best start paying for first class

OctoberLovers · 26/11/2019 18:15

Say "Can you please remove your bag from the seat, or i will"

I wouldn't be so polite !

fordk · 26/11/2019 18:15

its a problem on all trains people put their bags and coats on the seat near the window and sit in the seat next to them the train company should have a person walking through the train and tell people if they are holding a seat to move their coats and bags or leave the train at the next stop they are just selfish people

Lincolnfield · 26/11/2019 18:23

I’ve had this when I worked in London and commuted every day. I found that asking, loudly and very politely! ‘Excuse me, has that bag paid for a seat? You see I have - so SHIFT IT!’

Zoejj77 · 26/11/2019 18:35

I’ve seen people who’ve reserved seats (officially with ticket proof) who don’t get their seats never mind someone who decides to put her bag down. Enough already

pp12 · 26/11/2019 18:37

Sit on the bag. Or see if others on the train and sit on every seat before she gets on.

Blacksheep52 · 26/11/2019 19:23

Hand her the bag and sit down. Bums reserve seats, not bags.

ForalltheSaints · 26/11/2019 19:34

If the two people sit in the same seat on the same train every day, easy for them to be identified if you tell the train company.

Though I do like the seat blocking idea someone suggested!

Toomuchtrouble4me · 26/11/2019 20:00

ClaudiaWankleman

I sit on bags, hands, knees or anything else in the way of the ever elusive seat

No you dont

Angelil · 26/11/2019 20:06

Her bag didn't pay for a seat. Tell her to go jump.

Rainbowbrite11 · 26/11/2019 20:39

I was once on a very busy train with my lovely calm friendly border collie, no seats so I was stood up with my dog standing next to me after about 30 minutes I noticed the man next to us resting his briefcase on my dogs back I told him move it or I'll stick it where the sun doesn't shine. I was absolutely raging 😤 he moved away after that
