Fucking winter

AIBU or is it just shit for six months of the year from Oct to March? Kids perpetually ill. Grumpy husband who doesn't want to spend a dime and gets crap presents on the cheap which no-body likes. Cold and rain, no fucking money and bloody Christmas to get through with annoying relatives who you have to be polite to. Everyone at work seems to want to do even more as soon as the winter strikes, no-one's got any positive energy to do it. The constant cycle of D&V, heavy colds and tonsillitis, constantly surrounded by screaming children. IT SUCKS!!!!!! Can't go out anywhere cos one of the kids is ALWAYS vomiting. And the weather's absolutely SHITE. I think humans should just go into a state of hibernation for this part of the year. AIBU?

I think what you’re missing @Cheeseywish is that people really struggle with the lack of light around this time of year.

People don’t have a problem with rain or cold per se; it’s the gloom that a rainy day in November causes vs one in May.

Up here in Scotland it was “evening light” at 3.15 the other (dreich) day. Seeing as sunrise is getting nearer to 9am atm that’s hard.

There’s a reason folk have light boxes to treat SAD and - put bluntly - there’s a reason why the Nordic countries have (or has until very recently) a higher than average suicide rate.

You can snuggle on the sofa with as many Yankee Candles on the go as you like; there’s no substitute for natural light.

I detest winter .. it's miserable and dark and damp where I live .. I always feel better on 21 December though when the nights get lighter a teeny bit every day .. I have loads of energy in summer and get lots done when I get in from work .. but in winter I just want to go home and get into my pyjamas ... I'm not a big fan of October and November.

Peoplearemiserable · 26/11/2019 17:32

I love walking in the rain 🤷‍♀️ Good job really, living in England.

Alicatz66 · 26/11/2019 17:33

I have found my people !!! "Cosy" is the worst word ever

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 26/11/2019 17:40

I should also say as a runner (albeit an injured one) I can’t run in the same way in the dark than in the light, I turn from a happy, bouncing golden retriever to a trotting mountain goat, always having to look out for cracks, raised paving stones and slippy leaves, as well as the obvious considerations of being a woman running alone at night.

MarshaBradyo · 26/11/2019 17:43

I prefer cold to this middling temp so next week will be better for me. With running my best temp is 4 degrees. It’s through London though - well was when doing a running commute.

Ginfordinner · 26/11/2019 17:45

The crunchy mornings, the puffs of breath, even when it's raining, the trees are happy and reservoirs are being replenished

They are more than replenished. They are overflowing.

Looking up won’t help. I wear glasses, and when it rains I can’t see very well.

On the contrary, MN is full of whingeing threads in the summer

There are far more I hate summer threads on MN than winter hating threads. I accept that there are good reasons why some people dislike summer – health issues, hayfever, sunburn, but some of the excuses are just barmy. If it is too bright just put sunglasses on. Far too many people wear tight clothes and skinny jeans in summer then complain that they are hot. D’oh!

Cheeseywish I don’t enjoy any of those things you are waxing lyrical about. DD is a student so we don’t “do” Halloween, bonfire night, lead up to Christmas stuff. Christmas chez nous is rather dull and boring because there are only three of us, and new year is a non event as I have a deeply unsociable husband who never wants to do anything.

We had a fabulously hot summer - most of the time

But most of us didn’t Bluerussian, hence my earlier post referring to posters living in London. I’m in Yorkshire. We had a lovely Easter, a cold May and June, a hot weekend at the end of June, a warm (not hot) July, a hot weekend at the end of July, a cool August and a hot weekend at the end of August. And that was it. It might have been hotter for longer where you live, but not everywhere else.

You can snuggle on the sofa with as many Yankee Candles on the go as you like; there’s no substitute for natural light.

I agree. I don’t even like candles. They hurt my eyes.

MarshaBradyo · 26/11/2019 17:47

Doesn’t anyone like all the seasons? I mean summer is my favourite but one of the things I like about living here is the big difference between seasons.

Shockers · 26/11/2019 17:49

It’s really damp outside and my joints are playing up something chronic. To survive this weather without excruciating pain, I’d need to stay in a heated house all the time- there’s no fun in that Sad.

Ginfordinner · 26/11/2019 17:52

but one of the things I like about living here is the big difference between seasons.

We don't seem to get that any more these days. Today was 11 degrees and wet. We had wet days with similar temperatures in June this year.

If winter was less dank and damp I wouldn't mind it, but the constant gloom we have most of the time is very, very depressing.

MarshaBradyo · 26/11/2019 17:54

I agree as it’s the middling temp that is a bit meh. But next week is colder -1 and some sun tg

ShadowOnTheSun · 26/11/2019 18:01

Another winter hater here. Well to be fair, I love Christmas, but I'd be fully happy about celebrating it in the middle of July. As for the rest... Ugh.

I eat stews/soups during spring/summer too. And watch films. And 'snuggle' with my woollen blankets in the evenings, if it's chilly. Summer doesn't prevent me from doing any of these things. BUT I can also choose to go out and do things out, if I want to. Not like now. I do suffer from hay fever and my eczema gets worse in summer. I still prefer it over winter.

As for 'golden crispy leaves' and 'shiny stars in the bright wintry sky' and all that bullshit.. Yep, maybe somewhere in Switzerland or similar. I'm in Wales and it's like this:

Sunday: rain
Monday: rain
Tuesday: rain
Wednesday: rain
Thursday 8am - 10am dry, 10am - 1pm drizzle, the rest: rain
Friday: rain
Saturday: sunny bright and lovely. Just kidding. It's.. rain.

5.5 months in a row (the beginning of September is usually ok).

PineappleDanish · 26/11/2019 18:04

THE FORECAST FOR THE NEXT THREE DAYS IN GLASGOW IS DRY.

Must be a misprint on the website. Friday is apparently going to be sunny. So that's one day out of 7 when I might not have to use the lightbox.

Delatron · 26/11/2019 18:21

I would love it if we had proper seasons that were all equal in length and the weather was as it should be for each season.

Why don’t you summer haters ever admit that you get it good in this country? It has been cold since October, it snows more in March than December. April can be cold too. We did not get a hot summer this year. August was shit apart from the last week. It was warm for some of July. June was really crap. I’m in the south too. So 6 months of miserable weather versus about 3 weeks of hot weather. Not ‘seasons’ as such. I don’t mind a discussion and I know everyone is different but when people make shit up about the weather in this country it pisses me off.

MarshaBradyo · 26/11/2019 18:23

What’s the making shit up? I’m not a summer hater. Yes it’s better when there’s clear seasons and summer is hot.

I do actually feel for those in Scotland and Wales because whilst I can do this weather and welcome each season I am probably at my limit for it.

MarshaBradyo · 26/11/2019 18:27

Although I’d like to see one of those Scottish summer evenings where it’s light really late. Or further north even.

Delatron · 26/11/2019 18:28

The poster who claimed we had a hot summer! Not true.

MarshaBradyo · 26/11/2019 18:29

Oh right ok. Although that one two years ago was great. I missed the crazy hot day last year though.

LoonyLunaLoo · 26/11/2019 18:30

The sun was setting here at 3:30 😢😢😢 I cant cope with that!

LoonyLunaLoo · 26/11/2019 18:31

We’re north west and I can confirm that we did not have a nice summer.

Ginfordinner · 26/11/2019 18:34

Summer 2018 was fabulous. I want more of the same.

ChaiNashta · 26/11/2019 18:40

I kind of wilt in Summer (Asian but can't bear hot temperatures Confused) & suffer from hayfever so I prefer the Winter. Plus all those rustic, wholesome foods that simply taste the best in winter (I'm thinking soups, pies, stews, yum) and I see people wearing some really stylish coats & boots at this time of the year. The DCs love looking at all the fireworks, lights and when it snows.

Slumberly · 26/11/2019 18:41

I hope that all of you saying

  • it's what you make it!
  • it's all about a positive mindset!

will be going to say the same things on the mental health boards.

The poster who claimed we had a hot summer! Not true.
.....

It was boiling most of the time down in London. I was quite pleased to see a bit of rain at last but even then it wasn't cold.

aceyace · 26/11/2019 18:43

My small dd's haven't realised that the clocks changed and so their body clocks wake everyone up at 5am, it's so dark but up we all get..then bed at 5.30, I don't mind that bit....now they both have a cough, temperature and vomiting so not having a great month so far, not to mention the relentless rain and flooding
