Fucking winter

Blindspot82 · 25/11/2019 09:40

AIBU or is it just shit for six months of the year from Oct to March? Kids perpetually ill. Grumpy husband who doesn't want to spend a dime and gets crap presents on the cheap which no-body likes. Cold and rain, no fucking money and bloody Christmas to get through with annoying relatives who you have to be polite to. Everyone at work seems to want to do even more as soon as the winter strikes, no-one's got any positive energy to do it. The constant cycle of D&V, heavy colds and tonsillitis, constantly surrounded by screaming children. IT SUCKS!!!!!! Can't go out anywhere cos one of the kids is ALWAYS vomiting. And the weather's absolutely SHITE. I think humans should just go into a state of hibernation for this part of the year. AIBU?

Winter is the pits

SoupDragon · 25/11/2019 12:34

This autumn has been amazing imo

How? It's been wet and miserable for about 95% of the time.

thecatsthecats · 25/11/2019 12:36

I love proper winter - cold, crisp and bright.

Last year I missed a whole month of winter though, in the southern hemisphere, and this year it's hit me like a ton of bricks. It's so fricking miserable.

salsmum · 25/11/2019 12:44

I too hate winter and am always putting lights on to 'brighten' those dark days, I hate going out at this time of the year too and being a Carer for my Dd her joints and muscles cause her chronic, daily pain when the weather is cold and damp... I should have been a bear so I can hibernate and wake up in the spring so YADNBU.

Pinkypurple35 · 25/11/2019 12:47

I hear you, it’s rained non fucking stop here since September (north west), everything has been water logged for months, and summer was shit too. Its been barely light for a week.

Iwillbemrsminty · 25/11/2019 12:49

YNBU at all. Feel exactly the same. We're on the 4th ear infection since beginning of October this time with the added bonus of d & v 😩

bumblingbovine49 · 25/11/2019 13:12

I loathe winter too. I do get a bit hot in the summer sometimes but I never complain about the heat. I am always bewlidered by the plethora of negative weather threads in the summer . I love the long days of summer. It is the lack of light here in the winter that is a killer for me.

keepingbees · 25/11/2019 13:25

Yanbu. I hate it too. It's dark, damp, depressing and full of illness from the word go.
Everywhere I go people are hacking and coughing.
My DC's school has been circulating a horrible cough/cold virus that no one can shake off. Now some are starting with the dreaded D&V.
Christmas has lost all its meaning for me. I try for the sake of the DC but I hate what it's become. I hate for waste, the expensive, the forced time with family who don't bother with you the rest of the year.

Ginfordinner · 25/11/2019 13:59

Really hate all the nonsense too about cosy, hygge, snuggling under blankets and "hot choc". People who hate winter aren't complaining about cold. We're smart enough to work out to put the heating on, or wear socks and a jumper. Nothing anyone can do about the lack of daylight.

Oh, well said @PineappleDanish
The words “snuggling” and “cosy” make me feel claustrophobic. I want light, warm airy space. I don’t want to be smothered by heavy blankets, and hot chocolate is not my drink of choice.

I am always bewildered by the plethora of negative weather threads in the summer

I have a theory that the winter lovers/summer haters:

  1. Live in a stuffy flat in London with no outside space
  2. Don’t have children
  3. Can afford to heat their home comfortably in winter
  4. Own a tumble dryer
  5. Don’t live in an area prone to flooding
  6. Don’t live in an area that gets badly affected by snow
  7. Don’t drive to and from work in the dark in awful weather in winter

On the other hand, where I live:

  1. Hot summer days are as rare as hen’s teeth
  2. The weather is dull and grey more often than not
  3. We have had the wettest autumn weather ever (that is now official)
  4. I have had to use my tumble dryer a lot this year
  5. My winter commute is truly awful - not only because of the dark and the weather, but I have to drive past a large shopping mall so the increase in traffic between October and Christmas is horrific.
HoldMyLobster · 25/11/2019 14:07

I do like bright, crisp winter days though. Nothing quite like it when the sun is out and the snow is lovely. It's the ice I can't stand, like walking on a wet ice rink 24/7. Still, hopefully this winter will have more sunny days, less yoyo-ing of the temperature above and below zero (less ice that way) and better snow than last year. Then I'll enjoy it!

I'm in New England and it sounds like you must live somewhere near me. Last year was fecking awful wasn't it?

missyB1 · 25/11/2019 14:12

It’s been raining for a month here, if this carries on I’m going to cry. I can stand literally any other kind of weather but relentless rain just ruins everything.

MarshaBradyo · 25/11/2019 14:14

I love all seasons really but the drab grey middling 9 to 11 degrees is my least favourite. Also looking at iPhone weather and seeing the rain icon for weeks on end is a bit much.

LakieLady · 25/11/2019 14:16

Yabu! Winter doesn't start till 1st December. Wink

This Autumn has been total shite. The shortening days do my head in quite enough without them being so damp, dank and GLOOMY! A bright. crisp Autumn day can be lovely, if cold, but I feel as though the sun hasn't shone for months. And I'm sick of the constant bloody rain.

We've been illness-free, thankfully, but I'm still really pissed off.

Still, less than 4 weeks until the days start getting longer and spring will soon be on the way.

Damntheman · 25/11/2019 14:27

I'm in Norway @HoldMyLobster but we do seem to have the exact same shitty winter! Here's hoping to crisp sunny snow days this time ;)

EssentialHummus · 25/11/2019 14:34

Your DH needs his arse handed to him, but otherwise I see your point. I'm at home with a toddler; it's basically dark once she's up from her nap. Park is a moshpit. I try and see friends when they're about but otherwise it is tough going.

PineappleDanish · 25/11/2019 14:37

It's 2.37pm and I've had to switch the lights on.

That's not cosy. It's fucking depressing.

MarshaBradyo · 25/11/2019 14:38

I still do London parks, have to, but dd looks like she’s hazmated-up in full rain proof outfit and wellies

LoonyLunaLoo · 25/11/2019 15:05

I suffer from SAD so winter is genuinely depressing for me 😢 and since it lasts for 6-8 months of the year, I am depressed for over half my life! I feel like going to sleep at 5pm.

Yes to winter being so expensive too as it’s too cold for anything free.

And yes, we’ve tried to emigrate to Australia but they won’t have us due to my husband’s health condition 😡.

Jodie77 · 25/11/2019 15:22

I'd happily do away with February. It's a non month. Grey, miserable, no festivities. If I didn't have to worry about being fined And could afford it I'd take the whole month off and go somewhere hot.

PineappleDanish · 25/11/2019 15:30

See, I don't mind February. By then the light is coming back in a noticeable way. Snowdrops and crocuses start to appear again, you have that sense that Spring is within touching distance.

November on the other hand can fuck off. Everything's drying. It's grey, and just keeps getting darker and darker.

MarshaBradyo · 25/11/2019 15:36

Me too at least February has some change with early growth. January oth can feel very long though.

Ginfordinner · 25/11/2019 15:37

It's 2.37pm and I've had to switch the lights on.

I have had to have lights on all day.

ilovesooty · 25/11/2019 15:39

Yes so have I.

Shockers · 25/11/2019 15:47

I have arthritis, so the cold and damp really affects me. We went somewhere warm last December and January and it was bliss, but I can’t afford to do that this year.

Slumberly · 25/11/2019 17:33

*I have a theory that the winter lovers/summer haters:(

I'm sorry but I have to debunk your theory. I hate winter as much as anyone you could possibly imagine. I spend these dark, cold, drizzly months being genuinely angry & furious - with the universe, with myself for not emigrating to Spain many years ago, ESPECIALLY with anyone who says anything about 'cosy', 'snuggly', 'jumpers', 'crunchy leaves', 'woodsmoke', BLAH BLAH fucking Blah.

My ideal climate is one where I can go out wearing the minimal amount of decent clothing, bare arms, bare legs, bare head, be out and about.

BUT to debunk your theory:

I live in London. I don't drive. I don't in fact commute at all. I have children. I do not own a tumble dryer. I live in a house now, but until last year had always lived in flats. My area is not badly affected by snow or flooding.

And I STILL fucking hate winter, and anyone who likes it.

(Also Christmas is shit.)
