Fucking winter

Blindspot82 · 25/11/2019 09:40

AIBU or is it just shit for six months of the year from Oct to March? Kids perpetually ill. Grumpy husband who doesn't want to spend a dime and gets crap presents on the cheap which no-body likes. Cold and rain, no fucking money and bloody Christmas to get through with annoying relatives who you have to be polite to. Everyone at work seems to want to do even more as soon as the winter strikes, no-one's got any positive energy to do it. The constant cycle of D&V, heavy colds and tonsillitis, constantly surrounded by screaming children. IT SUCKS!!!!!! Can't go out anywhere cos one of the kids is ALWAYS vomiting. And the weather's absolutely SHITE. I think humans should just go into a state of hibernation for this part of the year. AIBU?

I agree about Christmas

Waitingforadulthood · 25/11/2019 19:24

I adore the winter. I used to hate summer but realised a few years ago that I will spend a QUARTER of my life in summer. To commit 25% of my life to being miserable and moaning about a season that I can not control isn't in my life plan. Of course you'll have preferences but, really every season has its positives, and living in Britain , it's probably for the best to try to learn to love the rain.

Delatron · 25/11/2019 19:31

It is really shit. And it does last a lot longer than our ‘summers’ so if you’re a hot weather lover it really is a struggle in this country. I was very ill last month with some awful virus that wouldn’t go away, yet had to keep getting up in the dark and working, just feeling horrendous.

I know we’re all different but I struggle to understand how people prefer these dark days (it doesn’t even seem to get light?) and pretty constant rain. I like a cold sunny day but they’re quite rare. But then I’m active, love being outdoors and hate sitting in under a blanket!!

Things that have helped me this year; my lumiere light alarm clock, vitamin D spray, getting out for a run at least 4 times a week (when not I’ll). Or just out for a walk. It’s bleak though.

It's not about the rain for most people. It's about the dark.

Ginandgingers92 · 25/11/2019 19:36

Don't forget the dry skin and sore nose from all tissues 😫😫😫😫😫
Bring on spring!!

MissCharleyP · 25/11/2019 19:43

Don’t have DC but, yes it’s fucking awful. I hate the relentless rain, damp, cloud and gloom. Last week we went up to the Lakes on Monday and it was bloody freezing but bright, frosty and just generally nicer; we could walk around the town, stop and look at shops and take pictures and we FELT like going out. If I didn’t have to go to work i wouldn’t leave the house.

Slumberly · 25/11/2019 19:51

@Waitingforadulthood Of course you'll have preferences but, really every season has its positives

No. You think this because you are one of those twisted people who thinks there is anything good about winter. It's not really a stretch for you to find the positives about summer, because it is obviously, objectively better. It's light. It's warm. It's mostly dry. The days are long and interesting and there is enough time to go and do stuff. You can just go for a walk.

Winter on the other hand is just objectively a massive pile of shit with absolutely no positives whatsoever. I suppose the positive is that I'm still alive to live through another one, but there are plenty of winter days where that doesn't feel like much of a positive either.

Slumberly · 25/11/2019 19:52

@PineappleDanish See, I don't mind February. By then the light is coming back in a noticeable way. Snowdrops and crocuses start to appear again, you have that sense that Spring is within touching distance. November on the other hand can fuck off. Everything's drying. It's grey, and just keeps getting darker and darker.

You are 100% right. I have had this exact argument with my husband. THe crucial difference is that by Feb the end is in sight. We've barely started this run of shit months.

Slumberly · 25/11/2019 19:55

@GiveHerHellFromUs Beautiful colours, cosy evenings, woolly hats and cuddling up under a blanket on a Sunday afternoon watching a shit film!
@Caramel78 I prefer it but I’m a home bird who loves cosy days/nights in reading my books or watching films.

What you don't seem to understand is that you can do this 'cosy' shite at any time of year. There is nothing preventing you from wasting your life 'under a blanket' watching a film in the summer if that's your preference.

If, on the other hand, you actually crave/enjoy/need to get out into the world, then it's almost impossible to do that when the elements actively attack you every time you step outside the front door.

The two things are not equivalent.

PineappleDanish · 25/11/2019 21:17

I vote to ban the words cosy and snuggle as they're so fucking twee.

I dint want to sit under a blanket. I'm not cold. But unless it's a magic blanket it's not going to make the days light again.

Delatron · 25/11/2019 21:20

Yes Slumberly and the raving about hot chocolate and stews etc. Just have it in August if you fancy. It was rainy and shit and about 15 degrees for most of August so fill your boots then.

I can’t go and sit in my garden now with a lovely glass of chilled wine can I? I can’t take the dog for a lovely walk in the evening sun by the river (or even an early morning walk). I can do it in the dark and cold and drizzle for sure.

It must get pretty boring sitting under a blanket for 6 months watching crap films.

Userzzzzz · 25/11/2019 21:41

The weather is shit. Even my 3 year old came out with this today ‘mummy I love jumping in puddles but there is just too much rain to enjoy them’ I love autumn, I love cold and crisp. I just hate rain and miserable skies.

Vulpine · 25/11/2019 21:49

Improving your immune system would help! Get outside and do some some exercise.

PineappleDanish · 25/11/2019 21:53

Why do people keep posting such nonsense? Going out for a walk is not going to change hoe bright the day is, or how many hours of daylight there are. Hmm

Goldenbear · 25/11/2019 21:55

My theory is that if it's not health related (which is obviously a valid reason to hate it) People who don't like winter are very active, the type of people that can't sit still in their home and certainly not long enough to watch a film. This is anecdotal research and not a judgement on my part but the people out know who detest it are those that love activities like camping or cycling. I don't mind being cosy but I love watching films and the weather provides more of an excuse to do this.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 25/11/2019 21:57

It'd be so much easier to enjoy if it didn't rain every fucking day.

It starts getting dark at 2.30pm which is so frustrating sat in an office with 3 walls of windows. So oppressive.

Goldenbear · 25/11/2019 22:03

Today was a bit miserable though. I went to work and it was dark, I work in a windowless office, so have the lights on all year round, when I came out it was similar weather but darker. However, I loved the crisp cold the other week with the sun and brightness.

KeepYourCup · 25/11/2019 22:20

I have a theory that the winter lovers/summer haters:

1. Live in a stuffy flat in London with no outside space
Victorian flat with a garden in a rural, seaside town
2. Don’t have children
I have a 10yo
3. Can afford to heat their home comfortably in winter
Not really, I spend alot of time with a hot-water bottle up my jooks
4. Own a tumble dryer
Nope, my washing goes on the line outside, unless its pissing down
5. Don’t live in an area prone to flooding
I haven't personally been affected but surrounding areas have flooded badly this year
6. Don’t live in an area that gets badly affected by snow
Not terribly, but the roads are often blocked and there have been food shortages because deliveries were unable to make it through
7. Don’t drive to and from work in the dark in awful weather in winter
I do

I like this time of year. I like how night time is actually dark, that I can walk around without feeling hot and sweaty, can stay home without feeling guilty about not "making the most" of the sunshine.

I'm not a "cosy hot choc lover" either mind you, but I find the darkness and the cold quite calming.

MerryDeath · 25/11/2019 22:20

I'm struggling this year as i have a toddler to entertain, I'm 8 months pregnant, we have a house to renovate so no spare money and DP is working away a lot. ordinarily I like winter a lot (although not christmas!) but i like seasonal changes, i like winter food, winter clothes, being cozy, not feeling like I'm missing out on anything, guilt free staying in. there are good things to be found about all the seasons but it is a little bit harder with children to nurture. paw patrol only works for so long.

user764329056 · 25/11/2019 22:28

I agree OP, on days like today it feels like it never really gets light, just grey gloom all day and I know vit D is recommended and very popular but it doesn’t really seem to help much
Am sure we’re built for hibernation, a big feast and then sleep till spring
And don’t get me started on Christmas and the relatives you can’t relate to!

Ginfordinner · 25/11/2019 22:32

KeepYourCup I line dry my washing when it isn't raining. The point I was trying to make is that I haven't been able to line dry for several weeks as we have had too much rain. And on the days it hasn't rained it has been too damp to line anyway.

And where I live we very rarely get suffocatingly hot weather.

madcatladyforever · 25/11/2019 22:34

I love winter but I hate the endless colds and being sick.
I grew up in the tropics and trust me the oppressive heat is too much all the time.
You really appreciate the seasons.

Delatron · 25/11/2019 22:38

It’s not just nighttime that is dark though? We lose light from early afternoon. I spend a lot of time driving kids round to various after school activities and it’s awful doing the whole thing in the dark and rain. There’s no sitting on the sofa at 4pm surrounded by candles until you go to bed is there? Most people are out commuting, trying to walk dogs, do exercise etc. All in the bloody endless dark and rain.

NoShitHemlock · 25/11/2019 22:45

I am already bloody fed up - am too fat to be this cold all the sodding time Angry

Dangermouse80 · 25/11/2019 22:47

I'm with you op, want to hibernate always.
