It’s ‘best of a bad bunch’ in my case but there are three threads petrified of BJ/Tories so wondered if any MN Tories would like to gather here!

Posted too soon - the lack of Nobel prize winners will be the result Labour's plan to 'integrate' private schools.

What exactly are you implying here @Clavinova ? That state school kids are not clever enough to win Nobel prizes?

MissConductUS · 25/11/2019 20:57

As for the NHS data systems, contracting out is a completely false economy, when there would be a lot of value in having an in-house development department. We are only becoming more dependent on digital. The savings and benefits would be astronomical.

Maybe not. Commercial software companies make money by spreading their costs over many different customers. Epic and Nextgen, the two big EMR vendors in the US, have hundreds of hospital customers. The two systems have undergone more than a decade of development and enhancement. Unless it's very simple software (which EMR is not) it's much cheaper to implement off the shelf software than to write your own.

Clavinova · 25/11/2019 20:58

You literally quoted me saying the article highlighted the pitfalls, so I’m not sure why you think this is a surprise to me?

Substantially higher taxes for the average citizen deserves a special mention - it's not what the Labour Party are peddling.

Clavinova · 25/11/2019 21:04

No - quality of establishment:

•In the international sphere, nearly two thirds (63%) of British Nobel Prize winners were educated privately, one quarter (28%) at grammars and 8% at comprehensives.

Jeremy Corbyn wants to abolish private schools and grammar schools given half a chance.

Bobbybobbins · 25/11/2019 21:10

@Clavinova

Would be great if all schools were top quality and could produce potential Nobel winners. My comp has better VA than either of our local private schools so it can be done.

Deathgrip · 25/11/2019 21:12

I see that the Labour plan is in close proximity to Greece and Italy...

Again, this is such a straw man. We have a completely different economic set up to both countries, and aren’t in the Euro for a (very significant) start.

And slightly above Portugal - Portugal's Socialist Prime Minister threatened to resign earlier this year if his parliament approved a back-dated teachers' salary increase.

The Portugal where this is the economy and the unemployment stats? How terrifying.

What about all the other countries on that list?

Wow, this is a bit of an "I Am Spartacus!" moment for MN!

I'm another Conservative voter Grin

Deathgrip · 25/11/2019 21:19

And this is a problem because? We already have a situation where the numbers of working people in poverty and / or homeless are rising. Increasing tax for people on lower incomes in our current society is not feasible, since a large proportion are eligible for and reliant on in-work benefits as it is. Taking additional tax and paying it back in tax credits is a waste of time and money.

Clavinova · 25/11/2019 21:19

Yes - but it's obviously not working in Sweden - the country we are supposed to be copying!

Read the thread BMW6, the source is named earlier.
I can't see a source either - the graph is shown at 19:16 but it's not in the link.

Again, this is such a straw man.We have a completely different economic set up to both countries, and aren’t in the Euro for a (very significant) start.

Exactly - what is the point of your chart? You think we should bankrupt ourselves like Greece did? Italy?

Clavinova · 25/11/2019 21:23

(Substantially higher taxes for the average citizen deserves a special mention - it's not what the Labour Party are peddling.)

And this is a problem because?

The Labour Party are lying through their teeth?? What happened to 'only the top 5% will be taxed more'?

Deathgrip · 25/11/2019 21:23

It’s really not that hard to understand - it’s demonstrating that the plans are not some extreme unprecedented spending spree.

And since no UK government is planning to fraudulently misrepresent our financial situation in order to adopt the Euro, those comparisons are baseless.

I'm not sure how the at thing works as I've only been on here once before

Well, that’s not true now woolie34 is it?! Tut tut.

twofingerstoEverything · 25/11/2019 21:26

I don’t want a no deal Brexit.
You should be a bit more careful with your vote then ThickAndThin
Even the Daily Express thinks it's on the table, which makes sense when you think of the speed with which Johnson reckons he'll have us out of the EU.

Clavinova · 25/11/2019 21:28

October 2019:
In austerity-scarred Portugal, fiscal discipline is a vote winner. Grin

"LISBON (Reuters) - Portugal’s Socialist Prime Minister Antonio Costa aims to retain power at Sunday’s parliamentary election with a pledge that looks like an unlikely vote-winner for western Europe’s poorest country" - "no backtracking on tight spending controls."

Where are they lying? Labour aren’t proposing implementing the Swedish tax model.

Clavinova · 25/11/2019 21:30

It’s really not that hard to understand - it’s demonstrating that the plans are not some extreme unprecedented spending spree.

No it doesn't - it demonstrates that it might be as bad as Italy or Greece - toss a coin.

midnightmisssuki · 25/11/2019 21:31

Here i am! - Conservative voter through and through. The thought of JC/labour person becoming PM is my family's worst nightmare - JC will drag everyone back to the bloody 50's.

BMW6 · 25/11/2019 21:31

At £82.9bn in additional spending on public services by 2023-24 – and with a package of tax increases to match – the pledges are almost double the £48.6bn outlined by the party in 2017.

This is c&p from The Guardian article today
"Labour manifesto comes with risks but price may be worth paying"

So the bar chart posted by deathgrip at 20;39 has no relevance to the 2019 manifesto.

I presume labour supporters don't have an issue with the Guardian being biased against Labour?

Clavinova · 25/11/2019 21:33

Where are they lying? Labour aren’t proposing implementing the Swedish tax model.

The journalist in your Guardian link obviously does.

EntropyRising · 25/11/2019 21:36

the NHS could develop proper systems in house which could be used universally and make everything joined up.

To say this is unrealistic is an understatement.

Deathgrip · 25/11/2019 21:38

Yes, they do. Additional public spending is what it says, not total.

ArseDarkly · 25/11/2019 21:38

Labour manifesto comes with risks but price may be worth paying

The Tory manifesto - i.e. Brexit and quite possibly No-Deal Brexit - comes with terrible risks and certainly isn't a price worth paying.

That's the essence of difference between voting Labour and Tory

DustyDiamond · 25/11/2019 21:40

Have finally managed to read the thread! (Bookmarked way back this morning... 🙄)

I thought I was going to vote Tory until today, but then I had the pleasure of reading woolie 'hey, I care!' 34 & Effervescent 'I, an affluent high-rate tax payer' Elephant & their insightful posts.

They have totes persuaded me to vote for Jezsus & chums!!

....just kidding....
