It’s ‘best of a bad bunch’ in my case but there are three threads petrified of BJ/Tories so wondered if any MN Tories would like to gather here!

A man goes into a number of car dealerships to choose a new car. It’s a difficult decision - a big investment. Some are expensive but economical to run. Some are cheap but have rather poor reliability.

In all the car dealerships he comes across sales people. They explain the benefits of each car and why it is more suitable for the buyer than others.

In the last dealership he goes in he is told he is a fucking idiot if he buys any other car. Doesn’t he know he’s poisoning the environment and killing everyone? If he’s even thinking of buying anything else then he’s obviously been sucked in by all the lies the other manufacturers tell. If he buys anything else then he should hang his head in shame because he’s such a disgrace. In fact, he doesn’t deserve to have a car.

Good sales pitch, isn’t it?

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 25/11/2019 13:56

it's not that people are just trying to be horrible it's just logical to me. One party has irrefutable proof or hurting minorities and vulnerable groups. The others manifesto is full of trying to help them

You just can't help deifying yourself can you? Have you not realised that we are ALL just trying to do the best we can?

You and your Labour friends aren't just sitting there like angels with their wings clipped, ready to deliver a bounteous shangri-la for everyone, if only it weren't for evil forces stopping you sharing this Eden.

People just like you and me have looked at all the polices and ideas from the crappy choices available, and gone with the one we think is the best, if wholly imperfect, solution. We're all trying to do what we think is right because we live here too.

You don't have a monopoly on "good" and your piety (and others' aggressive, abusive comments) in trying to advance that notion is ridiculous.

Alsohuman · 25/11/2019 13:56

@Navisprite, why did you appeal to two MPs? To my certain knowledge only your own constituency MP is able to help in cases such as yours.

SingingLily · 25/11/2019 13:57

what about moving on somewhere else OP, so we can continue our chat?

Try the Brexit Arms. It's mostly Conservative-voting (but not exclusively) and mostly Leave-supporting (but not exclusively). All views are welcome, whatever your political persuasion as long as you are not goady or insulting and as long as you enjoy a laugh and a chat.

woolie34 · 25/11/2019 13:57

@ReadtheSmallPrint does he also say that if you buy a different car you're a terrorist supporting communist who hates Jewish people?

EffervescentElephant · 25/11/2019 13:58

@Chattybum, I am an economic sociologist. I gather my evidence from an array of primary sources such as government reports, statistics, interviews (done by me) and fieldwork. I use both quantitative and qualitative methodology, have just come from a gathering evidence trip in a particular type of town in Britain to complete my last book project in this line of work (being fluffy as this is outing).

I would suggest, for information, to stick to broadsheets such as the Guardian and the Times (unless you are doing a comprehensive study of 'tabloid' language) whilst being aware of confirmation bias, and have a quick look at secondary sources and histories of the period - I'd say that Hobsbawn book on the short 20th century gives a fantastic background to our own 21st century. I have already suggested Mariana Mazzucato's books earlier in the thread.

Finally, there is a wealth of evidence, not belief, that supports the difference in life that people experience under socially minded government (Labour) versus unmitigated capitalism ones (Tory) - for instance, the recent Unicef report was rather scathing of the current government's impact on the lives of children in this country. - you can see it here:

GhostofFrankGrimes · 25/11/2019 13:59

What does "doing the best we can" mean? It could be applied to anything and used to justify anything.

SingingLily · 25/11/2019 13:59

what else would you save for

Whatever you think is important to you.

By the way, Woolie, please don't @ me. I'm already on the thread. Thanks.

Gruffalosgrandma · 25/11/2019 13:59

Genuinely interested to know why anyone finds Jeremy Corbyn terrifying.

Chattybum · 25/11/2019 14:00

I thought the times was owned by Murdoch and could therefore not be relied on because it's a right wing Tory rag according to Woolie. Make your minds you guys.

woolie34 · 25/11/2019 14:00

@BuzzShitbagBobbly that's just it, I don't see labour's policies as crappy. They say they will help people. I don't understand how pointing that out makes me a bad person to you.

JKScot4 · 25/11/2019 14:00

@Goddessofgrowth
Can I ask on a personal level if you read a post on MN about someone’s DH who was a serial cheat and liar, a racist and had a child he refused to acknowledge, what would you think of him?
Yet you think these are admirable qualities for a PM 🙄🙄
Women consistently voting against their own selves 🙄

ReadtheSmallPrint · 25/11/2019 14:01

@woolie34 no - and nobody says that about Labour voters and you know it. People say that about Corbyn - but not people who vote for his party.

Throw all the insults about Boris that you like, I agree with the vast majority of them. It’s the vitriol aimed at tory voters I am talking about. Can you really not see the difference?

EffervescentElephant · 25/11/2019 14:01

My last post was in response to @Chattybum who was asking for sources. Oh, because of my work I have also been to the annual conferences of all major parties in the UK.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 25/11/2019 14:02

“Women consistently voting against their own selves 🙄”

Stupid little women, get back in your box, you can’t possibly understand what you are voting for.

woolie34 · 25/11/2019 14:03

@singinglily sorry for @ing you. Do you mean like luxurious holidays and the like that poor people save for?

Goddessofgrowth · 25/11/2019 14:03

@Chattybum: I thought the times was owned by Murdoch and could therefore not be relied on because it's a right wing Tory rag according to Woolie. Make your minds you guys.

I did clearly state "whilst being aware of confirmation bias" - my repartee to the Times was that it is not neutral. No newspaper is.

SingingLily · 25/11/2019 14:04

Woolie, despite me asking you nicely, you've done it again.

Please do not @ me. I'm already on the thread. Thank you.

scaryteacher · 25/11/2019 14:04

Limited the Judicial Review consultations seem to have been ongoing since 2012, so I think it's being carefully considered. Should we not look at procedures from time to time to see if they are still fit for purpose?

As long as it is recognised (and there is no doubt that it is) that Russia is dabbling, then I think we are OK. There are enough professional cynics around who have seen how the game is played (and played it themselves) to combat this. It's when they retire that it gets worrying, and that's the stage we'll be at in about 10 years time.

It's the Chinese infiltration that I find more worrying. I don't think we should be using Huawei in anything government based.

NaviSprite · 25/11/2019 14:04

@Alsohuman I appealed to both because I was in an area that fell under the Labour constituency but looking to move to the other side of the city boundary which is Conservative constituency. It is separated between South and North as far as I understand it. Now both areas are back to being under Labour but during the time I was in the situation there was a split.

Alsohuman · 25/11/2019 14:05

It’s possible to cause harm by helping people

Genuine question, how?

woolie34 · 25/11/2019 14:05

@ReadtheSmallPrint Ive been called that. A lot. I'm pretty sure I might have been earlier on this thread even. 😂 You get bad eggs on both sides.

jakeyboy1 · 25/11/2019 14:05

I've already voted as have a postal vote. Tory. I'm not happy about it but it's better than the alternative. DH works in finance in a role heavily influenced by economics, every time labour's proposed spending figures come out he is in hysterics.

EffervescentElephant · 25/11/2019 14:06

SingingLily you can switch off notifications - not an arsey post - mentioning in case you are not aware :)
