To feel worried about the future? (Election related)

I’m incredibly sick of the society we’re living in. It’s bleak and horrible. When you hear about the millions of children in poverty and over 130000 people who have died as a result of austerity it makes me so sad.

My dh and I are working 4 jobs between us just to be able to save up for a house, whereas my elder siblings managed to buy in the 90’s when everything was cheaper with tiny deposits. No matter how we save, house prices keep rising and our “25%” deposit figure keeps getting bigger.

I feel deflated and feel like there’s no hope. Liars and cheats are the winners in this world. Hard working people get nothing. I’m probably feeling over emotional but the thought of another 5 years of tories fills me with terror.

@BubblesBuddy if everyone "gets an education" and becomes a naice teacher, who is going to wipe your arse in a nursing home, collect your bins or provide other essential services? Where will they live? Because I can tell you rents in some parts of the country are extortionate compared to pittance salaries.

Also, I have just left a job in social services where there are scant resources for children in care, what future do they have when the council has been asked to cut a further 4m from their budget this year, after 2m last year and similar years before... it is unsustainable and places children at risk. But who cares about child protection if you might have to pay an extra £20 a month in tax eh.

Deathgrip · 25/11/2019 07:36

I don’t intend to try and change their mind - they’re either completely ignorant or don’t care.

There are always people reading and not commenting, however, who may read them. It’s always worth calling out bullshit.

MaMaMaMySharona · 25/11/2019 07:52

How anyone could think there’s a choice - let alone a difficult one - between the Tories and Labour is entirely beyond me. Talking about dangerous men? One of these men is incredibly dangerous, yes. The other one has spent most of his life campaigning for equal rights and peace.

Playing Tory bingo is disgusting - yes there are a lot of things that are continually brought up when discussing the Tories - because they are awful! It’s not like any of this is made up and you’d be an absolute fool to ignore them.

YouJustDoYou · 25/11/2019 08:07

Saying Labour has "fully costed" everything is concerning because it's based on taxing people and companies who can easily just up and leave, as has been utterly discussed to death on other threads. How are they going to get their money then to fun all this, when the 5% can just up and leave? (According to the NHS carers advice website GPs and consultants pay also go past that 80k higher tax bracket. We are severely deprived of nhs staff as it is, and if Labour get in I can only hope those same gps and consultants will stay with our country even though they'll then be taxed even more than they already are on their pensions. There was a report some time ago on how many GPs are simply reducing their hours so their pension tax is reduced, which is massively hitting patient waiting lists - www.gponline.com/three-quarters-gps-reducing-work-pension-tax-bma-poll-reveals/article/1592677 .

TheSultanofPingu · 25/11/2019 08:17

Good point Deathgrip.
And I take it back, you are most certainly not wasting your time.
People need pulling up on the bullshit they spout.

Iggly · 25/11/2019 08:18

The people hoarding great amounts of wealth - the billionaires - are keeping money at the expense of everyone else. Including those on £80k.

They are highly mobile and can move their money around. They won’t be deterred by income tax changes.

kikisparks · 25/11/2019 08:22

@Lazypuppy Labour are renewing Trident (which is a huge waste of money and I think most in Scotland want rid of it but there you go). How is JC more of a misogynist than BJ? And staying neutral on Brexit is responsible, that way he can deliver the will of the people without an agenda, unlike Boris who is alienating half the country by saying “get Brexit done” which doesn’t even mean anything.

I’m not even voting Labour but the misinformation being spread about them is worrying.

Iggly · 25/11/2019 08:27

Norway has a sovereign wealth fund

Yes because, unlike the Tory idiots, the Norway government decided to keep its wealth from natural resources for the public good.

Imagine if we’d saved and better taxes our wealth from North Sea oil? Instead the Tories were too quick to spend it all instead of investing it, letting the private companies get away with more than they should. If we’d adopted the Norway model, we’d be a richer country.

Well done tories. Too quick to spend the money and no look to the future.

kikisparks · 25/11/2019 08:29

@CendrillonSings and keep lots of children in poverty?

@areyouawarem8 I don’t need to read headlines, I see child poverty every day in my job. It is slightly mitigated here by the Scottish government but they can’t change universal credit, benefit cap, 2 child policy, zero hour contracts, sanctions, crap DWP fit for work assessments or other austerity policies.

TheGoogleMum · 25/11/2019 08:33

@youjustdoyou labour also increasing pay for those in public service by 5%, so that may help even out the extra tax to be paid by doctors? Although I may not know enough about how gps work

greywoollyjumper · 25/11/2019 08:38

YANBU - I am terrified for the future too. Not just because of what is happening right now to public services but also because of the attitude of people to it. I just cannot fathom how someone earning a healthy salary would begrudge paying a bit more tax for the greater good.

TabbyMumz · 25/11/2019 08:43

"I wish I could leave the country"
Put another stance on this. You are actually incredibly lucky to live in this country. People from other countries put their lives at risk to come here.
Who are the 130000 people you mention who died because of austerity?

GhostofFrankGrimes · 25/11/2019 08:55

Comparing a rich first world country to an impoverished war torn one is false equivalence. People are actively voting to dismantle public services and you wonder why the rest of us are exasperated

TabbyMumz · 25/11/2019 09:08

"People are actively voting to dismantle public services"
Who is doing this and what are you referring to?
"impoverished war torn one"....which one do you think I'm referring to? People are wanting to come here from all over the world.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 25/11/2019 09:15

People are coming here from poorer countries which is a world away from voting to make a country that had good infrastructure and services worse off.

I am referring to a decade of austerity.

OctopusNow · 25/11/2019 09:16

The idea of Labour getting in genuinely terrifies me, it would be a total disaster for our country.

TabbyMumz · 25/11/2019 09:19

"People are coming here from poorer countries...."
Yes, this is entirely my point, we are incredibly lucky to live here.
I'm still not sure what you mean. Who is voting to dismantle public services?

GhostofFrankGrimes · 25/11/2019 09:21

Care to elaborate octopus? How do you think the country is benefiting from austerity and brexit? Are you pleased with NHS staff shortages and record number of food banks?

MrsMaiselsMuff · 25/11/2019 09:27

@TabbyMumz Are you not aware of austerity and all the cuts public services have already had? What about the school your children goes to, or the GP services in your area? What about social care and social services for our most vulnerable children and adults?

MrsMaiselsMuff · 25/11/2019 09:28

I'm disabled and I don't think there's any more that the Tories can throw at us. But I'm sure they'll find something, they always do.

DdraigGoch · 25/11/2019 09:42

@StillNoEyeDeer
Despite the fact Labour's manifesto is fully costed,
The figures in that are an utter fantasy. Even if you hiked up the tax rate to 98% for those on £80k+ and all of them stuck around and paid it (experience with Callaghan is that they'd avoid it), it wouldn't fetch enough for what they're planning.

I wonder why £80k is the figure they settled upon. Can't be anything to do with the fact that MPs 'earn' £79.5k...

Justanotherlurker · 25/11/2019 09:55

Despite the fact Labour's manifesto is fully costed,

Again with the joke about it being fully costed.

It has not been fully costed at all, even remotly

MrsDoylesTea · 25/11/2019 10:08

You're not being unreasonable - if Jeremy Corbyn gets within spitting distance of No. 10 the country will be at a standstill, if not bankrupt within months. They are economically illiterate, student-politics of envy lightweights who would also embarass us on the world stage,

So yes, you're right to feel worried, that so many people don't seem to see through their lies!

havingtochangeusernameagain · 25/11/2019 10:10

You should feel more terrified at the thought of Labour getting back in

Yeah right. I'm a lot more scared of the Tories (Brexit Party in all but name).

havingtochangeusernameagain · 25/11/2019 10:12

if Jeremy Corbyn gets within spitting distance of No. 10 the country will be at a standstill, if not bankrupt within months

Possibly within a few years, not months. But they can be voted out again.

But if the Tories get in it will happen in January 2021. And we won't be able to just walk back into the EU.
