To ask what you’d leave out of Christmas dinner if you didn’t have to consider others?

For me, it would be most of the veg.

I was grateful to be invited to a family member’s Christmas dinner last year, but with 4 different stuffings and endless veg, I was a bit bewildered! Fabulous, but so much work for the hosts. The company was fantastic, I wouldn’t have cared if we’d had toast!

I think I’d stick to chicken, not turkey, one stuffing and roasties. Possibly green beans, because they’re delicious with gravy. 🍴

Id leave out turkey. Bleugh. Theres a reason it isnt eaten much the rest of the year

ClaraThePigeon · 24/11/2019 19:22

Gravy. I hate the bloody stuff.

TheMasterBaker · 24/11/2019 19:22

Parsnips, I absolutely hate everything about them and the smell contaminates everything else they go in the oven with. However DH absolutely adores them so I coo them for him.

KronksSpinachPuffs · 24/11/2019 19:23

I agree with the veg! I like roast parsnips but I feel like people only have the other veg because it's the socially accepted thing to do!

TheQueef · 24/11/2019 19:24

Stopped parsnips ages ago.
Don't regret it.
Stringy fuckers.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 24/11/2019 19:24

sprouts. I cant stand them

RuskBaby · 24/11/2019 19:25

Roast potatoes Grin

GunpowderGelatine · 24/11/2019 19:25

So much

Turkey
Parsnips
Christmas pudding
Christmas cake
Sprouts that are boiled

I'd honestly just have a plate of pigs in blankets and some slice up sprouts sautéed with pancetta and chestnuts and I'd be happy

SamBeckett · 24/11/2019 19:26

Who on earth needs 4 different stuffings ? Confused
I would leave out a lot of the extra veg that seems to be the thing to eat at xmas dinner , ie each veg just one way - steamed , roast or boiled carrots not all three .
Four different veg plus spuds is plenty .

wolfmom · 24/11/2019 19:27

Meat. I love all the veg and mum's nut roast, but, partner and my dear child seem to view vegetables as potential carriers of the plague so it's the one time I can go crazy with veg

WilheldivaHater · 24/11/2019 19:27

Honestly, I'd chuck out the whole bloody dinner and just get pizza or Chinese takeaway if I had my way.

I hate roast dinners and Christmas dinner is just an even bigger roast with some meats wrapped in other meats, which you could do at any point in the year but don't bother and then suddenly it becomes essential over Christmas, I honestly don't get why people like it.

Vanillaradio · 24/11/2019 19:27

Sprouts! Hate them but dh loves them and thinks it's not Christmas dinner without them.

Yutes · 24/11/2019 19:27

I would have something nicer than chicken.
I tend just to do carrots and parsnips, roast potatoes, chipolatas and main meat.

ColdRainAgain · 24/11/2019 19:28

Another vote for gravy

Makemeaname · 24/11/2019 19:28

Turkey, worst roast meat going. Tbh, I'm not a roast dinner fan at all so I'd be binning it all off and making something else.

Bouncebacker · 24/11/2019 19:28

I love the veggies! Braised Red cabbage, mashed swede and carrots, parsnips, sprouts with pancetta.... love it! I wouldn’t leave out any of it - I love two types of stuffing, bread sauce and cranberry sauce made from real cranberries- not from a jar - and lashings of proper gravy made from meat juices, red and stock from the giblets.... ooooh Christmas dinner!

Outsomnia · 24/11/2019 19:30

Everything to be perfectly honest.

It seems to be a lot of faff for nothing in the end. It is just a dinner after all.

We are a family that meets up Christmas morning for Prosecco and nibbles and we take turns. Then back home, into the jammies and something simple and tasty to eat. No worries.

Elbeagle · 24/11/2019 19:30

Well DH cooks Christmas dinner but we do basically just please ourselves... didn’t realise we had to do otherwise actually! We tend to have something like beef Wellington, roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, braised red cabbage and carrots and broccoli. All the things we like.

MissisBee · 24/11/2019 19:30

The actual turkey. I'd have everything else though - stuffing, potatoes, chipolatas, sprouts etc

UsernameTaken76 · 24/11/2019 19:31

Bread sauce I just don’t get adding a milk based sauce to a plate that has gravy on???

goose1964 · 24/11/2019 19:31

Sprouts, parsnips and sausages.

1Morewineplease · 24/11/2019 19:32

Parsnips
Christmas Pudding
Christmas Cake
Mince pies

Nextphonewontbesamsung · 24/11/2019 19:32

I'd forego all the fucking OTT build up to Christmas and the angst about my family. Everything in the dinner (even though I usually cook it all) I love.

NabooThatsWho · 24/11/2019 19:33

Turkey and ham.
I just like chicken.

misspiggy19 · 24/11/2019 19:33
