To ask what you’d leave out of Christmas dinner if you didn’t have to consider others?

For me, it would be most of the veg.

I was grateful to be invited to a family member’s Christmas dinner last year, but with 4 different stuffings and endless veg, I was a bit bewildered! Fabulous, but so much work for the hosts. The company was fantastic, I wouldn’t have cared if we’d had toast!

I think I’d stick to chicken, not turkey, one stuffing and roasties. Possibly green beans, because they’re delicious with gravy. 🍴

I’d skip the whole thing , just a glorified Sunday roast and not celebratory at all in my eyes

Cherrysoup · 24/11/2019 21:19

Merry Christmas anyway even though I detest it with every fibre of my being.

Sorry! I’m normally really bah humbug until the last minute, but I’m getting into the spirit this year for some reason, weird given it’s the first one without my Dad.

Meat! ESP if it’s turkey. I’m not vegan but prefer a nut roast anyday.

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 24/11/2019 21:23

My MIL.

DH’s brother’ family haven’t offered to host her in the 22 years we’ve been together

StepAwayFromGoogle · 24/11/2019 21:28

SPROUTS!

WalkAwaySugarbear · 24/11/2019 21:32

We stopped conforming to the traditional meal years ago, we don't like Turkey so we had lamb, beef or chicken for a few years,
we've had an Indian takeaway for the last 4 years, bloody marvellous. This year I will be cooking but not a roast, probably loads of christmassy party food.

I love roast dinner but DH and the DCs aren't fussed so it was pointless.

Mammyloveswine · 24/11/2019 21:32

I love all Christmas dinner! I'd add extras like Yorkshire puddings!

JaceLancs · 24/11/2019 21:37

Anything involving potatoes! Hate them
I do a meat and a poultry option
Stuffing
Pigs in blankets
Roast parsnips
Cauliflower cheese
Butternut squash/sweet potato mash
Carrots
Broccoli
Brussels sprouts
I also do roast potatoes - mash and new potatoes for those who like them

SweetSally · 24/11/2019 21:40

Leave out the turkey and have lamb joint instead with fresh Greek salad on the side instead of boiled veg

userxx · 24/11/2019 21:44

Walkaway - do you get the Indian delivered?

safariboot · 24/11/2019 21:44

Sprouts are disgusting. Parsnips can also take a hike.

Cooking for just two, we tend to get a ready-to-roast turkey joint, and they usually come up nice. I think being a sensible-sized piece not a giant whole bird helps it cook without getting dry.

But Christmas is the only time of year I bother doing any sort of roast dinner, and unless I fall ill I like to put the effort in.

WalkAwaySugarbear · 24/11/2019 21:45

Not delivered but ours is within walking distance, we have to place the order a day or two before to make sure they have everything ready.

Hazardexhausted · 24/11/2019 21:46

I'd leave out everything except roast potatoes.

I LOVE roast potatoes.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 24/11/2019 21:49

Carrots. They can bugger off. I'm lucky though that my mum is really good at remembering who likes what veg and dishing up to cater for our preferences.

73Sunglasslover · 24/11/2019 21:57

God I love it all. Including the veg (sprouts too!). It's my favorite meal of all time ever.

DontCallMeShitley · 24/11/2019 22:02

I already leave out the turkey.
My turkey lives at a rescue. I sent money every year so that more can be rescued from slaughter.

Butterfly02 · 24/11/2019 22:02

I asked my kids if they could have one thing from a Christmas dinner what would it be - pigs in blankets. (we're having pigs in blankets sandwiches for breakfast)
What they'd do for dinner if they could chilli and garlic bread and after mince pies and custard. So no faffing for me this Christmas!
I just think Christmas Dinner is to much a simple meat and two veg, potatoes and stuffing would be fine.

NumbersStation · 24/11/2019 22:35

What can I say @Mum2jenny Grin

I’m the biddy that beats the grinch for grinchiness....

Ninkanink · 24/11/2019 22:43

Nothing, because we do it exactly the way we like it.

This year it’ll be goose. Perfect roast potatoes, braised red cabbage, sprouts with pancetta and chestnuts, carrots and parsnips.

newdeer · 24/11/2019 22:48

bread sauce - disgusting devil's slop
sprouts - smell like farts. Why eat them when there are so many lovely veg around?
brandy butter - why add extra fat to fatty puddings like mince pies?

Hairwizard · 24/11/2019 22:51

I fucking love it all! We are hosting again this year (4 kids with 3 under 2 so not packing car up to go anywhere) which suits me. This year will be great cos 2 new babies first christmasGrin and not prego and sick as a dog. I will be able to enjoy ALL OF THE THINGS!! Yaaaassss!

Chillington · 24/11/2019 22:52

We only cook what we like so no turkey, sprouts or white sauce

This year we are having beef rib, roasties and vegetables. TBD on dessert. There'll be nibbles, champagne and biscuits. Can't wait!

Lollygaggles · 24/11/2019 22:52

I love all the veg, but don't want turkey or stuffing

Whatisthisfuckery · 24/11/2019 23:34

There hasn’t been a turkey in the Fuckery house for a few years now. I stubbornly cooked one for years despite nobody actually liking it, including me. I just do a chicken.

I hate all the sauces and absolutely refuse to cook sprouts. DP used to moan if I didn’t do them but it turns out she doesn’t actually like them that much. She just wanted them out of some weird christmas obligation. I’ve told her if she feels obliged to eat them then she can cook them as well. Funnily enough no sprouts have been on our christmas table since.

I generally hate cooking christmas dinner but I likes my roast parsnips and pigs in blankets too much not to.

I can’t be arsed with pudding but will get a trifle because I’d get moaned at if I didn’t do something.

Christmas dinner is a scaled down affair in the Fuckery house these days. I hate spending he whole day cooking and clearing up, and the flat I’ve recently moved into has a truly useless oven. Food would cook quicker if I just sat and breathed on it. I think I might have to start the dinner next week if I want to get it all cooked in time.

runlift · 24/11/2019 23:41

Pigs in blankets. Regular mini sausages rock it for me. Can't leave out all the lovely veg!
