To ask what you’d leave out of Christmas dinner if you didn’t have to consider others?

For me, it would be most of the veg.

I was grateful to be invited to a family member’s Christmas dinner last year, but with 4 different stuffings and endless veg, I was a bit bewildered! Fabulous, but so much work for the hosts. The company was fantastic, I wouldn’t have cared if we’d had toast!

I think I’d stick to chicken, not turkey, one stuffing and roasties. Possibly green beans, because they’re delicious with gravy. 🍴

Turkey - there's much nicer meats out there.

Sprouts - Eugh. They just aren't nice! No matter how much bacon you put with them.

UndertheCedartree · 24/11/2019 19:51

I'd have no meat as I'm veggie and honestly if I only had me to think of I wouldn't bother with a nut roast. I'd just have roast potatoes and parsnips, stuffing, peas and carrots, sauteed sprouts, red cabbage and cauliflower cheese and lashings of gravy. Christmas pudding with brandy butter and cream - I'd leave out custard. Stollen, mince pies and panettone but I'd leave out Christmas cake.

ClientListQueen · 24/11/2019 19:52

@WilheldivaHater I don't do Christmas and am usually alone for the day so I pick what I want
One year was pizza Grin last year was sausage and mash followed by chocolate sponge and custard
Haven't decided on this year yet.... I aim for maximum pleasure, minimum cooking!

GingerbreadTeen · 24/11/2019 19:52

To all those unreasonable sprout haters, roast them in the oven with a little oil long enough to brown them. Your Christmas meal will be transformed.

Problem is the boiling. Most score them, which will make them go soggy.

KittenLedWeaning · 24/11/2019 19:54

Carrots
Christmas pudding

We already have goose rather than turkey because none of us are turkey fans.

dementedma · 24/11/2019 19:54

I would ditch all the faff. If it were just me there would be some sort of meat - probably rare beef -, red cabbage, mashed potatoes and gravy. Job done.

ilovetofu · 24/11/2019 19:56

Turkey!

bridgetreilly · 24/11/2019 19:56

Gravy. I just don't like it. I'd rather have some yummy bread sauce and a spot of cranberry jelly.

ilovetofu · 24/11/2019 19:57

Oh and Xmas cake too. Vile!

Rookie93 · 24/11/2019 19:57

Can do without the whole thing -like 'nespressowoo' recommend scampi and chips. Have also done home cooked crispy duck and pancakes which was a fabulous change.

Baguetteaboutit · 24/11/2019 19:57

Christmas Pudding and Christmas cake and like the minimum entry requirement to get mince pies and brandy butter. I'd happily jettison the pair of them.

The sprouts could go but I'd keep the rest of the veg.

Outsomnia · 24/11/2019 19:58

If you need to make certain veg edible like sprouts and/or parsnips with cream, bacon and all that, forget it. It is so not worth it. Just masking the horrible taste and texture really for the sake of tradition.

OverthinkingThis · 24/11/2019 19:59

Generally i don't mind christmas dinner. I'd do it without bread sauce and cranberry sauce though, they are both bleugh. And I'd do a nicer dessert than christmas pudding.

user1497207191 · 24/11/2019 19:59

If it wasn't for others, I'd not have Christmas Dinner at all. Never liked the "meat and two veg" type of thing and hate carveries. I only go along with it because it's tradition and I tolerate it rather than enjoy it. If I never had another slice of carved meat it really wouldn't bother me at all. As for gravy - yuck.

If I were on my own, I'd probably just make myself a full English breakfast as a once a year treat.

Seeline · 24/11/2019 20:00

Bread sauce - but DH, DS &DM love it.

I do extra veg to ensure there is plenty for Boxing Day bubble and squeak with leftover meat.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 24/11/2019 20:00

Yorkshire puddings. There isn't really much else I don't like! And as for parsnips being stringy? What on earth are you doing to them??

transformandriseup · 24/11/2019 20:01

Turkey/Sprouts/Broccoli - the rest I love.

4 different stuffings? That sounds ridiculous

Lovelydovey · 24/11/2019 20:01

Turkey, cranberry sauce, pigs in blankets, Christmas pudding and trifle.

TrashPanda · 24/11/2019 20:02

The joint of meat whether it's turkey or something else, not fussed.

Give me a massive plate of pigs in blankets, stuffing, carrots, yorkies and gravy and I'll be fine

Although in all honesty I could forego the roast completely and eat all the starter food, a selection of pate, scallops, smoked salmon, garlic prawns and lobster would be perfect!

GrumpyHoonMain · 24/11/2019 20:03

Turkey

Moonflower12 · 24/11/2019 20:05

Absolutely hate parsnips. I never cook them. If people want them, they'd have to bring their own and eat them outside.

Outsomnia · 24/11/2019 20:06

The irony is that when I was a lot younger, Christmas dinner was such a treat because it was a once a year thing with lots of different grub.

But now every day could be Christmas day really so it is blx.

Kids love pizza remember! I know it is different when you are hosting, but I often wonder how much guests enjoy all the faff too.

Drbrowns · 24/11/2019 20:06

Mashed potatoes and trifle.

andannabegins · 24/11/2019 20:07

I wouldn't change anything about our Christmas dinners as we all have our favourite food for Christmas dinner. DP and I often have beef Wellington or similar, 1 DD usually has a curry, another has burger and chips. We have a big traditional dinner on Boxing Day but on Christmas Day we get our Christmas wish granted!!

spacepyramid · 24/11/2019 20:07

Sprouts. I'd include the parsnips (which I hate normally) if they are done roasted with honey which somehow renders them to be delicious.
