To be raging Grace Millane’s Murderer’s name is suppressed

MabelMoo23 · 22/11/2019 10:12

I know his name - it’s not hard to find - but it’s been legally suppressed until at least 2021

Grace has had her private life dragged through the mud, her parents had to hear accounts of her sex life - which let’s face it came from his account and his defence team.

And he gets his identity protected and the reason for it????

I’m not going to name him as I don’t want this post deleted, but apparently there are times in NZ law that identity can be protected because revealing it can affect other outcomes

Beautiful Grace, rest in peace

Fair enough - I am surprised though. You said you had a connection, so I am sorry for all you've been through.

I need to drop out of this thread and get on with my day now.

coconuttelegraph · 22/11/2019 21:24

Sorry for your loss @cpjoli

The name was available even before any arrest, the Facebook comment was discussed while Grace was still missing.

Rubyupbeat · 22/11/2019 21:25

I thought it was being suppressed until Feb 2020, when he is sentenced?
Maybe he is on trial for something else too, then it cant colour a jury decision?
Apparently it's only suppressed in an, it can be used elsewhere.

Rubyupbeat · 22/11/2019 21:25

New Zealand

Havaina · 22/11/2019 22:10

It seems like NZ law allows the defendant to ask for his name to be suppressed during a trial, this is most likely the reason why.

Cowardly cunt, killing a defenceless woman on a power trip but not brave enough for the world to know his name.

Ibiza2015 · 22/11/2019 22:31

cpjoli I’m so sorry for your loss.

MistyCloud · 22/11/2019 22:35

I also think everyone should know this monster's name.

Odd isn't it, how when someone dies in a 'rough sex' kind of scenario, it's almost always the woman. Very rarely does rough sex and BDSM result in the MAN dying. Hmm

Countryescape · 23/11/2019 08:42

NewZealands legal system is terrible! Archaic laws that often protect perpetrators and re-traumatise victims. It is disgusting his name is suppressed. From the whole of NZ, we are truly horrified by Grace’s murder. It is a national shame.

Trebla · 23/11/2019 08:48

Grace was found 6 minutes away from my house. I've been saddened by the use of her sexual 'preferences' in court for his defense. I feel it was callous and victim blaming. However, the media here agree and have been factual rather than salacious. I feel for her parents and brothers what an awful thing to have to go through and listen to for a scumbag to try and wriggle his way out of her murder. RIP

HisBetterHalf · 23/11/2019 08:48

names on twitter plus his photograph.

Trebla · 23/11/2019 08:53

I'm in NZ and I saw the name in the press in December. It was UK based online press NOT NZ press

StoneofDestiny · 23/11/2019 12:48

Picture and name in The Daily Mirror today - knowing his name in uk changes nothing

PollyShelby · 23/11/2019 12:52

Isn't it only suppressed because he has several other charges pending, and releasing it in NZ may mean he can't have a fair trial so may get off?

Emeraldshamrock · 23/11/2019 13:24

I read in the independent it was held for the trial the ban hasn't lifted yet.
mind you I read a Mnet thread in the independent.ie too

ChicCroissant · 23/11/2019 13:31

Well I was wrong that the thread would be deleted which I am pleased about Cultkid because it's good to have a discussion.

However I still think we should follow the NZ court directive, which is only for a matter of months. This is in relation to a convicted killer - it's not a footballer or politician hiding behind a superinjunction to avoid awkward questions - I assume that the NZ justice system knows what it is doing, they did get a conviction.

I also think it's pretty idiotic of MNHQ to allow the name to be mentioned at this stage as well tbh - it's not a race to the bottom with the tabloid press - yes, it is easily found on Google so let it stay there until the NZ judiciary say otherwise. You could be risking another victim's justice. It's not been mentioned on the news broadcasts that I've seen, they have respected NZ's ruling.

It's definitely not from a courtroom leak though!

JenniferM1989 · 23/11/2019 13:53

His name is Jesse Kempson and his name and photo are on the first result of a Google search written by the daily mail. I don't think anything is being suppressed really and rightly so

Havaina · 23/11/2019 13:56

Can people RTFT? His identity was revealed 24 hours ago on the thread 🤦🏻‍♀️🙄

coconuttelegraph · 23/11/2019 19:27

Can people RTFT? His identity was revealed 24 hours ago on the thread

If you'd read the thread haviana you'd know that his identity has been freely available for nearly a year now, this is getting silly now

cultkid · 24/11/2019 07:00

Chic,

Just because you think those things it doesn't make me an idiot so I want you to apologise
It really offended me

winetomorrow · 24/11/2019 08:01

I'm in NZ and I had no idea of his name before reading this thread. Any links to UK pages comes up as 'sorry you're not allowed to access this' (although I realise with a bit of IT knowledge I could find a way around that).

But there's obviously still reasons for the suppression. And luckily I won't be called up for jury duty anytime soon as I'm not quite a citizen yet.

Highly recommend reading The Spinoff and Emily Writes views on this case, much more respectful and thoughtful than the articles I've read in the international press (which I've mostly avoided after reading the headlines).

It's difficult because open courts provide clear justice but in cases like this if only the press could find a bit of sensitivity in their reporting but to do that people would need to stop reading/clicking on the links (and I say that as someone who has friends who work in the press and has read this thread and clicked on a link).

What a sad world we live in. I hope Grace Millane's family can find some peace.

His name was definitely freely available before he was charged. There have been other women selling stories about going on dates with him so how would they know it were him if his name hadn't been released Confused

We should all just refer to him as a piece of shit, as that is what he is, but I do wonder if the NZ request to still withhold his name is because there are pending cases against him

loobyloo1234 · 21/02/2020 12:01

Sorry, just realised this is an old thread. As you were ....

Kablam · 22/02/2020 05:10

Suppression orders work to ensure a fair and just trial, and by keeping the order until it is lifted allows for any retrials, appeals, etc. that may have to be heard by someone who is not a judge to be heard impartially and justly. It's the way the NZ legal system works, and although this man is horrible, he does still legally have a right to a fair trial.

aurynne · 22/02/2020 06:29

Releasing his name can affect the jury for any other pending case he has. As frustrating as it is, if knowing his name will mean he does not get any more convictions then let him be un-named. how exactly does the World knowing his name help Grace's family?
