To be raging Grace Millane’s Murderer’s name is suppressed

MabelMoo23 · 22/11/2019 10:12

I know his name - it’s not hard to find - but it’s been legally suppressed until at least 2021

Grace has had her private life dragged through the mud, her parents had to hear accounts of her sex life - which let’s face it came from his account and his defence team.

And he gets his identity protected and the reason for it????

I’m not going to name him as I don’t want this post deleted, but apparently there are times in NZ law that identity can be protected because revealing it can affect other outcomes

Beautiful Grace, rest in peace

It seems at the end of the day, his sexual history convicted him rather than the victim's meaning he had a defence to murder open to him. Several women testified that he had attempted to strangle them during sex and were terrified.

ChristmasAngst · 22/11/2019 11:40

YABU, there is no need for us to know his name.

I am really surprised that he has been convicted because all throughout this I thought he would get off. I was basing that on own own crappy legal system which has a terrible track record for prosecuting murderers and rapists. Glad NZ's establishment are not as corrupt or inept as ours.

Ghostontoast · 22/11/2019 11:41

I agree with Shearwater.

Hotchox · 22/11/2019 11:42

I would have to assume his name being in the media would be prejudicial to some other ongoing trial. Either that, or it's someone with a very common name in NZ, or the same name as someone famous, and the authorities don't want the hassle of dealing with all the abuse anyone with that name will attract.

viques · 22/11/2019 11:48

Oops. Seems the Daily Mail didn't get the memo........

MockersFactCheckMN · 22/11/2019 11:48

I'd be more than happy if I never found out his name. That way I wouldn't need to forget him forever.

lyralalala · 22/11/2019 11:50

I think given that the NZ justice system has actually done what the UK (and many others haven't) and seen through this so-called defence we do need to trust that they have good reason for holding his name

It's only until 2021 which isn't long, doesn't appear linked to age, so very clearly says there are other cases or suspicions about him. Which suggests the system there is doing a good job and not just accepting the "women like it" card that works frighteningly easy here

Hopefully the press respect it so that the other women can get justice as well

misspiggy19 · 22/11/2019 11:50

He’s been named and shamed now.

astralweaks · 22/11/2019 11:51

No1 story in The Fail. Seems like it’s too late...

Wheredidigowrongggggg · 22/11/2019 11:55

I agree with that law - anonymity til conviction. I’m guessing it will be lifted soon.

LoisDevine · 22/11/2019 11:55

His name and photo is all over The Standard as well

lyralalala · 22/11/2019 11:56

I think that says a lot about what those publications think of women tbh

They’d quite happily ignore a reporting restriction that they’ve been asked to adhere to for very obvious reasons, but they’d rather be first in the naming race

Inebriati · 22/11/2019 11:59

I think he was convicted because NZ made strangling a specific offence. The police deal with 33 cases a week, and NZ has a population of approx 5 million people.

I've just seen his name and photo Confused.

easyandy101 · 22/11/2019 12:03

@Bluerussian

Mnhq have said not to name

Grimbles · 22/11/2019 12:04

What will knowing his name achieve? Vile bastard deserves to disappear into obscurity.

Her name is Grace, she is who matters and should be remembered

SoupDragon · 22/11/2019 12:04

And some posters on this thread.

Havaina · 22/11/2019 12:05

It sounds like the Mail unmasked him at 11.40am.

They must have been given permission surely?

karala · 22/11/2019 12:06

quite a few UK press sites have named him

CoastalWave · 22/11/2019 12:07

Headline news on the Daily Mail - with a name.

lyralalala · 22/11/2019 12:09

They must have been given permission surely?

They can’t force foreign media to comply. They can only ask. The judge asked.

Clearly to some publications the temptation to be first was too much

No doubt they’ll now go full course on as many gory stories about the guy and details of other women he may have harmed just because they can. Having given absolutely no fucks that they could risk justice for other victims

MockersFactCheckMN · 22/11/2019 12:10

The court order has no validity outside NZ

Celebelly · 22/11/2019 12:14

The media reporting around this has been absolutely shameful. Even when someone has been found guilty of her murder, the New Zealand Herald thought this was an appropriate headline... (changed now, of course, after the backlash on Twitter and elsewhere)

Headline news on the Daily Mail - with a name

The benchmark of responsible journalism

They've even derailed uk trials for the sake of a few more copies punted
