To be raging Grace Millane’s Murderer’s name is suppressed

MabelMoo23 · 22/11/2019 10:12

I know his name - it’s not hard to find - but it’s been legally suppressed until at least 2021

Grace has had her private life dragged through the mud, her parents had to hear accounts of her sex life - which let’s face it came from his account and his defence team.

And he gets his identity protected and the reason for it????

I’m not going to name him as I don’t want this post deleted, but apparently there are times in NZ law that identity can be protected because revealing it can affect other outcomes

Beautiful Grace, rest in peace

There's footage of her dad speaking outside court. He thanks many people, including their legal team who he says always gave Grace dignity and respect when they spoke of her in very personal contexts. I hope his statement receives more attention.

Blackopal · 22/11/2019 10:58

Thank you for the link.
So glad to see a campaign on this, absolutely heartbreaking and fury inducing to see the list of women.

I will be following the advice in the Act Now section.
Thank you

Always some idiot who get the thread shut down eh, cultkid? Why are you doing something that would help the convicted murdered to stop the case being discussed and not help the victim instead?

It's not new that murder victims can be defamed in court under the guise of the accused's defence, unfortunately. I don't know of a way to stop it.

cultkid · 22/11/2019 11:05

I'm not an idiot
What's the problem with sharing a link to a public source of information, a newspaper?
Don't be rude

SaveKevin · 22/11/2019 11:06

The Natalie connelly one is one that really shocked me, if I remember rightly forensics thought she was unconscious for most of her injuries.
How is that consensual?

IsadoraQuagmire · 22/11/2019 11:06

His name was in ALL the papers last December. They shut the stable door after the horse had bolted.

OnlyTheTitOfTheIceberg · 22/11/2019 11:07

However, the only name we all need to remember in this case is Grace Millane.

I agree with this sentiment. I felt the same about Reeva Steenkamp, and about too many other women whose names are forgotten while their murderers live on in notoriety, headlines and TV 'true crime' programmes. I understand your POV OP and am absolutely on board with stopping 'rough sex' as a defence to murder, but it's Grace's name I want to remember, not the POS who killed her.

cultkid just to let you know I've reported your post so as not to get the whole thread pulled.

SaveKevin · 22/11/2019 11:08

Please don’t name him. We don’t know why he’s not being named and it would be awful (if this is the reason) if another victim didn’t get justice based on the sharing of his name.

CatInTheDaytime · 22/11/2019 11:09

I was dreading him getting away with that horrific defence - I'm very relieved and glad it's headline news. Well done that NZ court and her lawyers. RIP Grace Flowers

crosspelican · 22/11/2019 11:09

He's probably not being sentenced til Feb because of other cases that are coming to course in the interim.

It feels so unequal at the moment that her life has been brutally exposed while he seems to be protected, but they can't risk an otherwise solid rape, assault or even murder case coming up against him falling apart because of a technicality. How many other victims has he got? They deserve his punishment too.

SoupDragon · 22/11/2019 11:11

They aren't going to have done it just for fun are they?

As it is part of their law that this can be done when appropriate, perhaps just assume they know what they are doing and why and let them get on with it.

category12 · 22/11/2019 11:12

I agree with pp's: I like the fact that Grace Milane's name is front and centre here, not her murderer. Too often the victims are virtually erased out of the picture, especially women.

Blackopal · 22/11/2019 11:13

Ok Soupdragon.

Alternatively, we can discuss it as we wish.

diddl · 22/11/2019 11:15

I don't see how it can ever be a defence.

Even if someone asks to be choked/strangled.

As soon as the other person decides to do that then ALL responsibility for what happens next MUST lie with them imo.

How can it not always be murder when you have chosen to take such an act?

GrumpyHoonMain · 22/11/2019 11:16

From what I could see only the media (and the daily mail) dwelled on the sexual parts of the testimony. The legal teams (prosecuting and defence) didn’t.

LightSwitchedOn · 22/11/2019 11:17

@ChicCroissant, unfortunately you cannot defame a dead person. Hence why they can tear a victim's reputation to shreds in an attempt to get this piece of filth off.

Interestingly, and possibly connected to this matter, NZ has recently brought in the crime of "attempted strangulation"

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 22/11/2019 11:17

chic he is allowed to be named internationally. Just not in New Zealand. It’s not an open secret.

Passthecherrycoke · 22/11/2019 11:19

I don’t understand the wide eyed “why do you need to know” posts

I want to know about all murderers. This particular man had a very troubling history and red flags. I want to know about those. It reminds me to trust my instincts and not fall into the female trap of not wanting to offend men who give me a bad feeling.

Havaina · 22/11/2019 11:20

Just watched the footage of the Wellington vigil for Grace, what a great turnout. A loss of another beautiful, talented young woman at the hands of a predatory male.

I can’t find his name anywhere. I saw his police interview, was that his real voice? Not so tough with the police as he is with young women.

placemats · 22/11/2019 11:22

Clearly there are reasonable arguments to suppress his name. I'm fine with that.

The verdict was clear and unanimous. Guilty.

The grief Grace's family has is all there for those who care for them. They are still clearly grieving for the loss of their daughter, but understand and appreciate all the help they have received during the last year.

MichaelMumsnet · 22/11/2019 11:26

Hi all. We've made a couple of deletions in this thread whilst we wait for more details. For now, we're going with the court's request to refrain from naming the New Zealand man. Other British media are abiding by the request too.

shearwater · 22/11/2019 11:33

Their legal system seems better than the UK at the moment, they have successfully prosecuted and found guilty of murder a man strangling a woman to death during sex. I don't think we've managed that here, it was always a "sex game gone wrong". We should be looking to them as an example rather than criticising.

recrudesence · 22/11/2019 11:33

I am just relieved he was convicted. I was genuinely worried the defence strategy would work. His naming can wait.
