To be raging Grace Millane’s Murderer’s name is suppressed

MabelMoo23 · 22/11/2019 10:12

I know his name - it’s not hard to find - but it’s been legally suppressed until at least 2021

Grace has had her private life dragged through the mud, her parents had to hear accounts of her sex life - which let’s face it came from his account and his defence team.

And he gets his identity protected and the reason for it????

I’m not going to name him as I don’t want this post deleted, but apparently there are times in NZ law that identity can be protected because revealing it can affect other outcomes

Beautiful Grace, rest in peace

Daily Mail here in Oz is still maintaining name surpression and pixelated face

MichaelMumsnet · 22/11/2019 12:21

Ok, now that a national newspaper has published the name, it's out there. We were waiting to see which UK newspapers went with a decision to publish or not. We won't be taking down further mentions because it's now in the public domain.
Thanks for bearing with us.

It's a bad day when the Daily Mail is the acceptable standard

The judge specifically asked UK media not to report. The women they were clearly trying to protect deserve justice just as much as Grace

IdblowJonSnow · 22/11/2019 12:36

The reason is so that the jury cant be prejudiced by knowing anything else about him. Or that's what I read.
I am so so pleased that hes been convicted of murder. Not sure that would have been the case in the UK.
RIP Grace. Flowers

BoreOfWhabylon · 22/11/2019 12:40

In fact, it's a temporary suspension only anyway, as explained here

www.stuff.co.nz/national/crime/109241149/grace-millane-case-police-issue-warning-over-breaching-defendants-name-suppression

The judge actually refused the application for name suppression. Kempson's lawyer immediately lodged an appeal against the ruling

Under New Zealand law, a judge who refuses name suppression must grant interim suppression for a 20-day appeal period if the defendant indicates they will appeal.

This means interim name suppression will continue until the appeal on Judge Thomas's decision can be heard in the High Court.

How can we challenge this defence here?

wecantconsenttothis.uk/

I agree with those pps who wrote thate that Grace and her family are the important people in this horrific story. The murdering fucker who murdered her should spend the rest of his life locked up for the protection of women.

I suspect his name is being withheld because there is another similar case against him outstanding.

I don't care what his name is, my thoughts are with Grace's family and friends.

Celebelly · 22/11/2019 12:47

You can't put the genie back in the bottle, though, regardless of who let it out. His name is now in the public domain in the UK.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 22/11/2019 12:48

I imagine the delay in sentencing is for background reports? That would be the normal process in the UK, anyway.

Havaina · 22/11/2019 12:48

Why didn’t the judge forbid the disclosure of the name? Similarly to how the names of the Doncaster brothers names have never been revealed (although that was because they were 12 and 10).

Passthecherrycoke · 22/11/2019 12:50

The judge did havaina but s/he’s in NZ. S/He doesn’t have any juristriction here

NaturalBornWoman · 22/11/2019 12:51

It's a bad day when the Daily Mail is the acceptable standard

Indeed. I really hope that no other women will fail to get justice because of this.

lyralalala · 22/11/2019 12:51

The fact it’s out on the DM sure doesn’t mean everyone else has to follow suit

That just means the DM feel justified in the actions. If the other media stuck to it and people showed that they dislike their decision to disregard it they’re less likely to keep doing it

Make them stand out as the ones that don’t give a fuck instead of joining in. Even the BBC did it with the migrant truck story. Minutes after the policewoman in charge asked, live on tv, for them not to name the driver they did. The could have given people a heads up to get rid of evidence

The race to be first to name is going to see a murderer or rapist walk free one day, I’m convinced of it

Havaina · 22/11/2019 12:54

The onus should be on men to refuse to choke a woman even if she asks him to. If you choke her and kill her then that should always be considered murder because you can’t consent to your own murder.

Havaina · 22/11/2019 12:55

@Passthecherrycoke

The judge did havaina but s/he’s in NZ. S/He doesn’t have any juristriction here

I get that but I’m sure there have been cases where names haven’t been revealed in foreign press too?

Clymene · 22/11/2019 13:00

God that is appalling @Celebelly

Passthecherrycoke · 22/11/2019 13:03

I’m not sure there is. If so, only as a curtesy.

I mean the U.K. media didn’t name him between now and the order being made in NZ originally (previous namings were before it was made)
The NZ versions of these papers won’t show the information though and it will be blocked from web searches in NZ.

Of course someone based in NZ could still find out if they wanted to- and as others have said he was named initially so his name is not unknown even in NZ.

Littletabbyocelot · 22/11/2019 13:09

Personally I think the killer's name should always be suppressed - fame / notoriety has been a motivation for some and I think an absolute blanking of them would be better

Sagradafamiliar · 22/11/2019 13:23

I'm glad that the media has named the cunt now, if not only so that women will know to avoid him on his inevitable release.
However, I blame the media much more than the NZ legal system, for publishing the details of Grace's private life, lending her no dignity in death whatsoever. If it's not bad enough to have it all laid open within the walls of the courtroom, to share it worldwide is sickening. So fucking immoral and repugnant of them.

SoupDragon · 22/11/2019 13:29

if not only so that women will know to avoid him on his inevitable release.

Good job it's not easy to change your name isn't it?

Oh, wait....

Havaina · 22/11/2019 13:29

@Passthecherrycoke thanks, I guess the NZ courts won’t allow him to be named because even though his identity is available online in some capacity in NZ it is still not as bad as all the tabloids writing about him daily.

It’s a bit of a double edged sword. I want him to be named so he knows that everyone knows he is a scumbag and liar but of course not if that jeopardises other cases.

SoupDragon · 22/11/2019 13:30

I don't see any benefit at all to having named him outside of the asked for "ban".

Sagradafamiliar · 22/11/2019 13:31

Maybe he will have a shit load of surgery to change his appearance now that he's been identified then, soup. I don't see how it isn't right that he has been revealed.

Beveren · 22/11/2019 13:41

The judge in this case has clarified that you cannot consent to your own death. How can we challenge this defence here?

It isn't an available defence in the UK.

Passthecherrycoke · 22/11/2019 13:42

He’s not going to benefit from a name change or surgery is he, he’ll be in prison for the next 20 odd years.

I’m glad he’s been named. It brings publicity to the situation which isn’t there when basic details are missing. It brings publicity to the ridiculous defence of sex games going wrong, and it also reminds women to trust their instincts with the weirdos.
