To be raging Grace Millane’s Murderer’s name is suppressed

MabelMoo23 · 22/11/2019 10:12

I know his name - it’s not hard to find - but it’s been legally suppressed until at least 2021

Grace has had her private life dragged through the mud, her parents had to hear accounts of her sex life - which let’s face it came from his account and his defence team.

And he gets his identity protected and the reason for it????

I’m not going to name him as I don’t want this post deleted, but apparently there are times in NZ law that identity can be protected because revealing it can affect other outcomes

Beautiful Grace, rest in peace

My anger is this she gets the scrutiny and private life dragged through the mud and he’s protected

Although I appreciate if it’s to protect other cases from being prejudiced then it’s understandable

I think the new 'sex game gone wrong' free pass given to men is a really insidious and worrying development.

The judge in this case has clarified that you cannot consent to your own death.

How can we challenge this defence here?

Blackopal · 22/11/2019 10:36

Apologies, in the UK..

lboogy · 22/11/2019 10:37

Why do you need to know his name? Sounds like weird morbid curiously. Unless you personally have encountered him and think you can be of help to his victim then YABU

Breathlessness · 22/11/2019 10:39

I feel so sorry for her parents. Losing their daughter in such a horrific way and then having to sit through a trial where the defence tried to claim she was partly responsible for her own death.

The protection will be removed and he will be named. It has already come out that he ‘has history of telling exaggerated stories and lies – including that he had cancer, was a professional athlete, and worked as an “oil manager” off-shore.’ [The Guardian]

Blackopal · 22/11/2019 10:39

Because it is such an unequal response.

The woman's name is out there, her family are exposed.
Sexual history played out in detail.
Her death in the public realm, the way her body treated in the public realm.

And the man who did this to her? Name withheld.

PineappleDanish · 22/11/2019 10:40

I think it probably is to increase the chances of charging him with other stuff too.

I remember at the time they named him when he was arrested, and were appealing for him to come forward initially. Then that changed. Problem is with the internet that his name is easily found. And NZ law only applies within NZ - the BBC could name him should they wish to do so as they are not subject to NZ law. But have obviously decided not to.

GCAcademic · 22/11/2019 10:41

How can we challenge this defence here?

This is what we should be chanelling our energy into rather than wasting it in outrage towards a system that has actually done what it is supposed to. Harriet Harman is trying to bring forward changes to the system to address these failings. But too many murdered women in the UK (and their families) have not had justice, and have had to watch as their depraved killers walked free or were handed a minimal sentence.

Herocomplex · 22/11/2019 10:41

The judge asked the UK press to stop naming him.

NaturalBornWoman · 22/11/2019 10:42

No one needs to know his name but there is a perfectly valid question around him having the protection of anonymity whilst her reputation has been dragged through the sewer. Nothing to do with morbid curiosity.

Trewser · 22/11/2019 10:42

I'm just relieved it was ruled as murder. That poor girl and her family. Who cares what his name is?

spacepyramid · 22/11/2019 10:42

His name is still on UK press websites so they didn't take any notice.

Herocomplex · 22/11/2019 10:47

It’s an extension of the ‘she was asking for it’ defence which no longer had as much power as it did.

MabelMoo23 · 22/11/2019 10:47

I’ve already said that my anger is how unequal it is. That is the reason for my post.

I don’t need to know his name. It’s about how everything about Grace was laid bare to the world, to dissect and speculate and judge (because horrendously people will have done!) and his name is withheld

SaveKevin · 22/11/2019 10:48

I am so relieved he got found guilty - I wouldn’t be so convinced in this country.

I can only presume it’s for a bloody good reason that his names not been published now.
New Zealand have dealt with this so well.

The rough sex excuse seems to give accused an excuse to do what the fuck they like and get away with it.
Porn is filled with it, and it must make girls feel it’s expected in every encounter. Whilst she may consent to some she didn’t consent to death.

Uncompromisingwoman · 22/11/2019 10:49

We all need to support this campaign:

wecantconsenttothis.uk/

There are far too many people advocating for extreme porn and these women are the casualties of this.

Marnie76 · 22/11/2019 10:50

As people have already said, it’s not to protect him it’s to ensure future court cases against him aren’t put in jeopardy. It’s not that hard to understand.

Babyroobs · 22/11/2019 10:51

YANBU. Her poor family.

Emeraldshamrock · 22/11/2019 10:52

Yanbu. The dick bastard. At least his name made it into the media.
The poor girl how her life, her business and his lies were portrayed. Sad
All murders found guilty should be named.
Those under 16 should be named on their 16th birthday.
There is a case in Ireland Ana Kriegel the poor girl 13 beaten to death raped and abandoned.
Her 13 yo murderers have the choice of a new ID on release.
It is a disgrace especially boy A the evil bastard. If someone's DD unknowingly got with him.

astralweaks · 22/11/2019 10:53

OP

That is the law in NZ. It is being observed.

Herocomplex · 22/11/2019 10:53

Thank you for sharing that @Uncompromisingwoman seeing that list of murdered women is just terrible.

Emeraldshamrock · 22/11/2019 10:56

There are far too many people advocating for extreme porn and these women are the casualties of this
In the Ana Kriegel murder boy A had tons of violent choking porn, animal porn, rape scenes from the dark web.

EntropyRising · 22/11/2019 10:56

A lot of murderers on the sicker end of the spectrum kill for the notoriety, though. I'm not sure if this is a matter of discussion in the UK but it certainly is in the USA.

But, godspeed to the beautiful Grace and my thoughts are with her family. Such a tragedy.

cultkid · 22/11/2019 10:57

I want to know too
It's outrageous

antisupermum · 22/11/2019 10:58

I agree with you wholeheartedly. The victims' name can be dragged through the mud yet his has to be protected. It's a disgrace. At least Grace has some justice now, although it's of course nowhere near enough.
