To think three 14 inch pizzas is too much between 5?

DH has asked me to pick up pizza for dinner. There are 5 of us (4 adults and one child) and he's asked me to get three 14 inch ones. AIBU to think this is way too much pizza for the 5 of us?? I get him wanting me to get 3 due to different preferences but surely we could just get 3 10 inch pizzas?

What would you get for 5 people if it was a choice of 10 inch or 14 inch?

What's boring about eating a normal serving of food?

Living your life according to made up portion sizes on the back of packets sounds pretty boring to me. Portion sizes are made up by companies so they can say their food is healthy or that it fits into the category of "snack" for example - that's it.

And we wonder why there is an obesity epidemic in this country. A large Dominos pizza is about 14 inches and a portion of that recommended for an adult would be roughly a quarter.

We have an obesity epidemic because of people eating crap all the time, drinking too much and not taking enough exercise. Not because of the occasional takeaway pizza.

I would open a vein if I felt the need to check the recommended portion size before treating myself to the odd pizza.

ThatsMeInTheSpotlight · 22/11/2019 08:51

Why would it be wasted? You can eat pizza the next day and if you don't like day-old pizza, give it to your friends to take home.

Dollywilde · 22/11/2019 08:52

My rule at home is that I can eat whatever I like as long as half of my plate is vegetables. So if we were doing pizza night I’d have half a plate of salad and maybe half a 14 inch or 3/4s of a 10 inch. Works for me Smile On that basis I’d say 3 x 10 inchers would just cover the adults so 3 x 14 inchers is about right when you factor in your daughter and the desire to over cater so it doesn’t run out.

Boysey45 · 22/11/2019 08:57

Two of us shared a 10" with a side salad for lunch and that was enough.
The other person also had a sausage roll.

Pukkatea · 22/11/2019 09:05

I ate a 20 inch pizza for dinner last Saturday and I weigh 8 stone, so screw your obesity crisis Smile

lynsey91 · 22/11/2019 09:06

It always surprises me that one person can eat a whole large pizza. I think me and DH are both big eaters but we always share one and quite often can't manage it all. That's often with no sides or sometimes with maybe coleslaw.

Tminus3days · 22/11/2019 09:08

Be the better woman, OP. Just because your friends are rubbish hosts doesn’t mean you have to be too!

I don't understand this. If my friends bought one 14 inch pizza between the 3 of us and there's only one extra adult (DH) and a 7 year old, how is it not overkill to get an extra two 14 inch pizzas?

cocomelon23 · 22/11/2019 09:08

For me that would be way too much. No wonder we have an obesity crisis! Wow!

Countryescape · 22/11/2019 09:09

Would hardly be wnough

It's not overkill because if there's any left over, you just eat it for lunch the next day. It's not as though leftovers are going to be binned and the money wasted. You just eat the food another time.

Instatwat · 22/11/2019 09:11

There seems to be a competitive attitude over small appetites on this site. 4 adults and a child could easily demolish 3x14” pizzas in my house.

4merlyknownasSHD · 22/11/2019 09:13

If you are worried about how many slices you can eat, watch .

Jinxed2 · 22/11/2019 09:13

We usually get 2 12 inch between 2 adults 3 kids. And some chips.

Vegheaven · 22/11/2019 09:19

Calorie counting when you are having friends over for dinner is not right. Feed people with a generous heart or don't bother and go to a restaurant.

TreestumpsAndTrampolines · 22/11/2019 09:20

I think he's bang on - we get a 16" between me and two kids so that's an area of about 192sq., of which I have 80, so for 5 people that would mean that you'd want roughly 400. 3 14 inchers is 450sq - so I'd say that actually you might also want a couple of sides depending on the relative appetites involved.

StarlingsInSummer · 22/11/2019 09:23

Isn’t 14 inch a small? A large is 18 inches right? My DH accidentally ordered a small tonight, it would have suited 1 person really. Luckily he also ordered two more 18 inch, or the three of us may have starved!

I've got to say, I couldn't really picture what an 18in pizza would look like, so I googled and found that one 18in pizza is actually bigger than two 12in pizzas!

Because your friends under-cater.

TheHootiestOwl · 22/11/2019 09:34

This reminds of the thread where someone posted that 1 large pizza was enough for 2 adults and 3 teenagers if you bulk it out with coleslaw. I still think that’s unreasonable.l!

Scarlettpixie · 22/11/2019 09:36

I think he has it right. If there are leftovers that’s great (but there probably won’t be. 3 10” ones is no way enough for 5.

Does it matter if it is? I'd rather have too much than too little when I'm hosting.

Loopytiles · 22/11/2019 09:44

It’s not “overkill”, and if you have leftovers that’s fine!

YABU!

Tminus3days · 22/11/2019 09:45

My point was just that we would essentially be buying two 14 inch pizzas for DH and DSD - so one each since my friends and I typically share one 14 inch pizza.

Anyway, they can just have the leftovers for lunch / dinner tomorrow. I personally won't eat pizza two days in a row but only because it disagrees with me so I try to limit my intake (I have IBS).

It's better to over-cater rather than under-cater if you have people coming round. It's not really fair to skimp on food so that each ends up with a small portion. They might have eaten next to nothing all day. They might have a big appetite. It's up to each individual to decide how much they wish to eat. They can take leftovers home or you can eat them the next day.

For those shouting "obesity crisis" - this isn't why there is an obesity crisis. There are all kinds of factors contributing to that. Overdoing the takeaway pizza once in a while is not going to make someone obese - not exercising at all, drinking too much alcohol and/or soft drinks, too many calories every day, unhealthy food choices on a daily basis over a long period of time - these make people obese.

stucknoue · 22/11/2019 09:46

I buy 3 large dominos pizzas (think they are 13 inch) between 3 people (hangs head in shame). 3 for 5 people isn't that much
