To think three 14 inch pizzas is too much between 5?

DH has asked me to pick up pizza for dinner. There are 5 of us (4 adults and one child) and he's asked me to get three 14 inch ones. AIBU to think this is way too much pizza for the 5 of us?? I get him wanting me to get 3 due to different preferences but surely we could just get 3 10 inch pizzas?

What would you get for 5 people if it was a choice of 10 inch or 14 inch?

And we wonder why there is an obesity epidemic in this country.

A large Dominos pizza is about 14 inches and a portion of that recommended for an adult would be roughly a quarter.

namechangenumber2 · 22/11/2019 08:08

It would depend on the adults appetite really!

When we order a dominos, we get two large pizzas ( 18 inch?), one small ( 10 inch?) garlic bread x2 and potato wedges.

This feeds DH and I, 16 year old dustbin and an 11 year old. Usually there's 2/3 slices left over for breakfast...

ManiacalLapwing · 22/11/2019 08:09

Either three 10 inch or three 14 inch would be fine, depending on how much you wanted left over, no wrong answer.

LagunaBubbles · 22/11/2019 08:09

think the mythical mumsnet chicken (that feeds 4 people for a month) is going to be replaced by the mumsnet pizza slice....

Haha Grin

ChanklyBore · 22/11/2019 08:09

The place we order from makes 7,10 and 14 inch pizzas, and we love a good pizza. When we are feeding four of us - two adults one teen and one child - we order 3x10 inch. Just two adults and we order either 2x10 inch or 3x7 inch - we prefer thin pizzas and rarely order sides. This isn’t competitive eating, all the pizza place deals are set up that way - (eg family meal deal is 2x10 inch, 1xgarlic bread and a portion of chips, 3x 7 inch pizzas is on a deal, etc)

OMGshefoundmeout · 22/11/2019 08:17

It doesn’t sound a lot to me and I’m not a big eater either. And I would always overorder than under order on takeaways, it never goes to waste but Is reheated for lunch (or breakfast) the next day.

JeezyPeeps · 22/11/2019 08:17

goodcalculators.com/pizza-calculator/

Here you go!

This suggests 2 x 14 inch pizzas for 5 people, at an average 1,024 calories per person! (based on pepperoni pizza and a regular crust), or 3 if its a thin crust at 1,200 calories per person.

Tminus3days · 22/11/2019 08:18

Not sure why this has been brought up as an obesity thing? I'm not sure there are many (/ any) of us on this thread saying we eat pizza every day. It's a treat for us.

A "portion" of Kelloggs cornflakes is 30g, you weigh that out in a bowl and tell me how filling you think that would be for a 6'3" rugby build man like my Dh, his Mum was 5'2" and she would find that fine. A portion is a guide, some people need more, some less.

Pizza is ridiculously calorific but you can stop from eating a whole pizza and have leftovers.

heartsonacake · 22/11/2019 08:20

YABU. I would say each person should have an individual pizza each; three between five isn’t a lot even at 14inch.

IceBearRocks · 22/11/2019 08:27

My two kids 8 and 12 year a 14 inch pizza between them. My DH eats a 14 inch to himself with 2 slices leftover for lunch the following day !
I dont think it's enough.

dottiedodah · 22/11/2019 08:28

I think this sounds about right really . 10 " pizzas would be too small ,but I think 18" sounds massive ! If everyone has one each and a couple of slices are left over all good for the next days lunch.

category12 · 22/11/2019 08:28

Better to have too much, assuming the two other adults are guests, than too little. If you have leftovers, that's lunch sorted.

adaline · 22/11/2019 08:29

A large Dominos pizza is about 14 inches and a portion of that recommended for an adult would be roughly a quarter.

Goodness me, what a boring way to live your life!

Tminus3days · 22/11/2019 08:30

@heartsonacake do you mean five 14 inch pizzas?

GiveHerHellFromUs · 22/11/2019 08:34

I'd get the 3 pizzas and some wedges and mozzarella sticks personally Grin

Tminus3days · 22/11/2019 08:36

Ooh mozzarella sticks sound good @GiveHerHellFromUs

What size is the xxl papa Johns. Ours does an offer so u get 3 for £33. 2 large alone would be nearly that.
We get it when dsd here for a treat. 2 adults 2 kids.. Although there's generally. Loads left for dh to take to workm

MikeUniformMike · 22/11/2019 08:38

A pizza each is a whole day's worth of calories in one meal.

Catsandchardonnay · 22/11/2019 08:39

That wouldn’t be enough in this house OP and there’s only 4 of us Grin

Come back later and update us with how much is left over. Bet it’s none!

FoamingAtTheUterus · 22/11/2019 08:40

Feeling the rage over the time I hoarded some breakfast pizza by foregoing a few slices but dp got there first and stole it.

It was only about ten years ago, not that I'm one to bear a grudge at all.

AlmostChristmas2019 · 22/11/2019 08:41

We tend to get 12" pizzas (=Dominos medium), usually one per person and anything between 1-2 slices to half the pizza is left over for the next day.

Some friends of ours are able to finish that on their own but most have roughly the same amount left as us (nothing is wasted, we either share or people take their left over pizzas home if they live close by).

Three 14" pizzas between 4 adults and a child would mean left-overs for the next day.

And now i want pizza for breakfast...

ManiacalLapwing · 22/11/2019 08:42

Goodness me, what a boring way to live your life! What's boring about eating a normal serving of food? Eating a whole pizza with no sides is more boring. For me it's about enjoying different tastes.

A 14 inch pizza is about double the size of a 10 inch one, so a quarter of the first, half of the second is about right.

HandsOffMyRights · 22/11/2019 08:44

So that's 8.4 inches per person.
Not enough!
Can't bear under catering or being hungry as a guest.

My MIL does this and I've had to take extra food in the past!

PineappleDanish · 22/11/2019 08:46

I would understand trying to get the portion sizes bang on with no leftovers if it was for something which isn't easily stored and reheated.

But pizza reheated in the oven the next day is really tasty. Leftovers rock.
