To think it's time the Queen passed the throne to Charles?

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 18/11/2019 18:48

Given recent events concerning Prince Andrew, and the ensuing scandal, is it time for Charles to take over as King now? The Queen has been dedicated all her life to her civil duties, and continues to perform them well, but as she and the DOE are getting older, it appears her/their ability to control situations with some of the other members of the royal family is waning.

It could be argued that both Harry and Meghan and now Prince Andrew seem to be ignoring advice, unwisely sharing their grievances with the media and striking out on their own with the inevitable backlash (I am referring to interviews, not libel actions). Anecdotally, more and more people are saying it's time to get rid of the royal institution.

If Charles were to become King, it is probable that he would streamline the RF to just William and his heirs and make some needed adjustments, such a move might renew interest in the RF, increase their popularity and ensure their continuance as Charles is more in touch with the mood of the nation.

Also just read this provocative Daily Mail article,

Headline: 'The Queen 'backs' Prince Andrew and 'believes him 100 per cent'

www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-7698021/Queen-goes-horse-ride-Windsor-Castle-grounds-days-Prince-Andrews-car-crash-interview.html

Do think something has to change.

Yeah love people wanting to skip Charles, it's a heredity monarchy you don't get to choose, if you don't like it's get rid of the lot.

BennyTheBall · 18/11/2019 21:55

I’m not a monarchist by any stretch, but I’d love to see Queen Camilla (at least I’d hope the tabloids will call her this), just to annoy those Diana fanatics that are still about.

HairyToity · 18/11/2019 21:57

I don't see the need for a monarchy. If I got a vote it would always be for a Republic.

Oakmaiden · 18/11/2019 21:59

I dunno.

I mean - no, I don't think she should abdicate at all, but this Prince Andrew thing... I don't see how we can "punish" someone who hasn't been found guilty of anything at this point in time. Other than of being a prat. If the situation changes, then of course it everything else changes too, but at the moment all (I think) we know is that he was friends with a man who was definitely a criminal. that he remained being friends despite finding out he was a criminal, and that he has been accused of having sex with someone young (but not illegally young - she was over the age of consent in the places it happened) and that she says she was coerced. There is not, that I am aware, any evidence that it happened or that (if it did) he was aware she was coerced.

That said, he is clearly as seedy as fuck. But I don't see why the queen should at this stage be forced to "renounce" either him or her throne because of it... As I said, if more evidence comes to light, the the situation changes...

WeshMaGueule · 18/11/2019 22:07

Well frankly if some talentless prat is living the life of Reilly on the taxpayer's dime, then the very fucking least they can do is not use that money hang out with convicted paedophiles. Exercise some fucking judgement, man.

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 18/11/2019 22:31

To all the people saying we should ditch the monarchy completely....do you know how much money having a monarchy brings into the economy

Bingo!

MarianaMoatedGrange · 18/11/2019 22:34

Bingo!
Grin

thetwinkletoescollective · 18/11/2019 22:34

Surely after QEll does that has to be the end. Finish it on a high.

It is antiquated. It was for another age. Let’s us resign it to nostalgia.

I love The Crown but it reminds me that we are/and have been paying for years for people to stand around. Many of them for many years.

Let them pay for their own houses and renovations and if they can’t afford it they can sell a few paintings.

I hate the class system and that because some said they were in charge that has become a thing. I do not want to be ruled over....

And breathe ... I feel better for getting that out!

thetwinkletoescollective · 18/11/2019 22:37

Oh and you think people would stop coming just because we stopped paying them? Tourists would still come and visit Buckingham palace - they want the myth - just they would pay the Royals directly through entrance fees and we could keep our money.

7Days · 18/11/2019 22:43

I think the British have enough on their plates right now without another divisive shake up.

AlternativePerspective · 18/11/2019 22:47

I love the suggestion that a president elected by the people would somehow be better because the people would have the say.

Because that’s worked so well over the past 3.5 years.... Hmm And when Boris Johnson is voted back in in three weeks time then the will of the people will be done.

AdaColeman · 18/11/2019 22:54

Charles has his own history of friendships with men of dubious morals, such as Jimmy Savile and (Bishop) Peter Ball, so I don't see that he would be a better choice for monarch than the present Queen.

Iwantacookie · 18/11/2019 23:04

I like having the queen. However it might just because that's all I've known. Would anything really change when charles becomes king?
I can see why she hasn't done anything about Andrew yet as nothing has been proven but I agree with a pp hes shady as fuck and not someone I would associate with the RF.

CareOfPunts · 18/11/2019 23:05

You don’t just “give up” being the monarch. It’s not like jacking in a job. She’s already increasingly handing over her duties to Charles, in preparation for when she dies anyway

WagtailRobin · 18/11/2019 23:08

I think it's time for the ordinary British people in your country to abolish the entire monarchy. I think the whole thing is vile, distasteful and it sickens me to my stomach, the privilege of a select few!

scousadelic · 18/11/2019 23:18

I think Charles would look after his own and he has hardly shown himself to be moral and upstanding (think of how he treated Diana, friendship with Saville, etc). I think the longer he has to wait so the shorter his reign will be and the better for the country.
The only thing worse would be a President, imagine Tony Blair, David Cameron or Boris Johnson in the role and you suddenly appreciate the royals!

derxa · 18/11/2019 23:44

.

beminetonight · 18/11/2019 23:54

Harry has been distancing himself from the family for some time. We may have found the real reason for his rift with William.

TheDarkPassenger · 18/11/2019 23:59

I agree with everything you’ve said, I haven’t read the comments yet but I’m guessing it’s gone down like a sack of shit in here?

BigChocFrenzy · 19/11/2019 00:01

"How are Meghan/Harry comparable to Andrew. Please expand
Oversharing with the media."

"Oversharing with the media" I couldn't care less about

It's "Oversharing" with a convicted sex offender that I find unacceptable

If the monarchy stays, then at least we should have a Royal Code of Conduct, like the civil service or military.
PA has shown we can't rely on them following rules of common sense or decency

General rule of "don't damage the reputation of the country" and "don't abuse your position"
also specific rules
e.g.
not associating with convicted felons
checking they are not sleeping with trafficked victims
checking ages if they must sleep with people so near the legal limit in any country
No driving once they become a danger due to age / incapacity

Twofurrycatsagain · 19/11/2019 00:10

I don't think the queen will abdicate. British monarches generally don't (Edward being an exception due to wanting to marry not age) retire, unlike Spain or the Netherlands. It could be that Charles becomes a regent.

BigChocFrenzy · 19/11/2019 01:07

Even possible that Charles might predecease the Queen

WeshMaGueule · 19/11/2019 06:37

Because that’s worked so well over the past 3.5 years....

Well, neither Theresa May nor Boris Johnson were voted in on a popular mandate. If you're arguing for electoral reform as well as the abolition of the monarchy, I'm right behind you.

BahHumbugAnus · 19/11/2019 06:49

Before Charles takes over there should be a referendum. He is not well liked and many of us are sick of the lot of them. We have people living on the streets, children in poverty and then others being driven in Cinderella like carriages made out of gold. It's not acceptable.

TheGirlFromStoryville · 19/11/2019 07:00

Would those in favour of the system of hereditary Monarchy still support it if Andrew was first born rather than Charlie?

It is, when one thinks about it, a quite ridiculous concept. For those who say it should skip Charlie and go straight to PW, that defeats the whole point of it.
