To think it's time the Queen passed the throne to Charles?

Given recent events concerning Prince Andrew, and the ensuing scandal, is it time for Charles to take over as King now? The Queen has been dedicated all her life to her civil duties, and continues to perform them well, but as she and the DOE are getting older, it appears her/their ability to control situations with some of the other members of the royal family is waning.

It could be argued that both Harry and Meghan and now Prince Andrew seem to be ignoring advice, unwisely sharing their grievances with the media and striking out on their own with the inevitable backlash (I am referring to interviews, not libel actions). Anecdotally, more and more people are saying it's time to get rid of the royal institution.

If Charles were to become King, it is probable that he would streamline the RF to just William and his heirs and make some needed adjustments, such a move might renew interest in the RF, increase their popularity and ensure their continuance as Charles is more in touch with the mood of the nation.

Also just read this provocative Daily Mail article,

Headline: 'The Queen 'backs' Prince Andrew and 'believes him 100 per cent'

Do think something has to change.

Why would excluding the likes of the hardworking Princess Anne and Sophie Wessex, plus the Dukes of Glos and Kent help? They carry out a lot of duties and quietly get on with it.

Abraid2 · 22/11/2019 12:20

His mum tried to show him a little of what life really was like
Because as an aristocrat raised in a stately home and marrying into the RF at 19, she really understood life for most of us?

Yes, Diana was truly a working class hero Grin

Diana was as privileged and out of touch as the rest.

I am horrified that the RF are making money from their "charitable" projects. Andrew has an entire staff financed courtesy of mumsy from the duchy of Lancaster, in addition he has numerous corporate sponsors for pitch at the palace so altogether he has no costs but somehow seems to think that he should be entitled to 2% of the future profits from those who receive funding. This is Andrew's main "charity", it is what apparently he spends most of his time on. I am fed up with reading the RF defenders on MN droning on about all their charitable work, they are a disgrace. God knows what the others are up to.

I am reporting pitch at the palace to the FCA, it's my area so I can draft something specific that they can't ignore.

Angela9 · 22/11/2019 12:46

I think the royal line should end with her

MangoFeverDream · 23/11/2019 05:16

the palace scares me. The American reporter who complained her 2016 expose on Epstein was spiked (on hot mic) mentioned that the palace had “a million ways to get you” (also they were afraid they wouldn’t be able to interview Will and Kate if they went ahead with the story 🤷‍♀️)

That the palace thinks they can threaten American broadcasters just highlights their extreme arrogance.

Selling the 'royal name' is what Andrew, Fergie, Sophie and Edward were good at - but as you say, who knows what the others are up to.

StoneofDestiny · 23/11/2019 07:07

the oh so 'charitable' work of the royal family.....

Pitch@Palace allows Andrew to make money out of tech deals. He is entitled to a 2% share of any investment deal for three years from the Dragons’ Den-style programme

It has emerged that his downfall also threatens the Queen with a big tax bill. David McClure, author of Royal Legacy, an investigation into the House of Windsor’s finances, said the Queen would no longer be able to write off the estimated £1million-a-year cost of running the Duke’s office as a business expense as he no longer has an official royal role

Given that she's another "outsider", this is why I've always been surprised that Sophie's still there, enjoying one of the largest homes of any of the Queen's kids. After all she comes from a relatively modest background and could presumably have been squashed quite easily

I wonder how much of it amounts to paying her to keep Edward's activities within the family ...

Sophie is the one that apparently gets on best with the Queen. Partly because she held her hands up and said “I fucked up” and then hasn’t done it again.

The Queen visited her in hospital after the birth of Louise which is highly unusual. Although, that might be partly because faffing over security issues and sending police first instead of ambulance almost killed her!

Her father is also always invited for Christmas on the years he’s not with her brother, and has been every year since her mother died.

Yes, I'd heard about the hospital visit and dad coming for Christmas and the bit quoted above could be right, but I confess it's got to the point where it seems risky to assume anything with this lot

The whole ethos just appears so deceitful that, no matter what's said and done, my first thought tends to be "what are they hiding?" Sad

StoneofDestiny · 23/11/2019 21:17

“Andrew is a bit of a plonker, everybody knows that,” said one source close to the palace. “There’s no way he should have been allowed to do that interview. They should have just sent him off to Australia. That would have been a bloody good idea. Out of sight, out of mind" (Guardian quote)

Best Aussies would love that!

Very true

It does seem to be genuine. They are said to share a love of military history and Sophie and her children are often seen rising from the Queen’s stables at Windsor

She obviously trusts her somewhat as Edward and Sophie are the ones who get tasked with the abroad royal weddings

Defenbaker · 24/11/2019 00:40

The Queen has done a good job for many years, and seems to believe that it's her duty to continue until she dies. I think she has more than done her duty, and deserves to retire. Also, Prince Philip is older and may not be around much longer, so maybe it's time for her to spend more time with him.

I'm unsure whether Prince Charles would be a good king, or whether we should abolish the monarchy altogether once the Queen dies. Whatever happens, I think the Queen should step down soon, and give Charles the chance to show what he's made of. Maybe Charles would slim down the RF 'firm' and modernise it to fit the 21st century, then maybe there could still be a place for the RF in the modern world, but if not then maybe a referendum should happen, to give people a say.

Shinnoo · 24/11/2019 00:43

I am desperate to see the back of the lot of them.

Why the fuck are we paying for 'security everywhere' when pa goes for a walk in a park with a pedophile??

JemimaTab · 24/11/2019 00:58

I suspect that a real no-holds-barred forensic delve into the RF’s finances would uncover a huge amount of murky stuff. Kickbacks, in a lot of cases (PA is probably a case in point here - that percentage he is apparently getting from Pitch@Palace initiatives might explain why he is so keen to keep hold of it). Cash-for-access under the guise of “sponsorship” or similar. Dodgy stuff such as the sale of Sunninghill Park to a Kazakh oligarch for several millions over the asking price . Not to mention all the freebies - for example, all those extravagant foreign holidays in someone else’s holiday home (do they ever pay for themselves? I doubt it), all the times the Cambridges have borrowed the Duke of Westminster’s private jet, etc. They have a public role, and receive public money (including through protection costs), but are somehow not subject to the appropriate level of public scrutiny / openness.

JemimaTab · 24/11/2019 01:13

Their individual “charitable trusts” could also do with looking at. Andrew’s charitable trust is the main (possibly sole) shareholder in Pitch@Palace from what I can see. (I believe Pitch@Palace is a “community interest company” rather than a charity as such). But I recall reading somewhere in the last few days that Andrew’s charitable trust in fact spends very little in terms of actual charitable giving.

Shinnoo · 24/11/2019 14:50

I think there needs to be a thorough investigation into the financial propriety of the royal family.

And then get rid of the greedy nepotistic fuckers.

Nixby3 · 24/11/2019 18:32

No she shouldn't abdicate. There is alot of respect for the queen. When she passes there won't be the same warmth/respect for the RF.

HeresMe · 24/11/2019 20:34

*Yes, Diana was truly a working class hero grin

She wasn't the Saint or victim people made her out to be. She really played the media lots and lots, and the grief was embarrassing.

Once queen dies get rid of lot.
