To think it's time the Queen passed the throne to Charles?

Given recent events concerning Prince Andrew, and the ensuing scandal, is it time for Charles to take over as King now? The Queen has been dedicated all her life to her civil duties, and continues to perform them well, but as she and the DOE are getting older, it appears her/their ability to control situations with some of the other members of the royal family is waning.

It could be argued that both Harry and Meghan and now Prince Andrew seem to be ignoring advice, unwisely sharing their grievances with the media and striking out on their own with the inevitable backlash (I am referring to interviews, not libel actions). Anecdotally, more and more people are saying it's time to get rid of the royal institution.

If Charles were to become King, it is probable that he would streamline the RF to just William and his heirs and make some needed adjustments, such a move might renew interest in the RF, increase their popularity and ensure their continuance as Charles is more in touch with the mood of the nation.

Also just read this provocative Daily Mail article,

Headline: 'The Queen 'backs' Prince Andrew and 'believes him 100 per cent'

Do think something has to change.

Time to get rid of them all for good. This anachronistic pantomime where one family are elevated above all others and allowed to dip into the public purse and live to embarrassing excess has no place in a 21 Century democracy.
Nothing holds these people to account.
If anybody else had spoken or behaved the way Philip has done in public they have been suspended or sacked, as would Andrew. But wait - they can't be sacked because they don't have a job! Yet we still pay them - to live better than any of us do.

StoneofDestiny · 19/11/2019 07:21

I'm clearly a Republican, but it is unbelievable that the media guns have been pointed at Megan as being extravagant or disrespectful to 'tradition' blah blah.
Ye gods - look at the antics and spending habits of the long time members of the royal family!

Venger · 19/11/2019 07:32

Before Charles takes over there should be a referendum

I don't think the country is quite ready for another referendum based on the debacle that was the last one.

KittenLedWeaning · 19/11/2019 07:48

Even possible that Charles might predecease the Queen

Yes, that's quite possible. The Queen Mother lived to over 100 with a relatively unhealthy lifestyle.

ednclouda · 19/11/2019 08:03

no no no Charles is an Idiot look at his gin guzzling wife......so no way Give it to Wills first

mrsjg · 19/11/2019 08:15

I don't think Prince William would do any better. His mum tried to show him a little of what life really was like but after her death he was sucked back into the old ways of the RF with a vengeance.

The monarchy should stop after the Queen dies.

NameChangeNugget · 19/11/2019 08:47

There should be a stripped back version of the RF when the Queen goes. There really is no need for the likes of Andrew’s children to have royal status.

Purely on an economic basis, I’d keep the royal family. I’d much rather have one of them as head of state as opposed to a clown like Swinson or Corbyn

Unlikely, though. The Queen’s 93, eight years younger than the QM was when she died. Charles is 71, by that logic he could have another 30 years.

cakeisalwaystheanswer · 19/11/2019 10:23

Enough of them all.

As a gesture of goodwill make Anne the first President for a fixed term and then that is the end of this seething bunch of workshy parasites.

lubeybooby · 19/11/2019 10:29

No way. No King Charles for as long as possible.

noodlenosefraggle · 19/11/2019 12:38

If we had a Ireland style republic, we would have exactly the same system as we have now. It wouldn't be 'president Blair' because they'd still want to be the one with the power- Prime Minister. Not the waving, shaking hands person that the monarch has with no power whatsoever. The difference is that if we ended up with President Charles and he turned out to be a nasty piece of work, we could choose someone else
We were one decision away from having a vain, nazi sympathiser on the throne during the War. I don't know why people think William will be better than Charles. If you don't want Charles, get rid of them all and elect a ceremonial head of state. Then we can choose someone who has achieved

KittenLedWeaning · 19/11/2019 12:46

It's possible - the D of E is doing well; but other males in the family haven't been as long-lived so I suppose it depends what C. has inherited. He's quite health-conscious by all accounts, which should help.

I don't think Charles predeceasing the Queen would help the cause of abolishing the monarchy at all, because so many people bleat on about wanting the throne to pass straight to William anyway. If anything, we'd stand more chance of increasing support for this if the relatively unpopular Charles ascended sooner rather than later.

noodlenosefraggle · 19/11/2019 12:46

something and vote for someone else if they turn out to be useless. At the very least slim them down drastically so Charlotte and Louis are brought up from a young age knowing they have to make their own way and will not be required to do Royal duties. I suspect Charles has made everyone aware this is what he wants to do, hence baby Archie not having a title.

KittenLedWeaning · 19/11/2019 12:53

It's driven by constitutional tradition, rather than personal choice. Technically, Charlotte and Louis shouldn't have a HRH either, as only the first born of the Prince of Wales's son should be a HRH but the Queen made an exception in anticipation of Charles's ascension.

SarahNade · 19/11/2019 13:38

No. Pass it to William. Not Charles. (although I know they've already confirmed Charles as successor)

Drabarni · 19/11/2019 13:40

I don't think there's a need for her to abdicate, why should she, it's her bloody job until she dies.
They don't just retire, YABU

LaurieMarlow · 19/11/2019 13:44

No. Pass it to William. Not Charles. (although I know they've already confirmed Charles as successor)

The whole damn point of the monarchy is that you get whoever's next in succession. No picking and choosing.

CareOfPunts · 19/11/2019 14:12

No. Pass it to William. Not Charles. (although I know they've already confirmed Charles as successor)

No one has “confirmed Charles as successor”. His place in the line of succession was set from the moment of his birth.

As the queen can’t just “give up” her role, neither can Charles be skipped and it “given” to William.

Some people really don’t have a clue how it all works, do they?

Bluntness100 · 19/11/2019 14:27

From what I understand, William doesn't wish it yet, and not for a long time. He wants the kids to grow up before he becomes king.

Camilla also seemingly is dreading it, so I suspect Charles would happily forego if WILLIAM wanted it, but Charles will do it when the time comes to meet Williams wishes.

I'm surprised people simply assume William is gagging to be king. The truth is far from it.

LaurieMarlow · 19/11/2019 14:32

Some people really don’t have a clue how it all works, do they?

I find, oddly, that it’s the people most enthusiastic about it that know the least.

noodlenosefraggle · 19/11/2019 14:42

Too many Disney films I think. That and that we haven't had to witness the succession for 60+ years.

GrumpyHoonMain · 19/11/2019 14:43

Charles’ scandal is probably coming. That’s why I feel like she has delayed so long already and why Prince William / Kate are being pushed more into the limelight.

noodlenosefraggle · 19/11/2019 14:47

If they're all 'dreading it's as they claim, then wed be doing them a favour getting rid. They would hardly be in penury. They would live happily ever after as minor celebs until people lost interest. They wont though, because the whole purpose of the Royal Family is to preserve their own position and that of their heirs. God knows if they had to live on their own wits they wouldn't get very far.

QueenOfTheAndals · 19/11/2019 14:48

Charles' scandal is coming? How much more scandalous can it get??

QueenOfTheAndals · 19/11/2019 14:49

Compared to the Diana/Camilla/Tampaxgate years, that is.
