To think it's time the Queen passed the throne to Charles?

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 18/11/2019 18:48

Given recent events concerning Prince Andrew, and the ensuing scandal, is it time for Charles to take over as King now? The Queen has been dedicated all her life to her civil duties, and continues to perform them well, but as she and the DOE are getting older, it appears her/their ability to control situations with some of the other members of the royal family is waning.

It could be argued that both Harry and Meghan and now Prince Andrew seem to be ignoring advice, unwisely sharing their grievances with the media and striking out on their own with the inevitable backlash (I am referring to interviews, not libel actions). Anecdotally, more and more people are saying it's time to get rid of the royal institution.

If Charles were to become King, it is probable that he would streamline the RF to just William and his heirs and make some needed adjustments, such a move might renew interest in the RF, increase their popularity and ensure their continuance as Charles is more in touch with the mood of the nation.

Also just read this provocative Daily Mail article,

Headline: 'The Queen 'backs' Prince Andrew and 'believes him 100 per cent'

Do think something has to change.

I think she’s in it till death.

I’d like to see them scaled right back once she’s dead. Ideally, I’d like to see the monarchy abolished.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 18/11/2019 19:19

How are Meghan/Harry comparable to Andrew. Please expand

Oversharing with the media.

It's all good people saying the Queen should hang in there, but do you not think something has to change sooner rather than later? The Queen mother lived to 101, and that's with having been a smoker. Sure Charles can takeover a lot of duties, but he can't really make important drastic changes.

And yes, I do think he'd take a firmer line with his brother. We have to question how it was that he's been able to sleep over in the homes of convicted sex criminals and not been pulled up on it by the palace, and still isn't now (according to news sources)

I think it’s time they all retired.

Outdated waste of money. The wedding costs😱Absolutely outrageous the minor royals get carriage rides around London, because Daddy insists that his daughters are princesses!

KittenLedWeaning · 18/11/2019 19:25

Sure Charles can takeover a lot of duties, but he can't really make important drastic changes.

Well, nor can the Queen, at least, not unilaterally. Her actual powers are minimal.

I think any change to the Royal Family will happen gradually, regardless of who is its head. We might (hopefully) end up with a much smaller Royal Family, but it will happen through natural life changes - e.g. Eugenie and Beatrice moving out of the public eye once married - there won't be a visible 'cull' but more of them will drop into the background, with any luck.

Moomin8 · 18/11/2019 19:26

No, it's time for the monarchy to go.

VanyaHargreeves · 18/11/2019 19:32

Agree with @KittyLedWeaning

At the moment the wider family gets included on Balcony Events and such because they are the children and grandchildren of the monarch

When Charles ascends, it will just be his children and grandchildren

Right now, B and E are The Sovereigns Granddaughters
Then they will be The Sovereigns nieces
Then the Sovereigns Cousin
Then the Sovereigns Cousin Once Removed AKA who gives a shit?

A lot will change when she has passed.

WaterOffADucksCrack · 18/11/2019 19:32

The Queen's "opinion" will be whatever has been written for her. She will never be allowed to speak her private thoughts or feelings.

I don't think it's fair of the pp saying "the mother/brother of a sex offender bla bla bla" to tar them with the same brush as Andrew. If a family member of mine had done or potentially done something so awful I wouldn't want that to happen to me. I'm sure nobody else would either.

LaurieMarlow · 18/11/2019 19:34

That’s not how it works OP.

Liz is in it til the end.

3rdNamechange · 18/11/2019 19:34

The monarchy needs to end now. To those who say they bring tourists in , how many people go to Versailles every year ? and it's been over 200 years since France had a monarchy.
The palaces could all be opened to tourists , They could all get jobs to support themselves , strange idea Smile

MangoFeverDream · 18/11/2019 19:35

don't think it's fair of the pp saying "the mother/brother of a sex offender bla bla bla" to tar them with the same brush as Andrew

Any decent person would have stripped him of his titles by now

Alsohuman · 18/11/2019 19:35

She will never be allowed to speak her private thoughts or feelings.

Who’s stopping her? She chooses not to do so because she’s old school.

Passthecherrycoke · 18/11/2019 19:37

She never will and I agree she does a fantastic job. Very much doubt Charles wants to take it on any earlier than he has to- and as others have said, what could he do about his brother anyway?

MarianaMoatedGrange · 18/11/2019 19:38

I think you're right VanyaHargreeves when Charles takes the crown a lot of the family will fade quietly into the background.

VanyaHargreeves · 18/11/2019 19:38

If a Republic was ever going to happen it would have happened at one of the more turbulent times in our history.

Who knows if we will face a turbulent era again?

AdelaideK · 18/11/2019 19:39

No I think the monarchy should be abolished when the Queen dies.

Emmapeeler1 · 18/11/2019 19:40

She’ll never abdicate (if The Crown is anything to go by).

slipperywhensparticus · 18/11/2019 19:42

To the idiots who think they should get jobs a, the queen is way past retirement b, they are rich In there own rights they own property the crown estate isnt theirs but s lot of property cash and jewellery is there personal property

Disfordarkchocolate · 18/11/2019 19:47

If it means Andrew gets retired then I support it. She can pass nearly all the role to Charles and spend more time with Phillip. I'm very much a royalist but Andrew knowingly associating with a convicted paedophile is disturbing.

Volvemos · 18/11/2019 19:47

Let the Queen see out the monarchy.

Mothership4two · 18/11/2019 19:48

The crown estate (farms, properties, investments etc) is run like a business, but 100% of profits is handed back to the government

Not true. But it is taxed after official expenditures have been taken out.

Venger · 18/11/2019 19:48

At the moment the wider family gets included on Balcony Events and such because they are the children and grandchildren of the monarch. When Charles ascends, it will just be his children and grandchildren

I agree with this. They have a large family so right now the core group is large.

Elizabeth and Philip.

Their four children plus spouses for the three that have them so there's seven people.

Eight grandchildren plus spouses for the five(?) that are married, so thirteen people.

Plus eight great-grandchildren.

That's a total of 30 people in the 'immediate' family.

Once Charles takes over there will be him and Camilla.

William and Kate plus Harry and Meghan.

George, Charlotte, Louis, and Archie.

It drops the 'immediate' family down to ten people.

AlternativePerspective · 18/11/2019 19:51

Regardless of opinions of PA, I’m fairly sure that to refer to him as “a sex offender” when he hasn’t actually been charged much less convicted of a crime yet carries the potential for libel action. And no that’s not me supporting him but people do need to tread carefully on that one.

WRT the royal family, To suggest that the queen should be “keeping them under control” is ridiculous. It was well documented that prince Andrew doesn’t listen to advice re what he can or cannot do.

And to categorise Harry and Meghan in the same category as Andrew is incredibly offensive.

Mothership4two · 18/11/2019 19:57

To the idiots who think they should get jobs a, the queen is way past retirement b, they are rich In there own rights they own property the crown estate isnt theirs but s lot of property cash and jewellery is there personal property

The Crown Estate is owned by the reigning monarch ie the Queen. The Queen and Prince Charles also own Duchy lands that have an income of millions.

Frankly I believe Duchy lands should belong to the Country and not the Monarchy.

I think the 'idiots' calling for the RF to get jobs aren't talking about the Queen, but the younger members.

And you have to ask yourself, how did the Queen and the RF get so rich?

VanyaHargreeves · 18/11/2019 19:58

And instead of Parliament and Constitutional Monarchy what system would those advocating change prefer?

President Boris?

No thanks

LaurieMarlow · 18/11/2019 20:03

President Boris?

Such a lazy argument.

The Irish are great at electing presidents sl no reason why the UK can’t be too.

And even if a bad one gets through they’re only temporary.
