To think it's time the Queen passed the throne to Charles?

Given recent events concerning Prince Andrew, and the ensuing scandal, is it time for Charles to take over as King now? The Queen has been dedicated all her life to her civil duties, and continues to perform them well, but as she and the DOE are getting older, it appears her/their ability to control situations with some of the other members of the royal family is waning.

It could be argued that both Harry and Meghan and now Prince Andrew seem to be ignoring advice, unwisely sharing their grievances with the media and striking out on their own with the inevitable backlash (I am referring to interviews, not libel actions). Anecdotally, more and more people are saying it's time to get rid of the royal institution.

If Charles were to become King, it is probable that he would streamline the RF to just William and his heirs and make some needed adjustments, such a move might renew interest in the RF, increase their popularity and ensure their continuance as Charles is more in touch with the mood of the nation.

Also just read this provocative Daily Mail article,

Headline: 'The Queen 'backs' Prince Andrew and 'believes him 100 per cent'

www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-7698021/Queen-goes-horse-ride-Windsor-Castle-grounds-days-Prince-Andrews-car-crash-interview.html

Do think something has to change.

What’s the point in them then Laurie? Why have a president at all?

Alsohuman · 18/11/2019 21:18

Just leave it @LaurieMarlow. I’m not in the mood for a pointless fight.

Checks and balances (in theory), hand shaking, wheeled out for ceremonial occasions.

I’m much more comfortable with this person being a) elected b) fixed term c) having achieved something from their own efforts than getting the gig because they popped out of the right vagina.

LaurieMarlow · 18/11/2019 21:24

You mean you’re not prepared to substantiate your own views?

Okaaaay then.

Alsohuman · 18/11/2019 21:26

No I mean I’m tired and don’t care enough to argue with a random on the Internet.

OneForMeToo · 18/11/2019 21:26

If it skipped to wills sure not bloody Charles though.

MeTheCoolOne · 18/11/2019 21:26

The monarchy needs to end. There is no
Place for it in a modern society. If any of them had a modicum of common sense and decency they would step down.

It doesn't matter who there were although, unfortunately, it's doesn't help that many of them are self serving and delusional in how important and worthy they are. Most of them are not that bright and are hypocrites.

The Queen is the best of them I suppose.

CruCru · 18/11/2019 21:26

Charles is in a weird position. He is nearly the same age as my (retired) Dad but is still waiting for the job. By the time the Queen does, he may be getting quite frail.

I know what you mean Wink

Alternativeperspective · 18/11/2019 21:28

Do people think then that they could just announce tomorrow that there’s no more monarchy and they’ll all go and disappear into obscurity?

The state would still need to pay for e.g. their protection, because not being royal any more wouldn’t mean that they were any less fair game.

And what jobs do people think they would/should get? In fact I can imagine people stating that the ex royals getting jobs are just taking them away from people who actually need them.

And no to a president. If it works well in Ireland, it certainly doesn’t in most of the rest of the world. France? America? The majority of Africa???

MrsTumbletap · 18/11/2019 21:28

Charles os not as loved as the queen.

I hope the queen has the crown for another 5-10 years or however long she is able to and then bypasses Charles and gives is it straight to William.

heath48 · 18/11/2019 21:29

Time to end the monarchy, bunch of self-centred pompous prat’s.None of them have any intelligence.Ridiculous in this age to keep them on.

LaurieMarlow · 18/11/2019 21:29

I’d very much like to see it happen. The question of how is more tricky.

MindyStClaire · 18/11/2019 21:30

Cannot stand Charles and his wife. I think they both have a moral compass set at zero, and I would much refer William and Kate in charge and bypass Charlie completely. He’s a horrible little man.

Perfect argument against a hereditary monarchy.

MindyStClaire · 18/11/2019 21:34

But that's because all of those presidents aren't the same. The Irish system is the closest to the UK (for, ahem, obvious reasons), and the president has a similar ceremonial role to the Queen, they're just much cheaper, democratically elected, and it doesn't matter if their children are awful because they won't automatically assume power.

The US or French systems where the president has real power are very different and would mean an overhaul of the whole political system, not just the monarchy.

Ffs the ignorance on here. Most European states have presidents.

Littlemeadow123 · 18/11/2019 21:34

To all the people saying we should ditch the monarchy completely....do you know how much money having a monarchy brings into the economy?

Outsomnia · 18/11/2019 21:35

The monarchy will go on and on. Charles will be King if he survives long enough. It is what it is now, and although I am not a monarchist myself, I respect it for now.

Any more scandals and I'm out, but I won't have any say either will I?

It is all beyond our control.

I do wish they would trim it down though, like other royal families around Europe do. They seem to have it sorted.

CruCru · 18/11/2019 21:35

Thing is, if we have a hereditary monarchy, the Crown has to pass to Charles. Otherwise there’s no reason it should go to William - it isn’t meant to be a popularity contest, that’s what a presidency is for.

Venger · 18/11/2019 21:36

I hope the queen has the crown for another 5-10 years or however long she is able to and then bypasses Charles and gives is it straight to William

She can't skip Charles without an Act of Parliament and I think the Commonwealth countries have to pass corresponding Acts too so unless Charles dies before she does we will almost certainly be getting a King Charles III/George VII at some point.

LaurieMarlow · 18/11/2019 21:38

To all the people saying we should ditch the monarchy completely....do you know how much money having a monarchy brings into the economy?

No one knows, it’s utterly unquantifiable.

Most of us can think of the income streams that could be opened up if we got rid of them though.

PianoTuner567 · 18/11/2019 21:38

I find it amusing that anyone believes the Daily Mail know what the Queen thinks or feels about anything.

LaurieMarlow · 18/11/2019 21:39

You don’t get to skip Charles. That’s the whole damn point.

VanyaHargreeves · 18/11/2019 21:40

As it goes on, the possibility of Charles predeceasing the Queen increases, but it won't happen because the Queen cuts him out of the succession NEVER gonna happen.

AdelaideK · 18/11/2019 21:40

People are saying the crown should bypass Charles and go straight to William Confused that's missing the whole point of the monarchy.
