To have not cleaned my oven once in 6 months.

And don’t I bloody regret it. Currently trying to make the inner glass clear again whist I wait for the cleaning stuff to work on the inside.

Haven’t cleaned the oven once since we moved in May. How often do you normally clean your oven?

Always seems like such a big job.

Love this thread! Read the first comment and though oh shit. But then read the rest and thought thank god! Maybe twice a year here if I can be bothered. Surely the heat will kill any germs anyway but I use baking trays so nothing would touch the oven anyway.

BarbaraofSeville · 16/11/2019 16:49

I have pyrolytic ovens but you still need to take out the metal racks and clean those separately which is pretty tedious

I put them, along with the glass door, in the dishwasher.

Starlet79 · 16/11/2019 17:08

I am pretty house proud but oven cleaning is something I avoid most of the time. I try and clean twice a year. A while ago I attempted cleaning it and I got a bad chemical burn from oven Pride (silly me). OH does it now 🤣 usually before Christmas and in the summer but I’m trying to clean it in between to keep on top of it!

I’m desperate for a new one. The one I have is built in and so old. (It was here when we moved in). If I get a new one I’m sure I’ll be cleaning it every day to keep it nice 🤣

rookiemere · 16/11/2019 17:23

Not often enough but Lakeland sells industrial strength oven cleaner and soaking bags for the trays so when it gets too hideous ( we're talking once a year here) then I will clean it.

ColinKnocksTwoPence · 16/11/2019 17:28

I probably clean mine properly once a year, the glass door inclement a month.
I have "self cleaning" removable sides and a foil liner on the floor but the back and top of the oven get quite dirty, especially after DH cooks a roast in it.
I might try Oven Pride as I find the oven roof particularly difficult to get clean.

ColinKnocksTwoPence · 16/11/2019 17:29

Inclement?
No idea where that came from Confused
"Once a month"

hiredandsqueak · 16/11/2019 17:30

I have mine cleaned professionally every six months tend not to touch it in between times because I hate the job. Oven man said, when I asked how bad it was, that in terms of the ovens he cleans it would only merit a four on the dirty scale so fully intend to carry on as I am and not do it myself.

ForTheFew · 16/11/2019 17:32

Oven Pride it once a year.

Never understand why people pay £50!

Baguetteaboutit · 16/11/2019 17:33

Oh please, ovens are like doors, windows and skirting boards, they clean themselves, right?

RedSheep73 · 16/11/2019 17:34

Last time I cleaned mine was just before I had it mended. It never seems like a priority - it's not as if the food touches the sides, does it?

NorthernSpirit · 16/11/2019 17:46

Food residue (in your oven) carries germs and these germs can be passed on every time you use your oven.

If you don’t clean your oven regularly makes it easy for germs and bugs to breed in your oven and infect your meals and ultimately you and your family.

So yes..... you should be cleaning it!

Baguetteaboutit · 16/11/2019 17:49

Maybe if you never set your over over 60c. Meanwhile, I'd say that the cleaning chemicals used to clean ovens would do you more harm.

greathat · 16/11/2019 17:52

I've got a pyrolyitic one, it (mostly) cleans itself

Aragog · 16/11/2019 17:55

Gets done professionally once a year.
I give it a quick cursory wipe over inside rest of time, though will do it better if something gets spilled.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 16/11/2019 17:57

I moved into my house five years ago...

Hovverry · 16/11/2019 17:57

Mine said it was “self-cleaning” so I took it at its word and have never cleaned it in four years. I do wipe over the glass doors, shelves and bottom now and again.
All this obsession with germs and bacteria is nonsense. We are designed to live with them.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 16/11/2019 18:00

"it's not as if the food touches the sides, does it?"

I think you're getting confused between your oven and my tummy Wink

Postmanbear · 16/11/2019 18:00

Every two years when it starts to smell

SpoonBlender · 16/11/2019 18:01

Well, we've had the oven three years, so... never. I might have cleaned the previous oven (14 years) once or twice.

Never seen the point unless it's smoking, in which case whatever it is gets removed from the floor/element and away you go. Anything left in there is just a carbon soot stain rather than something that'd grow mould or whatever, there's no hazard.

newbingepisodes · 16/11/2019 18:02

@MyEnormousTurnip me too. A bloke in once or twice a year!

Ylvamoon · 16/11/2019 18:02

I just clean mine every week with the rest of the house. Not that hard and definitely not a specialist cleaning job.

Ribbityrib · 16/11/2019 18:02

"If you don’t clean your oven regularly makes it easy for germs and bugs to breed in your oven and infect your meals and ultimately you and your family."

Nonsense! Ovens get hot. Heat kills germs. Germs in any case do not jump. Unless you are laying your chicken directly on the base of your oven it will not pick up germs (which are not there anyway).

I use my 'unclean' oven at least four times a week. The last time I got food poisoning was in a restaurant, 18 years ago. Kids and husband all apparently hale and hearty too.

madcatladyforever · 16/11/2019 18:03

I never clean my oven.
The heat kills all germs and I get a specialist company in to clean it every 6-9 months.
I'm not a messy cooker though, i will clean the baking tray and the glass if it's dirty.
I do however pull the washing machine and fridge freezer out regularly to clean behind them as dirt really gathers there after a while.

user1480880826 · 16/11/2019 18:03

I don’t think I’ve ever cleaned my oven. Had it since 2014. It just doesn’t really get dirty.

Why are people saying they wouldn’t cook in a dirty oven? You know the inside of an oven is sterile right? Nothing could survive those temperatures.

Yoohoo16 · 16/11/2019 18:04

3.5 half years. I’m only now cleaning it because we’re moving and the oven is staying.
