I honestly don't understand why anyone who cares about anyone other than themselves would vote Tory.

A great many people are instinctively centre-left - if given a list of policies to choose from without any information as to which party is proposing them, the majority tend to approve of the ones which are broadly social-democratic, because most people are - or at least like to consider themselves - fair. They want a functioning infrastructure and support for those who are ill, disabled etc.

Agree with this. Unfortunately though, people are swayed by persona, by the media and by their own prejudices.

Alsohuman · 18/11/2019 16:24

If the country is on its knees now, it would be flat on its face under Labour.

This country did a lot better under Labour governments in 1997 to 2010 than it is now. Alarmist bollocks.

Sakura7 · 18/11/2019 16:27

Not to mention it was a radical Labour government in the mid to late 1940s that made massive improvements to the lives of ordinary people, most notably by setting up the NHS.

Centrist Labour Governments, led by reasonable people like Tony Blair whom the current Labour cult calls a Tory! Grin

This country did a lot better under Labour governments in 1997 to 2010 than it is now.

That was a VERY different more centralist Labour party, nothing at all like the hard left party it has become.

Alsohuman · 18/11/2019 16:36

Bet you were still saying the same thing then @user1471448556.

Deathgrip · 18/11/2019 16:38

Would you want to earn yourself an extra £10,000 then give Mr Corbyn £6,000 for his 'projects' - for example?

I would personally lose out financially under a Labour government - and believe me when I say I’d be very happy about it indeed.

You have no idea of what I’ve had to battle through with my children’s disabilities. I don’t know if my sanity would survive another tory term. I know disabled people who haven’t mentally haven’t survived this one, and a couple who physically haven’t survived it.

If I had no business, we would be reliant on UC and foodbanks and sanctions when inevitably my children need care and I couldn’t get to the job centre.

Unemployment figures? Don’t make me laugh.

www.channel4.com/news/factcheck/the-number-of-people-on-zero-hours-contracts-has-quadrupled-since-records-began

There were 165,000 people on ZHC in 2010. By 2016 it was 900,000. All of those people are classed as employed.

Many people who’ve lost work have had to become “self employed” but don’t make close to NMW. That’s 2 million people right there
www.tuc.org.uk/news/two-million-self-employed-adults-earn-less-minimum-wage

How are those unemployment figures looking now?

The Child Poverty Act 2010 committed to ending child poverty. So, like they are wont to do, the tories moved the goalposts:
www.theguardian.com/society/2015/jul/01/tories-redefined-child-poverty-no-longer-finances

Yet still, there are 800,000 more children from working households living in poverty than there were in 2010
apple.news/Atzbym2w2SHWWmuW9_7WW7w

In 2016 alone, 100,000 children became poor
www.theguardian.com/society/2017/mar/16/child-poverty-in-uk-at-highest-level-since-2010-official-figures-show

So please don’t talk to me about how the country will be on its knees - what you mean is that you’re not on your knees. Millions are. Things must change.

CendrillonSings · 18/11/2019 16:42

Millions are. Things must change.

The only thing that will change if Labour gets in is that tens of millions of us will be on our knees as Corbyn, Abbott, and McDonnell take total control of the economy. I wouldn’t trust them to run a bath, let alone one of the most successful countries in the world!

user1497207191 · 18/11/2019 16:42

Things must change.

Well they won't with Corbyn, Abbott and McDonnell will they? Direct your anger to the unions who have hijacked the Labour party. If and when they become more central with more electable/competent leaders/cabinet, then they'll have a chance of forming a government. They've massively shot themselves in the foot by keeping Corbyn as leader.

CendrillonSings · 18/11/2019 16:47

Snap! That terrible trio of Marxists want to occupy the Great Offices of State. Let’s not wake up to that particular dystopia, shall we?

ReanimatedSGB · 18/11/2019 16:52

It would be infinitely better to have Marxists in power than the current bunch of crooks, idiots and fascists. I fail to see why anyone struggles to understand this.

Alsohuman · 18/11/2019 16:53

@Deathgrip, now that the thread’s been taken over by Tory Central Office, your facts are wasted. No considered arguments, no debate, just scattergun alarmist sound bites. If they could tell us how Tory policies would benefit the millions of people who live their lives in austerity inflicted poverty, there might be some point to them.

Deathgrip · 18/11/2019 16:55

Are you actually typing these words?

You want me to blame Labour or anyone other than the tories for the deliberate choice the conservatives have made to destroy the lives of millions of people?

The only thing that will change if Labour gets in is that tens of millions of us will be on our knees as Corbyn, Abbott, and McDonnell take total control of the economy. I wouldn’t trust them to run a bath, let alone one of the most successful countries in the world!

It’s literally pointless having a conversation with you, when you make wild claims with absolutely no basis.

Deathgrip · 18/11/2019 16:59

They know that’s impossible and won’t even try.

Don’t worry, I’m not responding for them - I’m responding for the people are lurking, a few of whom have already messaged me for an actual discussion. You’ll never get anywhere with these people, but there are plenty of others taking it in. Glad I’m not sticking it out alone :)

CendrillonSings · 18/11/2019 17:08

I could say the same about someone who thinks that the far left is a sensible basis for government.

now that the thread’s been taken over by Tory Central Office, your facts are wasted

There are plenty of Labour fans loading the thread with nonsense about the coming Corbynite utopia, so you shouldn’t be surprised if those voting for a more popular party also have a say! Or would you prefer an echo chamber devoted to worshipping at the feet of the Jezziah, whose word must not be questioned?

HelenaDove · 18/11/2019 17:11

From last weeks Big Issue.

"A study commissioned by Unilever showed that two thirds (65.6% ) of the UK said they thought fewer than 500"000 children were affected by the food poverty crisis , while in reality four million children and their families are trapped in poverty"

Deathgrip · 18/11/2019 17:16

I could say the same about someone who thinks that the far left is a sensible basis for government.

Except you couldn’t, because I have spent a great deal of time sourcing and posting evidence to back up what I’m saying, whereas all you’ve posted is daily mail soundbytes and some uninformed opinions. Oh, and the ever-reliable source that is opinion polls.

Sakura7 · 18/11/2019 17:32

That terrible trio of Marxists want to occupy the Great Offices of State. Let’s not wake up to that particular dystopia, shall we?

Hahaha are you serious? It's like Daily Mail bingo.

The hyperbole is something else. I can't believe people can actually post this stuff with a straight face.

Alsohuman · 18/11/2019 17:39

I can't believe people can actually post this stuff with a straight face

Mostly they don’t. One of them particularly is fond of adding one of those stupid little faces to their posts.

It astonishes me that they can’t see how counterproductive it is. Engage in sensible debate, offer thought out arguments, give us a reason why a Tory government would be good for us would possibly change some minds or give pause for thought. Yoo, hiss, yah insults don’t really cut it. Or endless meaningless polls.

ReanimatedSGB · 18/11/2019 17:44

I think what motivates some working class/poor people to support the Tories is a rather neurotic fixation on 'respectability'. Parents being heterosexual and married. Everyone obeying the rules; working for employers and deferring to authority. Hard work being rewarded, and everyone knowing their place. Be good, do as you're told and everything will be all right. They want to cling to this idea, and blame their troubles on the feral poor and the 'liberal elite' who don't shine their shoes or stand up for the National Anthem because they find it comforting to believe 1950s fairytales, even though this belief system is what allows crooks like Johnson and his pals to plunder the country.

Alsohuman · 18/11/2019 17:54

@ReanimatedSGB, I’d agree with you if the Tory party was the one of 30 years ago but look at them ... My former MP was John Major, he was a brilliant constituency MP, I look back on him and realise just how much integrity he had. The current party can't compare, especially since the most decent were slung out.

thecatsabsentcojones · 18/11/2019 17:55

The problem is that so long as it doesn't happen to some people, they don't care. The Job Centre death today was horrific, how can someone so ill be judged as fit to work? But so long as people walk on by using their votes then we are stuck with this dog eat dog society.

noodlenosefraggle · 18/11/2019 17:56

How patronising. I suspect part of the reason members of the working class vote Tory is because middle class socialists treat them like idiots who need Washington themselves and their own stupidity!

noodlenosefraggle · 18/11/2019 17:57

saving from

Deathgrip · 18/11/2019 18:07

So we can’t the potential reasons why someone from a particular group would vote for a party that’s deliberately targeting and harming that group?

You seem to think they may do this because of the opinions of random people on the internet - that’s pretty insulting to their intelligence and reasoning isn’t it?
