To not put Christmas tree up yet?

My DP really wants to put the tree up early this year. His reasoning is that we have just moved into our own place and it would be nice to have as long as possible for our DS who is one. He wants to do it tomorrow if he gets enough people to agree with him.

The reason I dont want to is we havent finished unpacking and it's all down to me. He isnt helping as he brought all the stuff to the new flat, without my help. We think this is a fair trade.

I cant however finish unpacking yet as there is storage issues. Tools still left behind by people who helped get the flat ready to live in and some drawers not yet been brought over.

So AIBU in not wanting to put it up until the flat is completely finished?

I agree with you it is crazy to put the tree up untill the unpacking is finished. The one year old will also not care.

As to the rights and wrongs of when to put the tree up - personally our tree goes up in the middle of December but doesn't come down until the end of Christmas - Epiphany on 6th Jan. I find it strange when people put a tree up super early (before Advent) but then take it down before Christmas has finished like on Boxing Day. But each to their own! Smile

I think everyone is being a misery guts!!! My tree would be up now if my husband wasn’t such a bah humbug!!! We negotiated end of November 😄

5Tweakles · 12/11/2019 18:41

jmpt29 · 12/11/2019 18:42

Mine is up. I say go for it 😁🎄

Coliebean28 · 12/11/2019 18:43

That's crazy, you will be sick looking at the tree. I put mine up on the 4th of December (my daughters birthday) even then I'm ready to take it down the day after boxing day!!

MummyMayo1988 · 12/11/2019 18:45

Our eldest DS's birthday is on 27th November; so we dont put our tree up till the weekend after that.
Totally with you OP - unpacking ALL your belongings around Christmas decoration will be hard work! X

littlemisskt · 12/11/2019 18:47

I wouldn’t put it up yet, you’ll get bored of it before Christmas is even here. Especially with a toddler tugging on it constantly!

Middersweekly · 12/11/2019 18:49

I agree with the other 99.9% of people. It’s November! Any time in December is perfectly reasonable. No trees have ever been put up in my house before December 1st and I’ve usually had enough of it by January 1st so it comes down. I thought I was a bit baa humbug but there are some people less festive than me here! Grin

legoiseverywhere · 12/11/2019 18:50

Is this why Christmas stuff in the shops is coming out earlier & earlier?

MountIronSolo01 · 12/11/2019 19:03

If you put it up too soon it will have lost it’s charm well before Christmas. You’ll be so used to it you may as well just keep it up for next Christmas 😂

hazell42 · 12/11/2019 19:05

I put mine up at 4 PM on Christmas eve, but acknowledge that I like to do it late.
3 PM is acceptable
Before lunch is a no no
Far too early

tinyteece01 · 12/11/2019 19:09

Of course not.

browneyes77 · 12/11/2019 19:29

It’s November

That is reason enough not to put a tree up yet.

di2004 · 12/11/2019 19:35

I’m with Champagnecommunist on this one.. 15th Dec is enough thanks!

MyRaGaiaStarFishPieA · 12/11/2019 19:43

I put my tree up on Sunday gone. I take it down on the 27th as we go away on the 28th every year for two weeks. Plus as you say OP, it's a LOT of hassle for just 12 days... I like getting my money's worth. Plus my tree is a work of art, I collect vintage and glass baubles and my tree rotates. The twinkly lights and beautiful colours just make me happy st a really gloomy time of year. I wasn't surprised to read a study that says putting your tree up early is linked to better mental health during winter as it reminds you of happy times and makes you feel cosy.

SuzieCath · 12/11/2019 19:52

It's the 12 days of christmas not 112! 12 days before and 12 days after (or the nearest feasible weekend) so this year up on 14th down on jan 4th.

Sn0tnose · 12/11/2019 20:09

I did all the packing and I am doing the unpacking as he has done the manual labour as I am 28 weeks pregnant and have to look after DS.

I’m not sure that when to put your Christmas tree up is your biggest problem here.

FelicisNox · 12/11/2019 20:28

I love Christmas but it's too early and your new place is in no fit state.

This is how I would tackle it: tell him you've thought about it, it's such a sweet idea and that you're totally on board and as soon as all the tools are packed away and your unpacking is complete and you will get right on it.

After all, no point putting the decs up until the house looks like a house or it will be just a busy mess right? Then smile sweetly and say: just bear with me ok?

That way you're not saying no but he will either help you sort it out in double time or the tree won't come out until it's done nearer December.

Win win. Grin

Keepitjuicyjuicy · 12/11/2019 21:32

My DP is christmas mad and has our tree up already, I want to rip my own eyeballs out already to avoid looking at the festive, shiny attack on my senses every single day. Each year I try and delay it especially as we have a DC born in early december, but he just can't resist. Its torture :(

Jack80 · 12/11/2019 21:50

We have had ours up the end of Nov as my husband loves Christmas but we have decided to wait till Dec

drigon · 12/11/2019 22:06

Yes, Christmas is lovely, but never celebrated it in November! I would ideally like our decs and tree up by around the 22nd December and down on the 6th January, but my son nags for early December. We usually put them up by around the second week of Dec.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 12/11/2019 22:07

Tree goes up on 24th December (evening) and comes down on 6th Jan.
November is bonkers.

Catsinthecupboard · 12/11/2019 22:18

I think 3rd week in November is good.

salsmum · 12/11/2019 22:18

I was looking to get my Dd a new tree and read Argo tree reviews saying how wonderful the white tree looked ( all reviews from this year 😵) one review dated this year said looks lovely up and packs away really well too Confused Christmas was short lived in that house then. Grin

Alsohuman · 12/11/2019 22:42

Same here @Grumpyoldpersonwithcats. I read somewhere that Christmas is a season. Well, not here it isn’t. It’s a day followed by a nice chilled few days of hunkering down here.
