To ask what things you'd do, if you weren't worried about being judged...

I worry way too much about what other people (often strangers) think of me...

I am trying to work on this, but I think in reality it's probably a pretty fundamental part of my personality that I am unlikely to change.

There are probably quite a few things I would do/not do (mainly related to my children) if it wasn't for fear of being judged.

My top 3 are:

  • Let my eldest (nearly 4) watch telly on a tablet in restaurants once she's finished her food, so I can enjoy mine.
  • Potty trained later.
  • Drive my daughter the 15 minute walk home from pre-school (to avoid the 25 million mini tantrums that mean it takes us at least 30 minutes)

What are yours?

Oh dear TiceCream I was hoping we could do this thread without any judgement...

Ah, was that aimed at me Tice? Sadly I am and broadly what keeps me in check is knowing that people will think I’m a dick rather than concern for their feelings. Society!

MintyMabel · 09/11/2019 22:10

I can't actually remember the last time I stopped myself doing something because of "what will people think"

I guess I might forgo a bra at work if I could get away with it.

Yellowredpurple · 09/11/2019 22:13

Wear pyjamas outside all of the time. I’d be so cosy.

Tunnocks34 · 09/11/2019 22:16

Stop shaving. I fucking hate it but I’ve been so programmed to believe body hair is repugnant that I spent hundreds ripping out my pubes, and arm hair (I am naturally dark haired) and shaving my legs from thigh to toe. My husband frequently says he doesn’t care but I feel dirty if I’m not hairless.

Also, really wanted to call my eldest son Bear but didn’t because it’s ‘chavvy and celebrity inspired’

Sometimes when I’ve made an effort I’d love to post a selfie on Instagram but I’m scared people will think I’m conceited so I don’t and never have!

holidays987 · 09/11/2019 22:17

I'd like to wear short skirts and dresses, I like my legs and feel nice when they're out. But I always wear very thick black tights or leggings underneath for fear I'd be labelled / judged.

I'm in my late 20s and wish I'd have cared less what people think of my outfit choices. I've dressed more conservatively than I'd have liked to throughout my 20s due to other people's opinions.

SunshineAngel · 09/11/2019 22:21

@FudgeBrownie2019 The day I stopped worrying about what I wore outside of the house, I feel like my life began haha. To be fair, I will wear my trackies if I'm going for a walk, or to the shops, but I will obviously make an effort if I'm visiting people, going on a trip out, or going for a meal. But for casual things, trackies are absolutely brilliant!

stilltiredinthemorning · 09/11/2019 22:24

That's the thing Minty it's not actually a conscious thought process for me, but occasionally I ask myself (or my husband asks) why I don't do something that would quite obviously make my life easier. Then I realise it's not because I think it would do any harm to others or be detrimental to my children, I just think other people would judge me for it.

Sleep around

quitecontrary123 · 09/11/2019 22:28

Ride an adult scooter on the school run

managedmis · 09/11/2019 22:29

I'd dress like a slut and act like one

Swear more

Be fat as fuck

But that'd detract somewhat what I think from my wannabe slut acting behaviour

HmmBlush

The true measure of ‘a man’s ‘ worth is what he would do if he knew he would never be found out.

So think about that - your own internal measure is what counts, not what others think.

FourQuarters · 09/11/2019 22:30

Not now, but I’d have spent a lot less time concealing my own cleverness when I was younger.

Lipperfromchipper · 09/11/2019 22:33

This thread has made me realize how much I really don’t give a shit what ppl think of me!! OP please do all 3 and stop overthinking/doing other ppls thinking, it’s not healthy 😢

Gingernaut · 09/11/2019 22:34

In the early mornings, stand in the train corridor (where no one else is) and practice my scales.

I'm falling behind with my singing practice and getting very fed up.

TiceCream · 09/11/2019 22:37

Oh dear TiceCream I was hoping we could do this thread without any judgement...
There’s a difference between “not wanting to be seen as trashy” and “not being a dick”. Wearing a tracksuit or giving your child a chavvy name doesn’t affect anyone, it just colours people’s opinions of you. Whereas making a noise in public and irritating everyone is being a dick.

OttomanUmpire · 09/11/2019 22:37

Tell everyone to go fuck themselves, joyfully and frequently

JollyRocker · 09/11/2019 22:38

So, no one else picks their nose in private then... Blush

AgeLikeWine · 09/11/2019 22:41

If there is one thing I have learned in my five decades on this planet, it is that people are going to think what people want to think. I can’t control that, and most people are idiots anyway, so why on earth would I waste my valuable time and energy worrying about it?

Countrylifeornot · 09/11/2019 22:43

I'd smoke 20 fags a day and to hell with the neighbours angrily shutting their windows when I light up.

motortroll · 09/11/2019 22:45

@NeverGotMyPuppy my daughters middle name is winter. The only reason I didn't use it as a first name is because it's so wildly different from my other girls and I wanted them all to be similar style. I've had loads of positive reactions. If I'd had a boy it's first name would have been Winter.

MarmotMorning · 09/11/2019 22:46

positivity123. Same here, I'd love to do that.

Warmfirechocolate · 09/11/2019 22:49

Smack my ex around the head with a huge smelly fish, tell him he’s a useless parent and I wish I’d had a kid with someone with more substance,
and tell his girlfriend 18 years younger than him that she’s welcome to him he’s not great in bed tbh.

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 09/11/2019 22:50

I would burp and fart in public. A lot.
I would let Dd be much noisier and probably join in.
I would shout ‘nob-head’, ‘gob-shite’ and ‘twat’ at people when they deserve it and consider it a public service.
I wouldn’t also growl at people who displease me.

Warmfirechocolate · 09/11/2019 22:52

I’d dress like a slut and act like one. Swear more

That’s easy! I’ve done this for a bit. Around my 40th. Pretty fun actually although you’ve also got to be very street savvy and grab a hot guy quick as otherwise you spent most of your time fending off sweary boring assholes!

So do it!
