To think friend is charging too much?

For of us sharing a car.
3 hour journey there
3 hour back
She says it will cost £120 petrol
So charging £30 each
Do you think that's correct ?

If everybody else always charges £10 a head she owes all 3 of you £20 for each trip you've driven her on.

Tell her you'll take her £20 out of your £30 & pay her £10 Smile

Bluerussian · 07/11/2019 21:32

I get what GrumpyHoonMain says, you would possibly (I don't know, haven't been on a train journey for a long time), pay near enough £30 for a journey on public transport, perhaps even have to get a taxi as well so it's not bad.

However I do agree that she is charging for more than the fuel and should be up front about it.

(Candle1000
Only if she’s driving a Ferrari!
....
May I just say - I do have a Ferrari and something else just as porsche. This isn't a stealth boast! They are nothing to boast about :-) )

Fuckenstein · 07/11/2019 21:37

I drive an ancient 1.6 and that would do it on about 60-70.

If you all charge wear and tear and time then fair enough but of everyone else just charges fuel cost then she should do likewise.

Has she overcharged before? I think maybe she has accidentally doubled up.

PavlovaFaith · 07/11/2019 21:38

My gas guzzling 4x4 would only be around £80. She's fleecing you. Get her to fill up before you leave and pay her your share of that. If she fills up again give her some more.

LEELULUMPKIN · 07/11/2019 21:42

How tight do you have to be to charge for wear and tear? It wouldn't even enter my head!

PavlovaFaith · 07/11/2019 21:43

@LEELULUMPKIN this is MN Grin

LEELULUMPKIN · 07/11/2019 21:44

Good Point! It's like some parallel universe to the one I live in. Thank goodness.

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 07/11/2019 21:44

I get 10 miles out of £1 of petrol in my C1!

Queenoftheashes · 07/11/2019 21:45

A Citroen c1! It’ll maybe be a tank, £40 or so or less. I have had two and petrol lasts forever in them.

HollowTalk · 07/11/2019 21:48

If she was happy to give you £10 then that makes a huge difference.

I think it would be better to have some sort of idea as a group as to what to charge per mile and think about whether the driver should pay.

LittleCandle · 07/11/2019 21:48

I drive a C1 and if the car is full of adults, I use a lot more petrol on journeys because it really isn't meant for that. Also, I use a lot more petrol on longer journeys anyway, especially if travelling on a motorway for example. I think she is being cheeky, though. That would mean she was filling her car about 4 times on the journey and that is ridiculous!

Duvetdweller · 07/11/2019 21:50

I drove 4 hours there and back to a recent weekend away and took 3 of my friends. I didn’t charge them a penny!! Wouldn’t dream of it. They offered and I said no - I was going anyway.

WhoKnewBeefStew · 07/11/2019 21:51

Yes she's definitely charging too much. It takes me 6 hrs to get to my parents which is about 300 miles away. That'll be about 1/2 a tank full of fuel for me, max of 40 quid, so a round trip would cost me a tankful = £80.

It's worth noting that I get 42 pence per mile for work, which takes into consideration fuel, wear and tear in the car, tax and insurance.
So a 600 mile trip would be £252

Whoatethechocorange · 07/11/2019 21:51

Don't work it out by time travelling if its going to an issue.... work out the mileage and cost of fuel and split it that way.

24hourshomeedderandcarer · 07/11/2019 21:53

shes not charging just petrol shes charging for her services as well

RB68 · 07/11/2019 21:54

She is doing .45p a mile - that is not petrol costs

3hrs is tops 150 miles = 67.50 x 2 =135

I get 500 per tank at £50 a tank now its a bigger car and hybrid so I would expect hers to be around a tank of petrol £60 quid ish

So yes she is profiteering which is not allowed legally

NoCleanClothes · 07/11/2019 21:55

When sharing long trips we do it so the driver doesn't pay for petrol or parking (to compensate for wear and tear on the car) and we all buy driver a meal out or lots of drinks (once we've arrived obviously) to thank them for driving.

NoCleanClothes · 07/11/2019 21:56

Actually overcharging people is obviously very cheeky though!

Tellmetruth4 · 07/11/2019 22:00

Friends shouldn’t be charging for wear and tear. Some people on here have really weird friendships.

Beveren · 07/11/2019 22:01

If she is using the 45p per mile rate, she isn't profiteering. That's the Inland Revenue rate which hasn't gone up for years, despite the fact that petrol, insurance and other costs have rocketed over that period.

Compare it with what you'd have to spend on train fares or a taxi, it may put it in proportion.

wigglybeezer · 07/11/2019 22:02

DHs C1 us incredibly cheap to run but prepare yourself to find it a bit uncomfortable in the back for a journey of that length, I always feel really shoogled and rattled after sitting in the back for any length of time. However his has done 139,000 miles so is a bit geriatric!

mankyfourthtoe · 07/11/2019 22:04

I think the aa site works it out for you. Put the details in, send it to her/all saying sorry I think you've got your maths wrong.

minniemoll · 07/11/2019 22:08

If I'm driving in a situation like that, I fill the car before I set off, then fill it again when we get back - the amount it costs to fill it the second time is the cost of petrol for the trip. If you're taking it in turns to drive I don't think wear and tear comes into it, as all your cars will be wearing out at the same rate.

Redyoyo · 07/11/2019 22:09

We just got rid of our c1, it cost £40 to fill the tank, its never 3 tanks of petrol!
One tank did my dh 2.5 weeks doing 20 odd miles 5 days a week. It was the cheapest car we have ever had to run. No road tax and about £150 a year insurance.

Your friend is taking the piss.

Just to add i wouldn't want to go 300 miles in a C1 especially with 4 adults. Ours was bought for me to go to work in but i didn't feel safe on the motorway so DH used it, they are very tinny.

ImTheCaddy · 07/11/2019 22:10

Ha! I made it southern Germany from the south coast of the Uk in around 10 hours on a lot less than that.

And her car is puny! She's about doubled it.
