For of us sharing a car.
3 hour journey there
3 hour back
She says it will cost £120 petrol
So charging £30 each
Do you think that's correct ?

The 4 of us go on trips often and each trip is a designated driver.
This trip is her turn
It's not like she always drives.

Lol no chance will a 3 hour journey on a 1 litre engine cost £120 🤣. A tenner each will be more than sufficient.

At 0.45p a mile and around 150 miles (guessing - you can replace with the actual miles) its £67.50 which is what you get for business miles and that's supposed to account for wear and tear and additional items too.

LEELULUMPKIN · 07/11/2019 20:44

DH has just worked it out and says it would cost around £50-£60.

He also thinks she is charging you double for wear and tear.

Ineedanamechange79 · 07/11/2019 20:45

It won't cost that much in fuel, however there is wear and tear on her car and she is doing all the driving. I would say £30 isn't ridiculous.

crosstalk · 07/11/2019 20:46

You can go online to work out the petrol. However it's also wear and tear and if she's driving both ways.

Riv12345 · 07/11/2019 20:46

Hi definitely charging to much, should cost about £60 altogether, she should be charging about £20 each at the most

littlehappyhippo · 07/11/2019 20:46

@sadaboutlife

For context, me and my cousin went to Norwich Uni to pick up her daughter in a 10 registered 1.6 Vauxhall Astra in June.

We went from Selby in North Yorkshire. Approx 170 miles there and 170 back, and 3 and a half hours... each way too.

Cost around £60 in petrol in total.

YES, your friend is over-charging... TWICE what she should be.

AlwaysCheddar · 07/11/2019 20:46

Do you charge when you drive?

mummmy2017 · 07/11/2019 20:47

How much do you charge when you drive?

NoClueWithStyle · 07/11/2019 20:47

Ford focus estate, I drive abroad with 4 adults and the large boot full of luggage. Costs £50-60 to fill depending on current price per litre and will do 10hrs on one tank when mostly motorway driving.

I'd say you're being done.

churchandstate · 07/11/2019 20:47

I don’t think you are really in a position to argue unless you have the option of alternative transport?

ThatMuppetShow · 07/11/2019 20:47

£30 for a 6 hour trip? It's a bargain for you. That's how you should look at it.

ffswhatnext · 07/11/2019 20:48

Do a group train ticket booking.

Elbeagle · 07/11/2019 20:48

How much would it cost on the train?

X0X0 · 07/11/2019 20:48

Do you and the others charge to drive?

Newmumatlast · 07/11/2019 20:48

Thats very unreasonable. Some saying it's ok seemingly based on you having the option to make own arrangements/it being likely more to make own arrangements I disagree with as she hasnt says that's her charge irrespective- she's said it will be that in petrol which is plainly wrong. If she is wanting to make a profit of that magnitude with respect she should be prepared to declare and pay tax on it- may sound extreme but so is her pricing Grin

museumum · 07/11/2019 20:48

Business mileage is 45p per mile for the whole cost of the car but goes down to 25p per mile after a certain number of miles so I’d think the 25p figure is probably appropriate if she wants more compensation than just the actual petrol.

sadaboutlife · 07/11/2019 20:49

Our last trip was to Edinburgh which is 4 hours and I just said £10 each

OP posts:
RandomMess · 07/11/2019 20:49

She's charging you an approved mileage rate at 35p per mile or similar to cover wear and tear etc.

Paraballa · 07/11/2019 20:49

I drive a Ford galaxy and it costs me about 20p a mile in fuel. I'm pretty certain my car is more fuel hungry than hers.
You need to ask her how she's working it out. But I expect she's adding in for wear and tear. The government recommended mileage rate is 45p which is what my work pays. Is she using that maybe?

ffswhatnext · 07/11/2019 20:50

So if it's her turn then surely you know roughly how much. I know diesel has gone up but has it really go up that much?

BlackAudi · 07/11/2019 20:50

Are you going to raise it with her @sadaboutlife?

MyNameIsMrsGrumpy · 07/11/2019 20:50

To be fair I’d drive myself 🤷‍♀️

Tellmetruth4 · 07/11/2019 20:50

I can kind of understand if she’s always ferrying you all about and you never offer to pay but seeing as you take turns to drive, she’s taking the piss. A full tank is about £80 at the most expensive petrol station.

SheChoseDown · 07/11/2019 20:50

You're under charging. She sounds sensible
