For of us sharing a car.
3 hour journey there
3 hour back
She says it will cost £120 petrol
So charging £30 each
Do you think that's correct ?

If I was driving a distance, I'd fill the tank before I left, then fill it again when I got back and split the cost that way.

jmh740 · 07/11/2019 20:52

I have a c1 costs about £45 to fill it up

saraclara · 07/11/2019 20:52

I don't know why people are talking about a the for journey. It's a six hour one.

£30 is a bargain. It gets you a return door to door journey that would cost you vastly more and be much more hassle on public transport. And if she's driving for six hours whole you and the others chat or snooze, any profit is well earned.

misspiggy19 · 07/11/2019 20:52

She is overcharging and I would be quite disappointed at her for doing this to her so called friends. Very sly

mummmy2017 · 07/11/2019 20:52

Ok, do your other friends charge a tenner as well.
tell her you just realised you have been massively undercharging on petrol, and that if it works out at £5 each an hour in petrol you will charge her rates next time and let your friends know as well.

DuesToTheDirt · 07/11/2019 20:52

Would cost about £60 in my Citroen Picasso, so half what she's saying.

Noooodles · 07/11/2019 20:52

In a C1 she would only use that much fuel if she drove at 90mph in 3rd gear all the way. It’s ridiculous.

Lj8893 · 07/11/2019 20:53

I regularly drive from Chester to Somerset which is about 200 miles. There and back costs me about £60, I drive a Hyundai i30. I would say she’s overcharging you!

Lauren83 · 07/11/2019 20:54

Would cost me about £75-£80 (KIA sportage)

minisoksmakehardwork · 07/11/2019 20:54

Has she factored in parking at your destination as well? She's definitely charging over the odds for west and tear.

Tbh I think it's a lot and being kind maybe she accidentally doubled it when calculating. For reference, I have a 1.5l car and very recently did a journey of nearly 300 miles on half a tank of fuel, so around £40 worth. I'd assume since my trip took nearly 7 hours adding in a couple of rest stops that your overall journey will be a similar distance.

I'd ask exactly what she was charging you for. Has she always asked for more than the rest of you for similar journeys? Is she just putting that figure out there as a way of getting out of doing what she might feel is a long driving trip? Everyone has their own level of comfort for how much they will drive. I'm happy to drive up and down the country. Dh and I swapped driving after I'd done nearly 3/4. But a relative isn't comfortable driving further than the next town, about 10 miles away.

Pussinboots25 · 07/11/2019 20:54

Hmmm no it’s too much. For me, a 300 mile journey isn’t even a full tank (about 50) so I could go 700 ish miles on £100

BlackAudi · 07/11/2019 20:55

Also, can a Citroen cope with 4 adults for 6 hours?! I would NOT feel safe in one of them things

millimollimandi · 07/11/2019 20:55

I can get just over 400 miles on a full tank of diesel - about £40 - your 'friend' is a CF!! (I drive a 1600cc Fiesta)

MinTheMinx · 07/11/2019 20:56

She's trying to get you all to cover her petrol costs for the entire month. Unless she's a REALLY bad driver or the car's so knackered it won't go higher than 3rd gear.

WonkyDonk87 · 07/11/2019 20:56

Fill tank at start of journey.
Re-fill at the end of journey. Divide the second bill between four.

mummmy2017 · 07/11/2019 20:58

Top Gear
RRP: From £9,605
Dimensions: 3,466 mm L x 1,615 mm W x 1,460 mm H
Fuel tank capacity: 35 L
Fuel economy: 69 mpg combined (58 city, 79 highway)
So if you bring it down to 50mpg
Eight gallons. At £6 is £50.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 07/11/2019 20:59

I've said it once but I'll say it again

The cost of driving a car isn't just petrol, there are other costs that have to be figured in.

Cloudyyy · 07/11/2019 20:59

This journey would cost me approx £80.

If my friend offered to do all the driving here and back and charge me £30, I’d snap her hand off because :
A. I wouldn’t have to drive!
B. I’d be saving £50

Justapatchofgrass · 07/11/2019 21:00

I drove 500 miles yesterday in a 2.4 litre 4 by 4. It took two thirds of a tank so £70 max

mummmy2017 · 07/11/2019 21:01

We know the cost of a car includes more than just fuel. However each person takes a turn using their car.

missnevermind · 07/11/2019 21:02

Is she splitting it 3 ways rather than 4?

Winterdaysarehere · 07/11/2019 21:03

It is an offence to overcharge for lifts...

ThatMuppetShow · 07/11/2019 21:04

It is an offence to overcharge for lifts...

Is it?

I am not sure how £30 for a 6 hour trip can be considered anywhere near overcharging though.

TwattingDog · 07/11/2019 21:05

She's charging 30p per mile.

And yes to the PP who says she's not putting in her own money towards fuel.

It does sound like she's charging for her time, as even my old Focus which drank petrol would do this distance on one tank of fuel.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 07/11/2019 21:05

It is an offence to overcharge for lifts...

In cloud-cuckoo land perhaps Grin
